🌹TESSA🌹

(Hours Earlier)

I got back to the office a little after one and I sat there with the folder still in my hands for a while before I set it down.

I kept expecting him. Every time the elevator dinged somewhere down the hall, I looked up, thinking it might be him walking off it, jaw set, asking me why the Caldwell numbers hadn't already landed on his desk. He never came. I typed up the report anyway, every line item, and I left it squared in the center of his desk where he'd see it first

  • HE PAID ME TO FORGET MY SON…NOW I WORK FOR HIM   41. TESSA HART

🌹TESSA🌹 The water was cold when I splashed it on my face, colder than I expected, and it woke me up faster than the alarm had. I stood there for a second with my hands dripping over the sink, staring at my own reflection, at the puffiness still sitting under my eyes from crying half the night before. He didn't remember any of it. I reached for the towel and pressed it against my face and held it there a second longer than I needed to. Whatever I thought I was going to feel when I finally let myself think about that clearly, standing here alone in the bathroom with the tap still running, this wasn't quite it. There was relief in it, real relief, the kind that actually loosened something in my chest instead of just talking about loosening it. No tension waiting for me at the office in three hours. No careful distance between us while he tried to work out what to do with a woman who'd kissed him back. No risk of him deciding overnight that I'd taken something from him while he wasn'

  • HE PAID ME TO FORGET MY SON…NOW I WORK FOR HIM   40. THE ONE THING I REMEMBERED

♠RAYMOND♠️My head split open before my eyes did.I groaned and pressed the heel of my hand against my temple, and the sound that came out of me was rougher than anything I would have let anyone hear if I'd had a choice in the matter. My mouth tasted like something had died in it. My whole body felt like it belonged to someone heavier than me, someone who had spent the night doing something I clearly had no memory of doing.A smell reached me before my eyes managed to open properly. Not my smell. Not my sheets, not cologne, not the particular scent my penthouse always carried, clean and expensive and faintly of nothing. This was warmer. Softer. Something like lavender, and it did not belong to any room I had ever woken up in before.I forced my eyes open.I was lying on a couch. Not my couch. Smaller, a cushion under my head that smelled like the same warm thing the air did. I sat up too fast and regretted it immediately, the headache spiking behind my left eye like something had been

  • HE PAID ME TO FORGET MY SON…NOW I WORK FOR HIM   39. PLEASE DON’T LEAVE ME AGAIN

🌹TESSA🌹I froze the second his mouth touched mine. For one full second I did not move at all. I stood there with his weight braced against me and his lips pressed to mine and every part of me locked in place, waiting for my own brain to tell me what to do with this.It did not tell me to pull away.Five seconds. That was as long as it took before something in me gave out, before I stopped holding myself rigid against him and let my mouth answer his instead. I tasted the whiskey first, sharp and warm, and underneath it something that was just him, something I had not tasted in eight years and somehow still remembered exactly, the way you remember the smell of a house you grew up in even after everything in it has been sold off.The club came back to me in pieces. The heat of a crowded room. His hand finding the small of my back the same way it was finding my waist right now, pulling me in like there was no version of that night where he let me stand any further away from him than thi

He never came. I typed up the report anyway, every line item, and I left it squared in the center of his desk where he'd see it first thing, whenever first thing actually turned out to be for him.I went through tomorrow's schedule while I waited for something that wasn't coming. It wasn't heavy. A site visit in the morning, one of the construction projects out past the river, and a note already attached that said I'd be accompanying him. I read that twice and didn't think much of it beyond making sure I had comfortable shoes for it.The rest of the day moved slowly. I answered emails that didn't need answering as fast as I an

  • HE PAID ME TO FORGET MY SON…NOW I WORK FOR HIM   37. WHRERE MY FEET TAKES ME

♠RAYMOND♠️ Eleanor's voice did not stay in that room. It came with me into the elevator, into the car, sat in my chest the whole ride like something I had swallowed wrong and could not bring back up. Spend time with her. Let it happen naturally. Do not force it. Oliver did not ask where. I did not tell him. I sat there turning the instruction over, trying to find some version of it I could actually carry out, and every version I built collapsed the second I looked at it directly. She worked for me. That was the whole problem. Every hour she spent near me already had a shape to it before either of us opened our mouths. Coffee delivered at a set time. A schedule read from a tablet at nine, the same order every morning, the same distance held the entire time. If I decided when the two of us would spend time together and wrote it down somewhere the way I wrote down everything else that mattered to me, it would not be what Eleanor meant. It would be another item on a list. Controlle

  • HE PAID ME TO FORGET MY SON…NOW I WORK FOR HIM   36. THE MEETING WITH THE BROTHERS

🌹TESSA🌹I stood there after he left. I did not move right away. The papers on his desk still had blood on them. Small drops, dried already at the edges, sticking into the page like ink that had gone the wrong color. I looked at them and I looked at the door and I did not know what to do with either.Handle both of them. Reschedule as needed. That was all he gave me. No notes. No numbers. Just his back walking out with blood soaking through his own fingers, and his jaw set like nothing had happened at all.Is he okay? That was the only thought that actually mattered, and the one I had no way of answering.I made myself walk back to my desk. I pulled up his calendar because sitting there thinking about him was not going to fix anything, and there was a twelve o'clock meeting with his name on it that I could not undo just by being afraid of it.Caldwell Group. Twelve. A café three blocks from the office. My stomach dropped the second I read it properly. I had known this was coming. I h
