Chapter 4

Author: Stars
That evening after work, I spotted Adrian waiting outside the office building. He’d clearly been there a while.

From a distance, he already looked a shadow of his former self. His complexion was pale, his energy depleted. Rachel had clearly begun her next move.

I let out a mocking chuckle. "What, you have time to come to the office now? Aren’t you afraid your princess will be mad you’re not with her?"

Adrian didn’t answer. His eyes were bloodshot, locked onto mine with a desperate intensity.

"Summer," he demanded, "did you know all along that Rachel only ever wanted a sweet, obedient toy boy?"

I tilted my head, regarding him coolly. "Everyone knew. Didn’t you? And besides, isn’t that what you signed up for?"

Adrian’s face flushed with anger. "So you also knew that signing that project meant becoming the chairman’s son-in-law, didn’t you?

"Why didn’t you tell me? What I wanted was power and status. But now I’m nothing but a kept man, jumping when Rachel calls, crawling when she snaps her fingers. What’s the difference between me and a lapdog?"

I noticed someone exiting the company’s main doors behind us. Instantly, I put on a new face.

"Adrian," I said sweetly, "how can you say that? What’s so bad about being the princess’s kept man? Earning her affection should be your honor."

Adrian cracked. He shouted, nearly unhinged, "No, it’s not! I don’t even have a job anymore. Without an income, I’m completely at her mercy—a puppet. What do people think of me now? That I used my body to climb up the ladder? That I’m just a man living off a woman?

"If I’d known it would end like this, I never would’ve signed that damn contract. I never would’ve agreed to marry into the Carter family."

Inside, I was laughing.

'Can’t handle this? Wait until they rip your heart out. Then, you’ll know what real despair feels like.'

Behind him, Rachel’s face darkened.

"What did you just say? You don’t want to marry me?" Her voice was sharp, wounded. "So all those sweet words you whispered to me were lies? You said you’d love me forever, that you’d never let me down. You told me marrying me was the greatest blessing of your life. Was all of it just a ploy to get promoted?"

She turned on her heel and stormed off.

Adrian stood frozen, terrified. Then, he snapped out of it, bolting after her and throwing his arms around her. "Baby, I’m sorry. I’m sorry! I messed up!"

Rachel’s eyes filled with crocodile tears as she shoved him away. "I’m telling my dad. I’ll make sure you can’t survive in this city. Every major company here belongs to the Carter Group. Let’s see who dares hire you then."

Adrian paled, trembling, stammering with panic. He glanced around desperately, and then his eyes landed on me like I was his lifeline.

"It was Summer! It was all her fault! She said she liked me! She begged me to marry her! She wouldn’t let go!" He pointed at me like a drowning man clinging to driftwood. "She looked so pitiful that I couldn’t bear to hurt her. I swear, I never betrayed you!"

A chill ran down my spine.

This bastard. In our last life, he locked me in a basement and tortured me to death, and now he was dragging me down with him in this one?

Rachel’s expression shifted, her gaze toward me clouded with suspicion. "Summer, is that true? And here I thought we were best friends. I never expected you to stab me in the back, too."

I raised my hands in protest, stepping away. "Adrian, be careful what you say. When have I ever said I liked you? Stop making things up. You’re just the son of our family’s housekeeper. My family was kind enough to let your mom work for us while taking care of you. That’s how we met. When did I ever say I liked you?"

Adrian grabbed my wrist tightly.

"Summer, I know you like me! We made a childhood promise to get married, remember? You said it yourself in your backyard, that you’d marry me when we grew up!"

This shameless jerk. He was actually trying to twist a childhood game into some kind of engagement.

I saw the look in Rachel’s eyes turning darker by the second. I suddenly realized that she was not someone to mess with. My company was part of the Carter Group. If she got even a little upset, she could destroy my family overnight.

I yanked my hand away and forced myself to stay calm.

"I’m getting married soon," I said flatly. "I hope you won’t bother me again."

Everyone around us froze in shock.

Rachel gasped, covering her mouth. "You’re getting married? Why didn’t I know?"

Adrian didn’t buy it for a second. "Where’s your proof? Who'd believe that? You probably just made something up to distract Rachel and save yourself."

I broke out in a cold sweat. My mind raced, trying to figure out how to cover the lie I’d just blurted.

All of a sudden, a man’s voice rang out from behind me, "My fiancee and I are in love. What more proof do you need?"

"No… no, that’s impossible… Lola’s definitely pregnant with my child. It can’t be my fault…" Adrian stumbled backward, shaking his head in denial."We can find out the truth with one visit to the hospital." Rachel shot a glance toward the corner, where Lola stood trembling like a leaf."You know I hate being lied to," Rachel said icily. "So tell me the truth. Whose baby are you really carrying?"Her voice cracked like a whip. The heiress’s commanding presence was so overwhelming that Lola collapsed to the ground in fear."I… I don’t know," she stammered. "I was already pregnant when I was working at the bar. I only turned to Adrian because I needed someone to take responsibility."The moment she said it, Adrian exploded."You bitch!" he shouted, lunging forward and wrapping his hands around her throat. "You said this was my baby! That’s the only reason I gave you money! Turns out it’s some other bastard’s kid? How much money have you stolen from me?!"Lola fought him off, gaspin

He really did shove all the blame onto someone else without a hint of shame.I kept my expression innocent. "Rachel, what does any of this have to do with me? I was with you that day in line. How could Adrian accuse me of something so outrageous?"Of course, Rachel didn’t buy a word of Adrian’s lies. She sneered coldly. "Summer has been my best friend since we were kids. Don’t you think I know exactly what kind of person she is? But you’re saying everything is her fault? Is she the one who put a baby in Lola’s belly? Was she the one who made you fool around with her?"You stood in front of my father swearing up and down that you’d never hurt me. And yet, barely married, you’re already out there finding mistresses. How do you think you’ve treated me?"Adrian’s legs nearly gave out. Still, he clung desperately to his excuses."I was drunk that night! When I woke up, Lola was next to me. I didn’t know what happened. Then, she said she was pregnant with my kid and started blackmailing

Even after getting married, Rachel couldn’t tame her brash and domineering nature. She partied every night, bouncing from one flashy event to another. Then, one night at a neon-lit nightclub, she caught sight of a man across the room, locked in a passionate kiss with a delicate-looking woman. The woman was visibly pregnant."Hey, Rachel," one of her girlfriends leaned in and whispered. "Isn’t that your husband? Didn’t you say you had him completely whipped? That he wouldn’t dare go against you? Well, what’s he doing out here with a side chick?"Rachel had been sipping her drink when she followed her friend’s finger toward the scene, and her expression turned stormy. She might not have loved Adrian, but he was still her possession. Seeing someone else lay claim to what was hers stung hard. And to be humiliated in front of her friends? That was unforgivable.Just as she started to stand, I grabbed her arm."Rachel, not here. This is a public place. If this explodes, you’ll be on th

The day of Rachel and Adrian’s engagement party arrived quickly.Rachel, the one and only cherished daughter of the Carters, had been spoiled rotten from the moment she was born. She always demanded the very best, and this time was no exception. For her engagement, she rented an entire luxury cruise ship to host a lavish celebration for her friends and relatives.I stood in the glittering hall, which dripped with gold and extravagance, and let out a soft laugh.'Adrian, this is the wealth and glory you schemed so hard to obtain. I just wonder, do you even have the life left to enjoy it?'He looked deathly pale. Blue veins bulged across the back of his hand, his whole frame visibly thinner than the last time I saw him. He looked like he’d been drained dry by a vampire.Word was he was still sick. However, no matter how bad he felt, he didn’t dare skip the heiress’s engagement party, so he forced himself to stay upright, weaving through the crowd with a fake smile glued to his face

I turned around, and to my surprise, it was Alex.Adrian’s brow furrowed deeply. "What did you just say? When did Summer become your fiancee?"Alex stepped forward, wrapped an arm around my shoulders, and pulled me close."Our engagement doesn’t need your approval, especially not from an outsider like you," he said calmly. "Summer just doesn’t like to make a big deal out of things. Her plan was to get everything arranged before telling anyone."I echoed his words, playing along. "We were actually planning to surprise you all. I didn’t expect someone to misunderstand and even lay their hands on me."Feigning vulnerability, I nestled into Alex’s chest and let out a few pitiful sobs. Anyone watching would’ve thought we were an affectionate couple madly in love.Adrian’s hand trembled as he pointed at me. "No. No way. You’re lying. You’re putting on a show!"Seeing he still refused to back off, I decided to go all in. If we were going to act, we had to make it convincing.I grabbed
