The Six-Fifteen Problem

POV: Imogen

The Sydney sunrise had no respect for blackout curtains.

By six-fifteen, pale gold light was already pushing through the gap in the twins' bedroom window and landing across Declan's face with the cheerful persistence of a force that had never once been told no. He scrunched his nose. Pulled his blanket higher. Kept snoring.

Imogen stood in the doorway with her tea going cold and her patience doing the same.

"Hayley. Declan." Pleasant. Measured. The voice of a woman who had not already been awake for forty minutes was running through every possible way today could go wrong. "Up. Now."

Nothing.

She walked in, pulled the blanket off Declan in one clean motion, and watched him sit bolt upright with his amber eyes wide and his blonde hair pointing in four directions.

"I'm awake," he announced.

"Wonderful news." She moved to Hayley's bed.

Her daughter was already sitting up, dark hair tangled, those grey eyes fixed on Imogen with a quiet focus that made the morning feel briefly held still. Hayley had her father's eyes. Exact shade, exact stillness. Imogen had made her peace with that around the twins' second birthday, mostly because she didn't have a choice.

"You didn't sleep again," Hayley said.

"I slept fine."

Hayley said nothing. Just watched her cross to the wardrobe.

Downstairs, the cottage kitchen held the kind of warmth Imogen had built into it deliberately. The twins' drawings were layered across the fridge in overlapping chaos. A trailing plant crowded the windowsill. The kettle had clicked on at six. The cottage was small, rented, and showed its age in the scuffed floorboards and the back garden Declan had systematically ruined over summer, but she had made it feel solid.

She was at the stove when it happened. Not a dramatic sound. More like the noise of cardboard meeting a force it was never designed to survive.

She turned.

Declan sat at the kitchen table with the flattened remains of his juice box in one hand and orange juice covering the table, his uniform, and, impressively, the wall behind him. He looked at the wall. He looked at her. He wore the expression of a boy ambushed by his own hands.

"I was only picking it up," he said.

"I know." She crossed to him, took the box, binned it, and started wiping the table. No lecture. No point. She had been explaining away his strength since he was eighteen months old. The bent spoon at two. The garden gate at three. The juice boxes were practically a weekly event now, and each one reminded her that time was running out.

Through the kitchen window, a dark SUV was moving slowly along the residential street outside. Unhurried. The kind of pace that belonged to a figure looking rather than going somewhere. She tracked it until it turned the corner and disappeared.

Probably nothing.

She kept her face neutral and went back to wiping the table.

"You're doing the worried thing," Hayley said from across the table.

"I'm doing the cleaning thing."

"Both."

Imogen looked at her daughter and said nothing, because there was nothing useful to say to that. Hayley felt rooms the way other people felt temperature. At four, she had told Imogen the woman at the supermarket checkout was sad about something she hadn't told anyone. She had been right. She was always right, which was wonderful and exhausting in equal measure.

"Finish your porridge," Imogen said.

A knock at the front door arrived at exactly the right moment.

Cooper Ashford let himself in the way he always did, with the ease of a man who had been given a key and understood what that meant. He was tall and lean, sandy-haired, with hazel eyes that found Imogen across the kitchen immediately. Silvercrest's Beta. Thirty years old. Dependable enough that she had stopped thinking of reliability as one of his qualities. It was simply who he was.

He had driven Imogen and the twins to school every morning for two years without once making it feel like she owed him.

He took in the juice-wall situation without a word and poured himself coffee from the pot she always made enough of, settling against the counter beside her. His arm almost brushed hers when he reached for the sugar. Almost.

She shifted slightly left. He noticed. He said nothing.

"Coop!" Declan's face lit up like someone had flipped a switch. "Did you bring the ball?"

"Boot of the car," Cooper said.

"Yes." Declan pumped his fist, nearly taking out his porridge bowl in the process.

Cooper caught it without looking, set it back, and kept drinking his coffee. Imogen watched the exchange and felt the familiar complicated weight of it settle somewhere in her chest. The twins adored him. Of course they did. He showed up. He remembered the ball. He sat through homework without checking his phone and taught Declan to kick without flinching every time the boy's foot sent the ball through the fence rather than over it.

He was good to them. And one day, when Lachlan Pierce finally found them, that was going to make everything considerably harder.

She pushed the thought away before it could take hold.

"Tyson pushed Chloe off the swing yesterday," Declan announced, mouth still half full.

"Don't talk with food in your mouth," Imogen said.

He swallowed. "He needs to learn respect."

The words came out flat and certain and oddly weighted for a five-year-old. Cooper's eyes moved to hers across the kitchen. Quick. Quiet. He had heard it too. That low, settled authority in her son's voice, the certainty that had no business being there yet and kept showing up anyway.

Her wolf shifted uneasily against her ribs.

  • His Rejected Mate, Her Secret Twins    The Weight of Command

POV: LachlanThe view from the forty-third floor of Nightshade's Melbourne headquarters was designed to remind visitors where they stood in relation to everything else. The city stretched below in every direction, glass and steel catching the late afternoon light. Lachlan Pierce stood at the window with his back to the room, hands clasped behind him, and gave it almost none of his attention. He was listening to Rhys talk, which required focus because Rhys delivered information the way some people delivered furniture: methodically, piece by piece, in an order that made perfect sense to him and nobody else."Fourteen incidents across three states in six weeks," Rhys said.He was thirty-four, built like a man designed for physical confrontation who had leaned into it professionally, with close-cropped dark hair and the stillness of a person who had learned early that the most dangerous people in any room were the quiet ones. He was Nightshade's head enforcer and the best Lachlan had ever

  • His Rejected Mate, Her Secret Twins    His Voice

POV: ImogenSame number. It lit up the screen, insistent, and her body responded before her mind caught up. Her heart rate spiked. Her palms went damp. Her wolf fell into the held-breath stillness it reserved for moments when danger was closing in and running was no longer an option.Cooper looked at the phone, then at her face. Whatever he saw made him straighten slowly, as though he had realized without warning that the conversation had shifted."Do you know that number?" he asked. She didn't answer."Imogen.""I don't know the number," she said, which was technically accurate. The number itself was new. She knew the city it came from. She knew the dread climbing through her ribcage with both hands. The phone kept ringing. Her wolf broke its silence and made its displeasure clear in the wordless, blunt way it always did when she was stubbornly ignoring what was obvious.Answer it. Know what you're dealing with. Running blind is worse than running scared. At least fear with a face ha

  • His Rejected Mate, Her Secret Twins    Melbourne Is Calling

POV: ImogenShe didn't answer it.Standing beside the car, she let the Melbourne number ring until it stopped. The phone burned in her hand. Seven rings. Then voicemail. Then silence, broken only by the blood rushing in her ears. She waited. No message came through.Inside the car, Hayley had gone very still, the way she did when she sensed something she hadn't been invited to know. Her grey eyes found Imogen through the window. Wide. Uncertain. Her face crumpled, and she started to cry. Hayley had never been able to separate herself from what the people around her were feeling.Quietly. That was the worst part. Hayley cried the way she did everything, without performance, without demands. Silent tears tracked down her face as she looked at her mother through the glass, absorbing whatever Imogen was feeling without knowing what to do with it.Imogen pulled open the door and got in the car."Hey." She reached back and cupped Hayley's face, brushing the tears away with her thumb. "I'm

  • His Rejected Mate, Her Secret Twins    The Cost of Being Found

POV: ImogenBlake's office was a room designed to put people at ease. Framed student artwork covered the walls. A wide desk held nothing unnecessary. Two low chairs sat across from it, comfortable enough to suggest this was a conversation rather than a judgment. It was absolutely a judgment.Imogen sat with Hayley in her lap and Declan in the chair beside her, watching Blake take his place behind the desk with the expression of a man choosing his words carefully."Three families have already asked me about expulsion," he said."Tyson has been bullying Hayley for three weeks," Imogen said."I know." He held her gaze. "That doesn't change what's on thirty phones right now."In twenty years as principal, Blake had dealt with broken bones, frightened parents, and one small kitchen fire.Never this. She said nothing."The claws, Imogen.""He's five. It was a stress response. It lasted two seconds.""Two seconds is enough." Blake leaned forward, elbows on the desk, voice dropping. "The huma

  • His Rejected Mate, Her Secret Twins    Contain the Damage

POV: ImogenThe yard was chaos. Not the loud, manageable chaos of children at play but the kind that happened when adults lost their composure and children caught it like a cold. Parents were talking over each other near the gate. Two kindergarten teachers were trying to create some kind of perimeter with their bodies and failing. A woman in gym clothes was on her phone, her voice carrying the focused urgency of an important call. Imogen cut through all of it.She reached Declan first. He was still where she had seen him from the corner, planted and certain, his small jaw set in an expression she recognized because she had seen it on someone else for years before forcing herself to stop looking. His eyes had settled back to amber. The claws were gone. To anyone watching without context, he looked like a perfectly ordinary five-year-old boy who happened to be standing very still. Then she saw Hayley. Her daughter was on the ground behind him, knees pulled to her chest, both hands pres

  • His Rejected Mate, Her Secret Twins    What Cooper Knows

POV: ImogenThe staffroom at lunch smelled of microwaved leftovers and ground coffee, and Imogen had claimed the corner chair nearest to the window because she had spent four hours being looked at and needed at least eighteen minutes of not being looked at directly.Cooper found her anyway. He set a coffee beside her without asking and dropped into the chair across from hers, still in his outdoor gear from morning rounds, a dark jacket and boots that suited him without appearing to try. He had a way of settling into her space that managed to be comfortable without being presumptuous, and she had stopped trying to work out how he did it."Chloe thinks my children are special," Imogen said."They are special.""She meant it differently.""What did you say?""All children are special, and that's rather the point of them."He smiled. "Diplomatic.""I've had five years of practice." She looked out the window at the school oval. "She's not wrong. She's just noticing things I'd rather she di
