|| ELINDA'S POV ||
" That's better..."
" After changing ten times?"
Alexis sneered at me hatefully. He knew that it was my other way to show my distress and hatred for him. I accepted the decision made by my brother. He arranged to live with Alexis except for the fact that Alexis's betrayal crossed my mind again and again whenever I saw his face.
I scoffed back, leaning against the door frame,
" You said that I can get whatever I want."
Alexis's eyes hardened on me but his men changed my curtains for the last time. A victorious smirk played on my lips to notice how annoyed he was. I wanted to bore no good wishes for him. A man like him deserved more than my hatred.
Alexis dismissed the crowd before I could finish my words, his glare setting on me this time,
" Wait...I still need one more pair...."
My words were stuck as soon as he crossed the room and gripped my jaw. Pain shot through my bones as he emphasized each one of his words,
" Listen to me, Princess. We have left our fucking past behind. I am being tolerated only because you are my best friend's sister. Do not try to cross me unless you have a death wish. You are nothing..but a fucking rejected mate."
He shoved my face away, leaving me angry on the spot. With his leave, I kicked the vase down next to me, shouting with pained tears,
" I HATE YOU TOO LEONID! I would rather die than be with you here."
It fucking hurt whenever I remembered how he destroyed my peaceful life. Now that we are back again, I would make sure to hate him with every fiber being of my body.
_________
I accepted my fate after battling for the whole day. Since it was decided by my dear brother, it wasn't going to change for me. So I decided to stall around the house. Unlike the modern interior, it was a rich vintage style, the rooms carrying the ancient arts of Europe. I never knew that Alexis was such an artistic man. Then I laughed at my thoughts. I didn't know him even after dating for a long time.
What did I expect more?
My feet paused in front of a family photo. I didn't know anyone except a small boy who had similar features to Alexis. I furrowed my brows tight, leaning down to check on them when a sharp-edged female voice echoed right behind me,
" This is Don's area. You cannot enter here as per your wish, My lady."
I snapped my head behind me to find a tall woman standing. She was a few years older than me in age but again I couldn't guess a lycan's age. I blurted out, not knowing who she was,
" Sorry? You..are?"
She replied proudly, lifting her head as if it was the prouder thing to do in her life,
" I am Fiona. I have served Don Alexis for years. I must guide you. I am also a cook here."
For some reason, Fiona gave me a negative vibe which I hated. She also made me feel like she didn't want me here. Why was she so pissed off? Did Alexis sleep with her? Did he fuck her?
I jerked the ideas off my head. It was none of my business anymore since the day he left me ruined. But I wasn't going to give Fiona the pleasure of tampering with me. Pulling my lips into a smile, I replied politely, grabbing the coffee that she was taking somewhere,
" I take orders only from the Royals. You know our customs, don't you?"
Fiona's face turned paper white. I hated to introduce myself as the princess of the Royal dynasty but sometimes it was necessary to put people in their places. The sound of people rushing caught our attention. Fiona ran to the window side to take a look. I followed her to find the man carrying a boy around thirteen years old. He was bleeding and his whole body turned blue. Even from a distance, I could feel that his life was fading. I gasped in shock, ready to go down,
" Oh my goddess! We should help them."
Fiona stopped me harshly, her words hit like a slap on my face,
" YOU CAN'T. Outsiders aren't allowed to interfere in Maurenders's affairs."
I retorted sharply, gritting my teeth together,
" LET ME GO! I can help him."
Fiona let out a mocking laugh. She replied with detest,
" A princess like you has no talent except your pretty face. Do not bother with our men. Besides, you are just a guest. Why should I trust you? Don has strictly ordered to not let you go outside."
Anger boiled in my heart. Just because I was a princess, Fiona dared to call me ' stupid '. She believed that she was the best just because she had been working for this criminal family for years. I pretended to step back, allowing her to leave first.
Before she could cross the door outside, I dashed outside in the direction of that injured boy with Fiona shouting after me. It didn't take much while for me to find it. They took him to a separate house for healing. On my arrival, Matteo shot a dagger-like glare at Fiona, my presence being hated by everyone,
" WHY IS SHE HERE?"
I kept asking impatiently, staring down at the boy who was looking no less than a dead body,
" What happened to him? I know such cases. Did he..."
Matteo's growl off my words, his eyes pinning down at me,
" GO AWAY, PRINCESS. You shouldn't enter where you don't belong. Go back to your room. NOW. We don't appreciate help from strangers."
I bit my lips together hard. I could feel Fiona smiling on my back maliciously. Why was everyone obsessed with calling me a stupid girl?
Just because I was a princess, I wasn't so dumb to understand the seriousness of the situation. I kept standing at my place, observing the boy who was turning paler in each passing moment.
A flashback hit me hard. When I was ten, my adopted parents brought a little guy to our house. They found him on the street after he was attacked by some rogues. I saw how badly they tried to help the boy. When the boy survived, my parents including me felt the happiness of saving someone. From that time, I always wished to help someone who was fighting for life. Now I had the chance to do that, I couldn't just sit back and see him dying especially when other help wasn't around. Thankfully, I learned a valuable thing about my life before coming here as a princess of this dynasty.
Chapter 147|| Alexis's POV ||It felt like I had only returned to the pack house and the storm was already at hand.I stepped into the house, the silence of the house almost suffocating as I walked through the halls. My mind was still whirling with what I had told the Mafia Pack leader, and the anger of the fight with my grandfather had not even begun to wear off. It was all too much to tolerate. As I walked towards the living room, I saw him there—Grandfather. The man who had brought me up, shaped me into the person I was, but also the man who always assumed to know what was good for me, even when he did not. His stiff posture, the tension in his shoulders, and the chill in his eyes said it all. He was waiting for me, as always, to hear his judgment.I didn't even have to utter a word before he began. His voice cut through the silence like a knife. "You're ruining yourself."My rage flared, but I kept myself in check. I couldn't afford to lose it—now. "What in the world are you talk
Chapter 146|| ELINDA's POV ||The moment I stepped out of the hidden passage after killing them, the cold night air in my throat.Mercus was already at the car. Moonlight streamed across the hood when he quietly flung open the back door. He looked at the boy—indeed looked at him—and nodded once silently at me.All the way through the drive, the boy huddled against me, his hands grasping my cloak in a tight hold. I went on talking softly, again and again, of safety, of mothers waiting, fires and soup and warm blankets. He never uttered a word. But when I looked down, I could see that a single tear slid silently down his cheek. When we finally reached the safehouse, the world seemed to hold its breath. And then the door swung open, and the healer stumbled out. Her veil was displaced, and her hair was all in a messy knot, but none of it mattered. She looked at her son in my arms, and time stopped for her.She collapsed at our feet, sobbing, gulping. "My baby," she cried, holding him t
CHAPTER 145|| ALBERTO'S POV ||I did not expected it.The day started just like any other. The office was bustling with activity, a buzz of emails and documents competing for attention. But all that couldn't prepare me for what happened next.Catherine's parents came rushing into my study, their expressions morphed with frustration and worry. My mother walked beside them, her posture straight, as if she already expected what was to come. I stood up, sensing the air was heavy with tension, and stepped forward."What is it?" I inquired, trying to ignore the confusion that hung around me.Mrs. Bennett's voice trembled when she talked. "Catherine is sick, Alberto. She fainted at work today. The doctor told us it's stress. But this has been going on for quite some time now. She has not been eating. She's barely been sleeping. All of this because of those pictures."I stood there in shock. The photographs. The scandal. The rumors that had been going around us for weeks. I could already sen
Chapter 144|| ELINDA's POV ||The healer leaned on the edge of the bed, slumping her shoulders and gazing at the floor. She hadn't said a word in several minutes, and I sat patiently, aware that too much intensity would send her into shutdown mode all over again. Finally, after a strained, shaking breath, she began to speak."Kai. he's got my son," she whispered, her voice cracking. "He took him months back. I don't even know where they are keeping him anymore. That is why I did what he told me to do. That is why I placed the spell."I could sense its heaviness weighing me down inside my chest. My fists clenched at my sides. I had believed there was more to it, but hearing her confirm it made it so—and unacceptable."He used you," I breathed, taking a step forward. "He used your love as a mother against you."She nodded, her eyes brimming with unshed tears. "He knew I was capable of Spellcraft. He threatened that if I did not obey, if I ever refused, he would."She couldn't go on. He
Chapter 143|| Alexis's POV ||The air in the dungeon smelt of mold and rusted metal. My wrists were bruised from the cold metal encircling me like a curse, and the stone beneath me sucked all heat from my body. My mind thudded with weakness, my body icy from the position I had been held in for hours, or perhaps days. Time meant nothing to me. But what plagued me more than pain or darkness was the question—what would Elinda do now to save me?Would she even try?I tried to wash the doubt away, but it clung to me stubbornly. The last thing I wanted was for her to keep hurting because of me. But deep inside of me, a weak hope whispered anyway—She'll come. She has to.The thud of footsteps echoed from the hallway outside. I straightened up, my heart racing. The clanking of heavy boots grew louder, then ceased. I listened to keys entered into the lock door.Three men emerged, towering, masked, and intimidating. I recognized them at a glance. They were the council's dogs, loyal who were t
Chapter 142|| Elinda's POV ||The air inside the palace had been heavy, and my own heart had been even heavier. Mercus's footsteps had run along the hallway before he stood in my room. His face had been pale, his eyes black with concern."Elinda…" he had begun, his voice husky, as if the words would break the tenuous silence that surrounded us. "Alexis has been taken. Alberto's men have arrested him."I had stopped in my tracks, the words cutting through me. "What do you mean, taken?" My voice had shaken with an effort to sound firm. "Where is he now? What happened?"Mercus's face had grown darker, his eyes flashing in anger, "Alberto had him imprisoned somewhere. They're taking him to the palace. It's a trap. The council's involvement in it had been unmistakable this time.""Why? Why now?" I had asked, inching closer to him, my breaths growing faster. "Alexis. he hadn't done anything wrong!Mercus had paused before he spoke, clearly weighed down by the harshness of reality. "It did
