Chapter 2

ผู้เขียน: Tart Explosion
After I pressed the button, nothing changed in the hallway.

The vending machine downstairs continued to hum. The air-conditioning unit outside the neighboring room kept dripping water.

Five seconds passed, and my back was already drenched in sweat.

What if I'd been mistaken?

Maybe it was just a few wrinkles, and the bedsheet only moved because of the wind.

Was that really enough to justify triggering the emergency alarm?

Ten seconds passed, but there was still no movement from Room 617.

15 seconds after I pressed the button, sirens sounded downstairs. From the sound alone, I could tell that several vehicles were coming, not just one.

They blared all the way from the university gates to the dorm building.

Tires screeched, car doors slammed, and a jumble of footsteps pounded up the stairs.

At the front of the group was a short-haired police officer in her 30s. The moment she reached the sixth floor, her eyes locked onto me.

"Did you call the police?"

"Yes."

"What happened?"

"There are four students inside," I replied, pointing toward Room 617. "Something's wrong."

"What's wrong?"

I opened my mouth to explain, but before I could get a word out, a sob came from behind the door.

"Ms. Chapman…"

It was a young woman's voice, soft and trembling with tears.

"Ms. Chapman, why did you lock us in?"

Everyone in the hallway froze.

"We were just sleeping…" the voice continued. "What did we do wrong? There are so many police cars outside. I'm scared…

"We couldn't afford to go home, so we stayed here. If the university punishes us for this, my mom will give me hell… Please, Ms. Chapman. Please open the door…"

Each plea sounded more wounded and pitiful than the last.

Officer Joanna Martel turned to look at me, her expression changing.

"They're awake and talking," one of the paramedics beside her said, frowning. "What exactly made you think something was wrong?"

Before I could answer, a furious roar erupted from the stairwell.

"Ms. Chapman!"

Cole Levinsky, head of dormitory operations in Jameston University's facilities department, came charging up the stairs. He'd lost one of his slippers on the way and had hastily thrown a jacket over his pajamas.

He glanced at the police crowding the hallway, then at the access control panel showing that the doors were locked.

Finally, he turned his furious gaze on me, looking as though he wanted to tear me apart.

"Did you press the emergency alarm?" he hissed. "Do you have any idea what happens when you press that thing? The police station, campus security, the university president's office—everyone gets notified!

"The university's on break! And this is what you do?

"Those young women were sleeping peacefully, and you locked them inside! That's unlawful confinement! Do you even understand that?"

He pointed at the door, his hand trembling with rage.

"If you can't give me a proper explanation for this, you'd better pack your things and leave by tomorrow!"

Before he'd even finished speaking, the hallway erupted into chaos again.

The sirens had woken every student still living on campus. With the building locked down and no one able to leave, they swarmed to the sixth floor.

Some wore pajamas, while others clutched their pillows. A few held up their phones and started livestreaming.

"Ms. Chapman, what gives you the right to lock down the whole building?"

"I have a shift at six tomorrow morning! I'll lose money if I'm late!"

"What happened in Room 617? Did someone die?"

"I heard the dorm supervisor went crazy and locked the women inside."

"Unbelievable! It's a holiday, and she's treating us like criminals?"

One phone camera after another was shoved in my face.

"Ms. Chapman, care to explain yourself?"

"Yeah! Give us an explanation!"

Dozens of pairs of eyes bore down on me. Officer Martel, Mr. Levinsky, and even the woman sobbing behind the door were waiting for an answer.

"Ms. Chapman, do you hate us or something?" she cried. "What did we ever do wrong?"

I stood in the middle of the crowd, looking like a lunatic. Everyone thought I'd made a mistake, and I was beginning to believe them.

Still, one image kept replaying in my mind. Those creases slanting toward the space beneath the bed simply didn't seem natural.

The investigation lasted six months. Greenleaf Scholarship Foundation had used its charitable image to target female college students from struggling families. First, they lured them in with promises of high-paying part-time jobs. Then they secretly filmed them, forced them to take out loans, and made them recruit more students when they couldn't repay the money. If anyone resisted, they used the victims' home addresses to threaten their families. If anyone filed a complaint, they used donations and personal connections to make the problem disappear.Kevin wasn't Anna's cousin, and the digital letter of authorization he'd presented had also been forged at the last minute. He'd been waiting near the dorm that night. Once Vivian got her hands on the memory card, they'd planned to stuff all four young women into a maintenance cart and transport them to a warehouse off campus. There, they would force the women to reveal their cloud storage passwords before staging what looked like

We rushed back to Room 617 in the middle of the night. The crime scene was still sealed off. The moment I stepped inside, I headed straight for Anna's bottom bunk. The forensic team had already removed the bedsheet and laid it flat on an evidence cloth. All four corners looked ordinary, but near the foot of the bed, I spotted a short piece of red thread. The stitches were rough, clearly done in a hurry. I put on a pair of gloves and ran my fingers over the spot. There was something hard hidden inside. A forensic investigator carefully snipped open the stitching with a pair of scissors, and a memory card no bigger than a fingernail fell out. Mr. Levinsky, who was standing in the doorway, looked devastated."So there really was something hidden in there?""What's wrong?" I glanced at him. "Are you disappointed?""That's not what I meant," he replied, giving an awkward laugh. "I was just under a lot of pressure earlier, Laura. Jameston University's reputation matters, you

The four young women were rushed to the hospital for treatment to flush the drugs from their systems. At three in the morning, Anna was the first to regain consciousness. When Officer Martel and I arrived at her hospital room, she was trembling beneath her blanket. The moment she saw me, tears spilled down her cheeks."Ms. Chapman… I'm sorry."I hurried over and took her hand."What are you apologizing to me for?""I should've listened to you," Anna sobbed, barely catching her breath. "You always told us that if something seemed too good to be true, it probably was."The part-time job offered by Greenleaf Scholarship Foundation paid two thousand dollars for a single session. The work supposedly involved modeling clothes for an online store. Transportation and makeup were provided, and the pay was 500 dollars an hour. For students struggling financially, it was an irresistible offer.Erin Zane had been the first to take the job. After the photo shoot, however, the organizers

Even as Kevin was being handcuffed, he continued to struggle and protest. "She just woke up! She's disoriented and doesn't know what she's saying. You can't use her statement as evidence!"He turned to Officer Martel, his voice sharp with indignation. "Listen, officer. Don't let some young girl manipulate you into jumping to conclusions."Officer Martel gave him a cold laugh. "Fine. You can keep warning me all you want. Take him away.""I'm a licensed attorney!" Kevin cried out in panic. "What gives you the right to handcuff me?""The fact that your phone was used to control the tablet in Room 617," Officer Martel replied. Nathan held up an evidence bag. "You deleted the chat history, but you didn't manage to erase all the remote access logs."Kevin fell silent. The woman they'd dragged out from beneath the bed was identified as Vivian Quigley. At 28, she was a graduate student at Jameston University who volunteered at the campus financial aid center. She was also Kevin'

The moment the technician said those words, the entire hallway fell silent.Kevin's smile vanished."If there's someone in there, then all the more reason to open the door immediately," he said, reaching for the handle of Room 617.Officer Martel grabbed his wrist."What's the rush?""I'm just worried about my cousin.""Fine. You can worry from over there. Step back."Kevin didn't move.Officer Martel fixed him with a cold stare, her voice hardening."You heard what I said, right?"Two officers immediately stepped forward, restrained him, and pinned him against the wall."You have no evidence to detain me!" Kevin shouted. "Everyone's watching the livestream. You pull anything on me, and I'll make sure you're all trending for the wrong reasons!"Officer Martel ignored him completely and gave the tactical team a nod.One officer raised a ballistic shield while another took the keys from my hand."Everyone stand back once the door opens."The key had barely turned halfway w

"An investigation at the highest level?" Mr. Levinsky stared at me as though I'd just said something insane. "Laura, do you even understand what it means to bring in major crimes and forensic investigators? I can't believe you're doing all this over a bedsheet. Do you think you're some kind of detective?"Kevin laughed, pointing his phone camera at me. "Ms. Chapman, suspicion doesn't substitute for evidence," he said, his voice turning cold. "The police don't have a search warrant, and you have no authority to keep four students locked in their dorm room based on nothing more than your suspicions."If anything happens to my client, I will hold both the university and you personally liable."The comments were flying so fast across the livestream that they were almost impossible to read."Has this dorm supervisor lost her mind?" "She needs to be fired immediately.""She's using students' lives to put on a show!"At the same time, the crying behind the door grew louder."Ke
