Chapter 4

ผู้เขียน: Tart Explosion
"An investigation at the highest level?"

Mr. Levinsky stared at me as though I'd just said something insane.

"Laura, do you even understand what it means to bring in major crimes and forensic investigators? I can't believe you're doing all this over a bedsheet. Do you think you're some kind of detective?"

Kevin laughed, pointing his phone camera at me.

"Ms. Chapman, suspicion doesn't substitute for evidence," he said, his voice turning cold. "The police don't have a search warrant, and you have no authority to keep four students locked in their dorm room based on nothing more than your suspicions.

"If anything happens to my client, I will hold both the university and you personally liable."

The comments were flying so fast across the livestream that they were almost impossible to read.

"Has this dorm supervisor lost her mind?"

"She needs to be fired immediately."

"She's using students' lives to put on a show!"

At the same time, the crying behind the door grew louder.

"Kevin, please help me… I really can't breathe…"

The paramedic, Leon Wilkins, immediately urged everyone to hurry.

"We can't keep dragging this out," he said. "If one of the students develops respiratory alkalosis from hyperventilating, the consequences could be serious."

Everyone was pressuring me to hand over the keys, but I only tightened my grip.

Just then, Officer Martel took the inspection sheet from my hand. She studied me for a few seconds before pulling out her phone.

"Get the technical team up to the sixth floor," she ordered. "Recheck all the voice recordings, heat signatures, and communication data."

Mr. Levinsky was beside himself.

"Officer, she's just a dorm supervisor making a big deal out of nothing! Why are you going along with this?"

Officer Martel ignored him.

"If anything goes wrong, I'll take responsibility."

Kevin's smile froze. Soon, however, he adjusted his glasses and regained his composure.

"Fine. Run your tests," he said. "But I want the entire process livestreamed to prevent anyone from falsifying the results."

Ten minutes later, the technical team arrived.

They isolated the voice recordings from inside the room and ran them through voice comparison software.

The results confirmed that the voice matched Anna's and that the phone sending the messages was inside Room 617.

Another thermal scan still showed four human-shaped heat signatures.

All four students were accounted for, and everything appeared normal.

Mr. Levinsky let out a long sigh of relief, and the students gathered in the hallway erupted.

"Finished checking yet?"

"Can you finally open the door now?"

"Apologize, Ms. Chapman!"

"You owe everyone a public apology!"

Kevin held the test results up to his livestream camera.

"The police have confirmed that all four students are inside the room," he announced. "I'm formally demanding that the lockdown be lifted."

He turned to face me.

"So, Ms. Chapman, where exactly is this kidnapping you keep talking about?"

Several pairs of eyes turned toward me again.

I stared at the thermal images on the technician's screen, my heart sinking with every passing second.

Had I really been wrong?

Then I noticed something that didn't add up.

"Why haven't any of the four heat signatures moved?"

The technician paused, caught off guard.

More than 20 minutes had passed since the scan began. No matter how deeply someone slept, their breathing and even the slightest movements of their limbs would cause subtle changes in their thermal outline.

But the four figures on the screen looked as though they'd been nailed to their beds. Not even an arm had shifted.

Meanwhile, Anna was still crying behind the door. How could someone who was frightened, sobbing, and struggling to breathe remain completely motionless for 20 minutes?

I whipped around to look at Kevin, whose fingers tightened around his phone.

"Run a forensic examination of the area beneath the bed."

I pointed at the gap beneath the door to Room 617.

"Slide an endoscopic camera underneath and record the bed frame and the floor beneath Anna's bunk."

Officer Martel nodded.

A technician crouched down and carefully slid a slender camera beneath the door. The lens moved past the shoe rack before slowly turning toward Anna's bed.

The bedsheet hung so low that it nearly touched the floor.

As the image was magnified, several tiny black rubber fragments came into view along the edge of the bed.

Beside them lay two snapped nylon fibers.

A forensic investigator studied the screen for several seconds.

"The bedsheet has been under sustained downward tension, and the force is coming from beneath the bed."

He looked up, his expression grave.

"There's a fifth person under that bed."

The investigation lasted six months. Greenleaf Scholarship Foundation had used its charitable image to target female college students from struggling families. First, they lured them in with promises of high-paying part-time jobs. Then they secretly filmed them, forced them to take out loans, and made them recruit more students when they couldn't repay the money. If anyone resisted, they used the victims' home addresses to threaten their families. If anyone filed a complaint, they used donations and personal connections to make the problem disappear.Kevin wasn't Anna's cousin, and the digital letter of authorization he'd presented had also been forged at the last minute. He'd been waiting near the dorm that night. Once Vivian got her hands on the memory card, they'd planned to stuff all four young women into a maintenance cart and transport them to a warehouse off campus. There, they would force the women to reveal their cloud storage passwords before staging what looked like

We rushed back to Room 617 in the middle of the night. The crime scene was still sealed off. The moment I stepped inside, I headed straight for Anna's bottom bunk. The forensic team had already removed the bedsheet and laid it flat on an evidence cloth. All four corners looked ordinary, but near the foot of the bed, I spotted a short piece of red thread. The stitches were rough, clearly done in a hurry. I put on a pair of gloves and ran my fingers over the spot. There was something hard hidden inside. A forensic investigator carefully snipped open the stitching with a pair of scissors, and a memory card no bigger than a fingernail fell out. Mr. Levinsky, who was standing in the doorway, looked devastated."So there really was something hidden in there?""What's wrong?" I glanced at him. "Are you disappointed?""That's not what I meant," he replied, giving an awkward laugh. "I was just under a lot of pressure earlier, Laura. Jameston University's reputation matters, you

The four young women were rushed to the hospital for treatment to flush the drugs from their systems. At three in the morning, Anna was the first to regain consciousness. When Officer Martel and I arrived at her hospital room, she was trembling beneath her blanket. The moment she saw me, tears spilled down her cheeks."Ms. Chapman… I'm sorry."I hurried over and took her hand."What are you apologizing to me for?""I should've listened to you," Anna sobbed, barely catching her breath. "You always told us that if something seemed too good to be true, it probably was."The part-time job offered by Greenleaf Scholarship Foundation paid two thousand dollars for a single session. The work supposedly involved modeling clothes for an online store. Transportation and makeup were provided, and the pay was 500 dollars an hour. For students struggling financially, it was an irresistible offer.Erin Zane had been the first to take the job. After the photo shoot, however, the organizers

Even as Kevin was being handcuffed, he continued to struggle and protest. "She just woke up! She's disoriented and doesn't know what she's saying. You can't use her statement as evidence!"He turned to Officer Martel, his voice sharp with indignation. "Listen, officer. Don't let some young girl manipulate you into jumping to conclusions."Officer Martel gave him a cold laugh. "Fine. You can keep warning me all you want. Take him away.""I'm a licensed attorney!" Kevin cried out in panic. "What gives you the right to handcuff me?""The fact that your phone was used to control the tablet in Room 617," Officer Martel replied. Nathan held up an evidence bag. "You deleted the chat history, but you didn't manage to erase all the remote access logs."Kevin fell silent. The woman they'd dragged out from beneath the bed was identified as Vivian Quigley. At 28, she was a graduate student at Jameston University who volunteered at the campus financial aid center. She was also Kevin'

The moment the technician said those words, the entire hallway fell silent.Kevin's smile vanished."If there's someone in there, then all the more reason to open the door immediately," he said, reaching for the handle of Room 617.Officer Martel grabbed his wrist."What's the rush?""I'm just worried about my cousin.""Fine. You can worry from over there. Step back."Kevin didn't move.Officer Martel fixed him with a cold stare, her voice hardening."You heard what I said, right?"Two officers immediately stepped forward, restrained him, and pinned him against the wall."You have no evidence to detain me!" Kevin shouted. "Everyone's watching the livestream. You pull anything on me, and I'll make sure you're all trending for the wrong reasons!"Officer Martel ignored him completely and gave the tactical team a nod.One officer raised a ballistic shield while another took the keys from my hand."Everyone stand back once the door opens."The key had barely turned halfway w
