CHAPTER 4: Where's Vesper

Kaelen paced the carpeted floor of the healers' wing, his arms crossed tightly over his chest.

Through the heavy oak door, he could hear the hushed whispers of the pack surgeons as they bandaged Sienna’s shoulder. She was safe now. The head healer had assured him her wounds were superficial—a few shallow scratches that would fade into faint white lines in less than a week.

A heavy, exhausting sigh slipped from Kaelen’s lips. His Alpha aura, which had been flared to a violent, suffocating point during his sprint through the woods, finally began to cool down.

Now that the immediate panic had passed, the cold, quiet reality of what he had done began to creep into his chest.

The ceremony.

"Knox," Kaelen called out, not turning around.

Knox, who had been standing at attention near the arched window, stepped forward immediately. "Yes, Alpha?"

"Go back to the Sacred Den," Kaelen commanded, rubbing the back of his neck where a dull, throbbing ache was starting to take hold. "Tell Elder Robert to reconvene the council in the private study. Have the servants clear the hall, light the braziers, and tell Vesper to meet me in my quarters in twenty minutes."

Knox hesitated, his boots shifting uncomfortably on the stone floor. "Alpha... Lady Vesper—"

"She’s angry. I know," Kaelen interrupted, his voice dropping into a tired, dismissive groan. "I know how she is, Knox. She’s rigid. She takes duty so seriously that she can't see the bigger picture. But once I explain that Sienna’s life was on the line, she’ll understand. She’s a warrior; she knows priorities."

He smoothed down the front of his ceremonial tunic, brushing off bits of pine needle and dried mud from his run through the forest.

"We’ll finish the blood pledge privately tonight," Kaelen added, almost convincing himself. "We don't need the grand audience anyway. Tell her I’m on my way."

"Alpha," Knox said, his voice unusually low, almost grim. "I don't think Lady Vesper is in her quarters."

Kaelen frowned, turning his head to glare at his second-in-command. "Where else would she be? It’s past midnight. She isn't going to wander the perimeter in her ceremony dress."

Without waiting for Knox to reply, Kaelen pushed past him, his long, heavy strides cutting through the quiet corridors toward the central palace.

The grand doors of the Sacred Den were wide open, swaying slightly in the freezing draft blowing down from the northern peaks.

When Kaelen stepped across the threshold, he expected to see servants sweeping up the scattered flower petals. He expected Elder Robert sitting at the council table, waiting to scold him for his breach of protocol.

Instead, the hall was completely pitch-black.

The braziers had been extinguished. The high altar—where the sacred moonfire had burned continuously for three generations—was cold, filled with gray, lifeless ash. The heavy velvet banners of the Bloodmoon Pack hung limp in the darkness.

At the base of the altar steps stood Elder Robert, accompanied by two senior pack councilors. None of them bowed when Kaelen approached. They simply stood there, their aged faces illuminated only by the faint silver moonlight streaming through the high arched windows.

"Robert," Kaelen said, his brow furrowing as he looked around the desolate chamber. "Why is it dark in here? Where are the guards?"

Elder Robert lifted his chin, his old gray eyes locking onto Kaelen with an expression that made Kaelen’s stomach drop—it wasn't anger. It was pure, devastating pity.

"There is no need for guards in an empty house, Alpha," Robert said softly.

"What are you talking about?" Kaelen scoffed, taking three quick steps toward the altar. "Call the servants. Re-light the braziers. Send someone up to Vesper’s room—"

"She is not in her room, Kaelen," Robert interrupted, dropping his formal title entirely. "She is gone."

A sharp, incredulous laugh burst from Kaelen’s throat. "Gone? Don't be ridiculous. She’s throwing a fit because I left the altar. She’s probably down at the training grounds or walking off her temper near the lake."

He closed his eyes, reaching out through the territorial pack bond to ping her consciousness. He expected her familiar, steady presence to ripple back—a cool, comforting breeze that had anchored his Alpha spirit for three years.

He pushed his mind outward.

Nothing.

Kaelen froze. He pushed harder, thrusting his Alpha aura violently through the pack's neural web, searching every inch of the eastern borders, the town center, the barracks.

There was no response. The thread that connected the Alpha to his designated Luna wasn't just silent—it was dead. Cut so cleanly that it felt as though she had never existed within the pack's borders at all.

A sudden, sharp pain flared in Kaelen’s chest, making him stumble back half a step.

"What... what is this?" Kaelen rasped, his hand flying to his collarbone, pressing against the bare skin where her pack mark used to resonate. "Why can't I feel her?!"

"Because she severed the link, Alpha," Elder Robert said, his voice ringing with cold finality. "She stood before this altar, stripped off her ceremony sleeves, and revoked her allegiance to the Bloodmoon Pack."

"She can't do that!" Kaelen bellowed, his voice booming through the empty rafters, his eyes flaring silver as his wolf surged to the surface in a wave of furious panic. "She is my betrothed! Our marriage was sanctioned by the High Council! She cannot break a sacred oath over a misunderstanding!"

"It was no misunderstanding," Elder Robert replied sternly, taking a step toward Kaelen and holding out his hand.

Lying in the elder's palm was the ancestral Frost-Rune signet ring—or rather, a wax imprint of it left on the official council ledger, stamped directly beside a freshly signed decree of land reclamation.

"Lady Vesper invoked the Ancient Dowry Clause," Robert explained, his voice shaking slightly. "Under the laws of the Northern Coalition, if an Alpha fails to complete the blood pledge before the moon reaches its apex due to abandonment, the betrothal contract is null and void. The northern fortresses, the iron valley mines, and the barrier defense rights... they are no longer property of the Bloodmoon Pack."

Kaelen stared at the wax seal, his breathing becoming fast, ragged, and shallow.

"She took her lands back?" Kaelen whispered, his face draining of all color. "No... no, she wouldn't do that. The northern fortresses protect our entire eastern flank! Without those garrisons, the rogue warbands will tear through our outer villages!"

"She did not merely take them back, Kaelen," Elder Robert said, looking at him with deep sorrow. "She left the territory entirely. She walked out of the north gates less than an hour ago, completely unescorted."

"Walked out?!" Kaelen roared, grabbing Robert by the shoulders. "And you let her?! You let the sole heiress of the High Frost-Rune bloodline walk into the dark alone?!"

"We had no authority to stop her!" Robert yelled back, shoving Kaelen’s hands off him. "She is no longer your bride! She is an independent sovereign of an ancient bloodline, and you humiliated her in front of every noble house in the eastern territory for a girl with a scratched arm!"

Kaelen stood frozen, the harsh words echoing against the cold stone walls.

An independent sovereign.

She’s gone.

"No," Kaelen muttered, shaking his head frantically as he backed away from the altar steps. "No, she’s trying to punish me. She wants me to chase her. She wants me to beg."

He turned on his heel, his cloak billowing behind him as he marched toward the grand doors. "Knox! Assemble the first patrol! We’re tracking her scent to the border! I’ll bring her back myself!"

"Kaelen, stop!" Elder Robert called out after him, his voice echoing with stark, chilling warning. "You don't understand what happened in this hall tonight!"

Kaelen paused at the doorway, looking back over his shoulder with blazing, desperate silver eyes. "What could I possibly not understand?!"

Elder Robert looked up at the dark, empty balcony level overlooking the Sacred Den—the upper gallery where King Lucian had been sitting just an hour ago.

"Lycan scouts were spotted on the ridge near the Blackwood Pass," Robert whispered, his voice trembling with sheer terror. "King Lucian was in this valley tonight, Kaelen. And Vesper didn't leave alone."

Vesper’s POVThe silence of the abandoned Sacred Den didn't feel like defeat. It felt like cold air rushing into a room that had been suffocatingly crowded for three years.I didn't rush up the grand marble staircase to the upper gallery. I moved slowly, the bare soles of my feet treading across the crushed jasmine blossoms and the discarded silver petals scattered over the cold stone. I unlaced the heavy silk sleeves of my ceremony dress as I walked, letting the white fabric drop behind me like a shed skin.High above, sitting lazily on the dark mahogany balustrade of the balcony, King Lucian watched every move.He didn't wear ceremonial silk or polished silver armor like the southern Alphas who spent their lives preening for courtiers. He wore heavy, weathered leather and iron-studded pauldrons scored with deep, old claws—trophies from beasts in the Northern Savage Wastes that would make Kaelen's enforcers faint. His dark hair was tied back loosely, and his eyes—a terrifying, unholy

They looked at her straight spine, her flawless Frost-Rune lineage, her effortless control over her wolf, and they felt intimidated. They respected her.Respect. What a useless, heavy word.Respect didn't make a powerful Alpha tear his own kingdom apart to keep you safe. Respect didn't make Kaelen lie awake
