Sophia felt foolish for believing a miracle would happen—that Alex would cherish her the way she had always dreamed.

He wanted a divorce, and as she always had, she would listen to him.

Sitting on the bedroom floor, she let out a shaky breath. He had given her twenty-four hours, but she had no reason to wait. She would leave tonight.

Her fingers trembled as she held onto a piece of paper, tears slipping down her face. It was a letter she had written at eighteen, meant for Alex. She had never found the courage to give it to him.

Their story had begun in high school. She had fallen during P.E., scraping her knee on the field’s rough surface. The memory was as vivid as daylight.

On her way to the infirmary, someone called her name. She turned and saw a boy running toward her. By the time he reached her, he was gasping for breath, hands on his knees as he tried to steady himself.

"Hey," Alex exhaled, then ruffled his hair, offering her a nervous smile. "I saw what happened. I had a novelty bandage in my bag, so I ran to my class to get it. I hope you don’t mind."

Before she could decline, he crouched down and carefully pressed the bandage over her wound. His hands trembled slightly, as if nervous.

Sophia had been stunned. Everyone at school knew who Alexander Carter was… popular, admired, always surrounded by people. But here he was, kneeling before her, tending to a simple scrape.

When he stood, he met her gaze with those pale green eyes. "I'm Alexander Carter. But you can just call me Alex."

"I’m Sophia," She replied, smiling despite the pain in her knee.

And in that moment, her heart fluttered.

Maybe it had been teenage infatuation, but his small gesture had made her so happy. From that day on, he brought her the same type of bandage daily, replacing the old one. Soon, he began bringing her snacks from the cafeteria, even though she never asked.

Their bond deepened, and Sophia had hoped it meant something more. It was during that time she had written her first love letter. But she never gave it to him.

Their story was sweet.

Until everything changed.

After high school, Alex went to university, and the distance between them grew. At first, he answered her calls. But by his second year, he stopped.

Meanwhile, Sophia started college later than him, with a five-year medical program. Alex had already graduated two years before her.

It was in her fourth year, her father arranged her marriage—to his friend's son. The decision was abrupt, with no explanation, but when she learned who she was to marry, she had agreed without hesitation.

A tear slipped down her cheek as she read the words of her eighteen-year-old self. The letter was filled with innocent hope, a girl’s heart laid bare for a boy who would never read it.

Unable to finish, she stood, brushing her tangled hair out of her tear-streaked face. She caught a glimpse of herself in the mirror. Red-rimmed eyes, exhaustion etched into every feature.

Reaching for her suitcase, she rolled it toward the door. As she reached for the handle, she attempted to slip the letter into her bag. But in her distraction, it slipped from her fingers, falling unnoticed to the floor.

Alex had always been her first choice. But to him, she had never been enough.

A bitter chuckle escaped her lips as she stepped out of the bedroom. This had never been her home, just a place where she existed. He had let her sleep here while he stayed in the room across the hall.

With each step, her heart fractured a little more.

In the dining room, she pulled a pen from her bag and opened the file on the table. Her fingers trembled as she signed the divorce papers without bothering to read the fine print.

Sophia pressed the pen to the last page, right beside Alex’s name. That was when her gaze caught the section on alimony.

A humorless smile curled her lips. "If money is your way of making me feel okay, keep it to yourself," She murmured.

She didn’t need his alimony. She hadn’t signed these papers with tears in her eyes. She had signed them with the understanding that this was it.

He wanted this. She was giving it to him.

Tears wouldn’t change anything.

They wouldn’t make Alex reconsider.

And they wouldn’t make him love her.

Someone out there had orchestrated this, planted the seed of doubt in Alex’s mind. Finn was her friend, nothing more. But the photos Alex mentioned… Someone had set her up.

And yet, none of it mattered anymore. Why? simply 'cause he chose not to see through her reasoning or listen to her words.

Alex Carter was no longer her concern.

Sophia had signed the papers. She had accepted that he didn’t care for her, that he never had, and never would.

When she stepped outside, the rain had stopped. The air was cold, the night quiet. A car idled in the driveway, and the driver stepped out as she approached.

"Young Madam," Eric, the chauffeur, said cautiously. "Are you going somewhere? I was instructed to take you to your parents’ home in the morning, not tonight."

Sophia gave him a small, tired smile. "Alex said that?"

Eric hesitated before nodding.

"Don't worry, I can drive myself," she said.

The older man frowned, glancing between her suitcase and the house. He had always been aware of the strain in their marriage.

Still, he helped her load her bags into her car, trying one last time to convince her to wait until morning.

She refused.

Settling into the driver’s seat, she gripped the steering wheel, taking a slow breath.

A few minutes later, she drove away, hoping and praying that she could leave behind everything she felt for Alex.

But some things weren’t so easily forgotten.

Alex looked up, his eyes finding Sophia’s, her brows were curved in discomfort. His shoulders slumped slightly, knowing that at this point there was no way he could hold her into believing him blindly, especially not after what Alice just said. His jaw clenched in annoyance, and he darted a look towards Alice, who unfolded a paper she took from her purse before handing it over to his old man whose expression remained blank as he received it and reached for his glasses, settling it on the bridge of his nose to have a closer look at the paper. There was a long moment of silence as everyone waited for a reaction or anything at all, but there was nothing except for the slight tick evident in his jaw as he pursed his lips. Alex knew immediately that whatever his grandfather saw on the paper caused an unbearable displeasure. After about thirty minutes, since the dinner was interrupted, Alex knew one thing for certain—Alice had come prepared, whatever was unfolding was clearly planned

  • Is Mr. CEO Our Daddy? Ex-Husband Returns As My Patient   105. Paternity Test

Bile rose up Sophia’s throat and all of a sudden she wanted to be anywhere but there. She wasn’t sure what to do except stand in the middle of the sudden disruption brewing right in her presence. And as if they could all sense her discomfort, every single eye darted toward her at the same time. She could barely look anyone in the eyes, but she still felt the sharpness of their gazes pressing into her. There was pity. Smugness. And heat from a pair of eyes that felt like satisfaction. There was another look she couldn’t quite place but she ignored it all and her attention settled on Alex. He was looking at her with warmth as he reached for her hand. The way he looked at her made something in her chest ache. His eyes didn’t flicker away. They stayed on her begging her to trust him. Sophia swallowed. She wasn’t sure how long his hand had been outstretched, waiting for her, but eventually she took it. The moment she did, she noticed the slight drop of his shoulders, like he’d been hol

  • Is Mr. CEO Our Daddy? Ex-Husband Returns As My Patient   104. A Set Up

“Annabelle,” Sophia said with a small smile as she turned around to find Alex’s younger sister beaming at her with a bright smile; her eyes, which were similar to her brother's, were warmer and of a deeper shade. “Hi, Sophia. It's been ages, and hello???” Annabelle took two steps back, and another, her gaze trailing lower. “You look gorgeous.” Sophia and Annabelle used to be as close as sisters, and the latter was the closest to a sister that Sophia ever had. But they eventually lost contact when Annabelle left for school a few months before Sophia and Alex married. Due to how tight her calendar and schedule were at that time, Annabelle was unable to attend the wedding. She was studying a five-year course in law at Cambridge, and by the time she first returned for holidays, Sophia was already gone. Alex never spoke about what happened, and the family learned quickly not to ask. “You too,” Sophia said, taking in Annabelle's appearance. She'd grown into herself. She looked taller wi

  • Is Mr. CEO Our Daddy? Ex-Husband Returns As My Patient   103. Old Patriarch

When Alex had mentioned the family dinner, Sophia expected it to be a small gathering with simply his grandfather, mother, and father, along with his siblings and then him. She hadn't been expecting a huge gathering where all the Carters she knew were in one place. The car stopped in the driveway, and the boulder-sized lump in her throat didn't give her the chance to look around the place. They needn't step out of the car before she sees them—all of them. Uncle Charles was present, along with Alex’s aunt, whom, honestly, Sophia had met only a handful of times. Along with Alex's cousins. Everyone was present. If there was anything that appeased her, it was the sight of kids running around the garden where the dinner table had been set. They were having dinner outside, by the garden… and the setup was beautiful. She could immediately tell from the moment Alex opened the door for her and held her hands in his, helping her step out of the car. Sophia bit down on her bottom lip, and

  • Is Mr. CEO Our Daddy? Ex-Husband Returns As My Patient   102. Nervous

“Can you help me with my necklace?” Sophia stood in front of the mirror, and her gaze darted to Alex, who just stepped into the room, fixing his cufflinks. “Sure,” he said, walking over to her. She handed the jewelry to him and turned around to face the mirror, keeping her gaze on him as she swept her hair up. As soon as he was done with the necklace, Alex took a step back, his eyes trailing over her to admire the cream-colored dress she wore. “Do you think this dress is okay?” She asked him softly, “I don’t want to wear something too shouty, and I feel like the color of the dress is a bit bright. Should I wear something darker?” She heaved a breath. “This is the third time I’m changing my dress. I don’t know what to wear at all. Or maybe—” She turned around, heading towards her closet, but before she could take two steps away from him, his arms wrapped around her waist, pulling her back to stand in front of the mirror. “You’re on edge,” he murmured, drawing her closer as he le

“Come with me tonight,” he mumbled against her lips. “Please.” She nodded slowly, her fingers curling into the fabric of his shirt. “Okay.” “Okay?” Alex looked surprised that she agreed. He simply wanted to ask her again, and if she had said no, he wouldn't have forced her to come with him. He just wouldn't go either. “Yes.” She pulled back just enough to meet his eyes. “I'll come with you. And the kids too.” The smile that spread across his face was worth every bit of anxiety churning in her stomach. He kissed her again. “Thank you,” he murmured. Sophia's fingers brushed something on his wrist, and her brows pulled into a tight frown. She glanced down to see what it was, and her eyes widened subtly. She checked her own wrist, pushing her scrunchie away, and to her utmost surprise, her hair tie wasn't there. Because it was now on Alex’s wrist. “My God, that's my hair tie. When did you even take it out?” Alex chuckled at her reaction. “It’s mine now.” She didn't g

Sophia’s eyes dropped the slightest; she looked like she’d rather be doing anything else than having this conversation.
