I felt dizzy as I prayed to every saint that I knew, begging for the test to turn out negative. My hands trembled while I stood inside the cramped bathroom of our apartment with its light still flickering, and panic swirling in my chest. I could practically hear how loud my heartbeat was—each thump felt like it echoed off through the small space.
Please be negative. Please be negative. Please be negative. It had been several minutes since I took the test and yet, I still couldn’t bear to bring myself to look at the result. I just graduated from university and just started settling at work. I am barely managing to keep myself alive, let alone eat proper meals everyday. How could I possibly handle anything more? I shook out my hands and tried to steady my breathing. I calmly reminded myself that my period had been late before too. That maybe I might have been just overreacting. But this time… it just felt different. Probably because I knew that there had been that one night a few weeks ago. And something like this wasn’t able to happen. After taking one final deep breath, I picked up the pregnancy test that had been sitting on the sink. I then slowly opened my eyes, bracing myself, then slowly removed my finger from the test. Two lines. The test revealed as I completely removed my finger from it. The world seemed to stop as I was stunned. The weight dropped onto my shoulders so heavily that I nearly lost consciousness at the time. “You are taking so long!” Amara, my roommate, complained as she burst inside the bathroom without a warning. She shot me a confused look before grabbing the test from my hand. “Let me see!” Amara’s face, originally from a confused look, instantly drained of color. Her mouth then formed a bit ‘O’. ”You… You’re pregnant!” she shrieked. I buried my hands in my hair. I had seen the results earlier, but hearing it come out from someone’s mouth loudly made it so much real. Of course, a mistake that occurred without protection or anything comes with consequences. And now, here I was, facing one. Suddenly, flashbacks of signs that I should’ve noticed before hit me all at once—how I had become easily irritable, how the perfume that I loved so much before since I was fifteen suddenly made me gag, how Amara’s cooking doesn't feel appetizing anymore, and how my seatmate in work annoyed me more than usual. “Hey? Vera?” Amara waved a hand in front of my face. “Are you okay?” “I-I don’t think so…” I stuttered. Amara’s expression softened as she held one of my shoulders gently and caressed my face. “Look, Vera, you are pregnant,” she said softly. What are you going to do about this?” Right. What am I going to do about this? I could barely able to take care of myself, let alone bring someone in this world and take good care of it. I do not know if I’ll be a good mother— especially when I never had one growing up. Bills, responsibilities, childcare, everything… felt horrendous. Yes, I have a job now, but I needed more time, more stability. And what about the child’s father? I do not want this child to grow up with an incomplete family. “I don’t know,” I whispered. “What do you mean you don’t know?” Amara raised an eyebrow. “Its just… way too early for me,” I said, voice shaky and about to crack. “And I wouldn't want this child to grow up without a father figure.” “Is Chase the father? Your ex?” Amara asked, “Did both of you hook up again?!” I immediately jumped up and said, “No!” “Then who’s the father?” “Well…” How could I easily say to Amara that the father of this child that I am currently carrying is none other than the CEO of our company—someone I’d barely interacted with. The meeting finally ended. So apparently, he visited not to hire a secretary—but to lay out the new project and assign roles.I still remember how the atmosphere shifted the moment he walked in. His cold and fierce demeanor thinned out the oxygen and shrank the room. Leviticus Foster didn’t need to raise his voice—his presence alone was enough to pin everyone in place. But during the entire meeting, I couldn’t help but be bothered feeling his gaze on me. As if he was checking something.Every time I feel those gray eyes of his sweep my direction, I could feel the heat crawling up my neck and my palms sweating. Which is why a sigh of relief fell upon me once the meeting ended.“The CEO is so handsome and scary at the same time, isn’t he?” Erica suddenly popped up beside me. I nearly jumped out of my skin.“Oh my god, Erica!” I clutched my chest. “Can you stop popping out of nowhere?”Erica stifled a laugh and smirk, locking her elbows with mine. “Come on. Be honest. He’s handsome and
Erica kept talking, but my mind was just drifting all over the place except the present. Her words blurred into noise—as if someone’s flipping book pages too fast to catch“... oh right, by the way,” Erica casually dropped the bomb, snapping me back, “the CEO’s visiting this department later.”My soul left my body. I stared at her in raw horror. Perfect. Just perfect. As if running into him in the elevator wasn’t enough for one morning, and now he’s coming here. To our department. To the same floor. Inhaling the same oxygen I breathe. Is the universe punishing me for what happened that night? If so, then I fully repent all my sins!“Really!” I blurted far too loudly. Erica clamped her hand over my mouth as some of our officemates were starting to turn to look at us. We silently bowed our heads and whispered sorry.“Vera, calm down,” she whispered, stifling a laugh. “Yes. I heard our manager say so.”“For what?” I asked, my voice thin, my stomach twisting itself into knots.“Oh, I beli
The moment I opened my eyes, a wave of nausea hit me. Great. Morning sickness.I barely made it to the bathroom before I threw up. My head throbbed—part pregnancy, part emotional exhaustion. After rinsing my mouth and splashing cold water onto my face, I brushed my teeth. When I finally stepped out, I forced myself into my work clothes. After doing so, I immediately went to the kitchen to check for food or at least something to eat.On the table sat a plate with a neatly toasted bread and a perfectly cooked egg with avocados. Beside it was a note written with a pen.Cooked your favorite toasted bread with egg. I made sure it was well done. Xoxo.My chest softened just a little.I sat down and took a careful bite. Surprisingly, my stomach didn’t protest. At least there was something my body could tolerate. Lately, almost everything Amara cooked triggered my nausea. My hand then drifted to my stomach without thinking. My eyes moved toward the full-body mirror across the room.In nine m
“You what?!” Amara exclaimed, slamming her palms on the table so hard that the vase almost fell.I winced. We had moved from the bathroom to our tiny kitchen just to talk properly, and honestly, I couldn’t blame her for losing it after hearing the story. I had finally told her what happened a few weeks ago—what I remembered of it—and who probably the father was.“Amara, please,” I urged her, lowering my voice. “Calm down, will you? It’s late. The neighbors might hear us—”“I don’t care if it’s eleven in the evening or three in the morning!” she snapped, her voice dropping only slightly. “You’re telling me you got drunk at a company event and did it with— with—”She buried her hands in her head, unable to finish the sentence.“It was a mistake!” I whispered, instinctively playing with my fingers.“A mistake?!” She stared at me like someone had personally offended her. “Girl, that did not sound like a mistake at all. It sounded like you were desperate for it just to forget that boy best
In the hallway, I felt steps following me. A hand reached and grabbed my wrist–it was Theo. Tears had started forming in my eyes, but I forced myself to keep my calm composure.“Hey… are you okay?” he asked, concern etched throughout on his face.“Yes, I am!” I replied, forcing a steady and joyous tone.“Sorry, for not telling you earlier,” Theo said quietly, almost a whisper.“Why are you saying sorry?” I asked, trying to sound casual.“Because you looked so hurt.” he admitted. “I know we had hooked up a few times before, but… that was it, okay?”I froze. Wow… this man. His words hit me like a punch to the gut. It felt like he was dumping me right there, right now. The urge to cry suddenly surged stronger, and I could no longer bear it. I gently pulled my wrist away from his hand.“Hurt? No… I am really happy for you,” I said, forcing a smile. “And oh please, I had always seen you as a friend.”Theo opened his mouth and was about to respond, but I quickly cut him off.“I really need
I looked at the night city lights, breathing in the fresh air from the balcony. The music inside and the sheer number of people attending the company’s party overwhelmed me, which is why I went outside. I took a sip from the glass of champagne I was holding as I leaned on the railing. The lights from the city amazed me. December had just begun, yet I could already see the Christmas lights and decorations hanging even in the distance. We were many floors up, but I could still hear the bustling sounds of the night market not far away from the building where the party was being held. The cold breeze touched my bare skin, and I shivered, closing my eyes. I was wearing a long yellow-silk gown that shimmered like a moonlight, hugging my figure. Its soft, lightweight material gently kissed my skin. The gown’s cowl neckline draped gently over my collarbones, while the deep open back made me feel the night’s chill.Lost in thought, I barely noticed the door opening behind me, revealing my co-
