Zerah

I opened my eyes to soft light pouring in through the sheer curtains, the distant sound of birds chirping breaking through the morning silence. For a second, I forgot where I was. The room was too big, too polished. Then I heard the twins’ voices from across the suite, and everything came rushing back—Ryker’s mansion, the fight, Alice collapsing.

A few minutes later, I heard their sleepy chatter.

“Mommy?” Micah mumbled, rubbing his eyes.

“Time to get up, sweethearts,” I said, swinging my legs over the side of the bed.

I sat up slowly and rubbed my eyes.

“Mama!” Ryan called out. “Micah won’t let me wear the red socks!”

“They’re mine!” Micah argued from the other side.

I sighed and slipped out of bed. “Okay, okay, enough. You two are going to make me grow grey hairs before my time.”

They giggled as I knelt between them and helped them both with their uniforms. I tried to keep things cheerful as I brushed Ryan’s hair and fixed Micah’s shirt collar, but my mind kept dri

Zerah The sun peeked in through the curtains, brushing soft gold across the floor. I opened my eyes slowly, my body heavy, like it had soaked up all the tension from last night and refused to let it go. I sat up and rubbed my hands over my face. The dinner. The way the Falloway family had talked to me like I wasn’t even human. The way Nathan just sat there, stuck between defending me and listening to his mother. But at least HE had defended me, hadn’t he? I stood and walked over to the mirror, picking up my brush. My hair was a mess. I started brushing it out slowly, watching my reflection. Nathan didn’t have to say anything. After finding out my true identity, that the same person he worked with for the past few years was the same contract wife he'd spoken about, he must have felt betrayed. He could have stayed quiet like Ryker did. But he didn’t. He spoke up. That had to mean something… right? Maybe he still believed in me. I pushed the thought aside and changed into my wor

Zerah I should’ve known dinner was going to be a disaster the moment we stepped into the house. The Falloway estate was the kind of place where people wore designer grief and smiled with judgment tucked behind pearl necklaces. The dining room looked like something out of a luxury lifestyle magazine—long polished table, golden cutlery, crystal glasses, and a chandelier so unnecessarily big it could crush someone and still be considered tasteful. And there I was, sitting between Ryker and an empty chair, hands folded tightly in my lap, trying to act like my lungs weren’t collapsing with every second that passed. Nathan sat opposite me. He kept stealing glances when he thought I wasn’t looking. His expression was unreadable—curious, confused, almost as if he were trying to decide whether or not I was the same girl from all those years ago. I didn’t blame him. I probably wasn’t. Not fully. “So, Zerah,” Mrs. Falloway said, slicing into her salmon with a little too much grace to be ca

Zerah I stared blankly at my monitor, the screen glowing with half-typed figures and forgotten emails. But I couldn’t focus—not after what Nathan had just told me. Ryker had told his family. Without asking me. Without warning. My hands trembled slightly as I picked up my coffee cup, only to realize it had long gone cold. Nathan hadn’t looked at me the same after our conversation, and I could feel the shift—subtle, but growing. He was going to find out eventually. And then what? Would he start treating me like some homewrecker? Like the villain in the story Ryker had painted? I didn’t realize I was gripping the edge of my desk until my fingers started to ache. How DARE he. How dare Ryker throw me under the bus like this? I stood up suddenly, the legs of my chair scraping against the floor with a screech. A few heads turned, but I didn’t care. I walked out of the room with quick strides, heading down the hall toward the executive offices. Ryker’s assistant looked up as I approa

Zerah The hallway felt colder than I remembered. My footsteps echoed against the marble, and my chest tightened with each step I took. Everything about this place screamed distance — from the spotless floors to the quiet staff who avoided eye contact. It wasn’t a home. It was a fortress. One that didn’t want me in it. I found myself in the garden, drawn by the moonlight spilling across the hedges. The wind was gentle, brushing my skin like a whisper, and still, I felt suffocated. “Are you alright, ma’am?” a soft voice asked. I turned and saw one of the younger maids standing by the doorway, her face full of concern. “I’m fine, thank you,” I said, forcing a smile I didn’t feel. She nodded and stepped back inside. Alone again. I wrapped my arms around myself and sank onto the nearest stone bench, burying my face in my hands. “What am I even doing here?” I whispered to the night. “What was I thinking?” My phone buzzed in my pocket, and for a second, I hoped it was my mother. But

Zerah My heart slammed against my ribs as Alice’s body lay limp at my feet. I knelt beside her, pressing my hands against her shoulders, shaking her gently. “Alice! Wake up!” I pleaded. “Please!” "Alice!" I screamed again, shaking her lightly, panic rising in my throat like bile. She wasn’t moving, her eyes shut, her body completely still. My hands trembled as I placed two fingers on her neck, searching desperately for a pulse. I found it—faint, but there. "Please, wake up," I whispered, my voice cracking. I didn’t even like her, not really. But this wasn’t about like or dislike anymore—this was about life, about something horrible unfolding right in front of me and feeling absolutely helpless. I turned to look toward the house, unsure of what to do next, when heavy footsteps pounded across the pavement. A dark figure appeared from the shadows of the mansion’s side entrance—broad shoulders, jaw clenched tight, eyes scanning the scene before locking on Alice. Ryker. His expressi
