Chapter 28: The Search

The following morning, I came downstairs to fix breakfast. I headed to the kitchen, then I saw that breakfast was already served. I opened the dish. The aroma that escaped from it filled my nose. Who could have fixed breakfast this early? Was it Ginevra? I bet not. Then I heard footsteps behind me. I swiveled my head and saw Emiliano. I faced him.

“Good morning, sir,” I greeted, looking everywhere but his eyes.

“I’m off to work. Take care of my wife,” he said huskily. He turned to leave then stopped and faced me again, lifting his finger with his car keys at me. “If I discover a scratch on her, I will kill you,” he groaned and left.

“If I discover a scratch on her, I will kill you,” I mimicked in a baby’s tone. “I faced the dish, closing it back. I left my hand on the table and looked at the door that he just walked out of. “What if I discover a scratch on her and kill you?” I said to myself. “Nonsense,” I hissed and headed back upstairs.
