RAINA’S POV

“If it comes to it, Raina, yes, I’ll give it up.” Valen raised a hand to my cheek, brushing his thumb across my skin.

“You can’t give up your birthright,” I disagreed strongly, shaking my head. “You’re the king that the realm needs. You have done a lot for this pack and the alphas. They’d be foolish to replace you. Coming at you would give Dymian every opening he would need to destroy us. Valen, please.”

“Not if it’s asking me to abandon everything that matters to me,” he said, low

RAINA’S POV“It’s his cursed blade!” Penn shouted, releasing a yellow burst of magic that sent Vaheed flying off me, and whatever pierced me went along with him.“Pahahaha!” Farrah laughed in sick delight before she vanished from the ground.A strangled cry tore from my throat, and my arms gave out. I collapsed sideways, unable to hold myself up as the searing pain consumed my body, my blood squirting out in quantities.Valen’s arms caught me before I hit the rutted ground. His knees slammed down on the trampled grass as he pulled me against his chest, positioning me in his lap with one hand bracing my back, the other pressing on the wound below my breast.“Don’t let him get away!” Devin bellowed.I heard their rapid footsteps drumming across the field as they took off after the man who stabbed me.“Shit, he teleported!” Jason yelled, with a disgruntled edge in his voice.“Farrah is gone too,” Theo snarled, angry at their failure. “We almost had them.”“Follow his trail!” Valen barked

VALEN’S POV“You’ve got to be kidding me! The fight of a lifetime, and I’m stuck watching from the sidelines?” Theo threw his hands up, his face twisted in frustration, his disappointed expression pleading with me.I shifted my eyes, hardening them at the Worgens, my voice low and warning, as I stood my ground. “Off the field, Gamma, or I’ll deal with you myself.”So furcans and wolves cleared the field and stood to the side, waiting anxiously for the most epic battle in werewolf history.“Farrah, we’re twins,” Figaro began, and I cocked up my brow. “I know you better than anyone here, and this isn’t you. Come with me before Selene makes you pay for what you’ve done.” He lowered his weapon slightly, searching her face for any sign of the sister he knew.“You should be worried about yourself, brother. When Dymian wins this war, Selene will be the one begging for mercy.” Farrah raised her fan blade, curling her lips into a confident smile.“It is sad that you love him that much.” Figaro

VALEN’S POVThe furcan wolves’ eyes darted left and right. They exchanged glances among themselves, with evident hesitations flickering across their faces. Some shifted to human flesh, deliberating hard.“Can we really be free?” a blonde-haired one grumbled, looking nervously at Raina. “What if Selene punishes us for going against her vessel?”“Maybe we should try,” another ringed-nose one muttered, swallowing hard. “If we can really choose for ourselves.”A burly bald-headed furcan stepped forward, his hands trembling at his sides. “Nnnnn-no!” he strained, then let out a startled laugh. “No!” His black eyes widened as he looked around. “We can defy them!”“No!” another shouted, grinning at his own words.“No! No! NO!” More furcans burst into a chant, their voices rising across the battlefield.I watched them warily. The furcan army had just discovered their own sense of self.“What the hell is this?” Came from Seth, glancing around in annoyance as he realized the giant shift in their

VALEN’S POVZeus’ monstrous black form lunged for the thick white mane at Dymian’s savage blue-black wolf’s throat.Dymian twisted, snapping his jaws shut inches from Zeus’ muzzle. Our two beasts slammed together with a bone-rattling force. Our silver and gold claws gouged the earth, fangs flashing as we fought with murderous fury, snapping our jaws inches from each other's necks. Then that scream pulled at my soul.“It’s Raina,” I blurted.Frantic, Zeus swirled around. He snapped his entire focus into finding her.Our eyes narrowed in horror at the ring of furcans closing in on her. Not just her, but all of us were up to our necks with ashy-black furcans.“Something is happening to her,” Zeus prodded with dread. She was in danger. Gustav, Androkles, and Figaro were viciously occupied several feet away with Seth, Rovell, Farrah, and Jarvaldo. My mind raced with fear for Raina. I’ve got to get to her. Her life being threatened made me forget about who I had been fighting, until sharp cl

VALEN’S POVTheo rolled his shoulders and raised his guns. A devious grin tugged at his mouth. “Let’s braise some beasts and fry these furcans.”“Bump-itty-bomp!” Jason whooped, raising his arm high as Theo and Thaines lifted theirs to bump forearms with his, completing their little warrior ritual.I stepped into position beside Raina, fixing my gaze on the approaching army in the distance. Theo, Thaines, Devin, Penn, Gustav, Figaro, Androkles, and Jason lined up beside us at the front. Weapons in our hands flashed in the sunlight. At this time, Dad was giving his final battle speech.“Stand your ground! Fight for the ones beside you and the ones waiting for you at home. Let your howls rattle their bones, and your claws remind them who they’re up against.” Dad’s grim, searing words echoed through the pack-link, getting our adrenaline pumping. “Let them come. We are wolves. We were born to fight, bred to protect, and bound by a loyalty no enemy can break. We are a pack, and we do not k

VALEN’S POVRaina had been watching me and Snow. Gods, there was no doubt. She saw all of it.Her expression was unreadable. What was she thinking? I couldn’t tell. She placed a hand on her stomach, and my worries revved.Remembering instantly all the stomach pain she used to get whenever I was around Jiya, I swiftly moved towards her. After three long strides, I stopped. The way she recoiled halted me, and I stared at the niggling space between us.Always keeping this gap between us scorched my heart like a burning cigar tip pressing down on it.Silence ensued, because I had tuned everything out.Like a dumbo, I panicked and began to explain, “It’s not what it looks like. She was trying to help our wolves.”"It's my mistake,” Raina blurted awkwardly. “You were rather occupied. I shouldn't have interrupted." She smiled apologetically, apparently unbothered. “It’s good that you have her.”“I don’t have anyone.” Slipped out of my mouth, rigid in my belief. My forehead puckered with worr
