After Oisin had seemingly laughed at me for no reason, I grew a distaste for his presence. I wasn’t exactly keen on being insulted by a thirteen year old bird because of some animals.Besides, unlike the animals, what ever their names might have been , wolves had their pride and we would never allow ourselves to be subjugated like that and become someone’s pet.So I walked away from Oisin and the strange boy, Roman. I went back to the tree line and rested against a tree there. It was already getting late and the sun was about to set so I knew that Phoenix would soon com e out of the cave. He seemed like one to keep to time. After a while, Rowena came back with the huge bear at her heels. She was patting it’s head. My reaction to the creature wasn’t very pleasant, especially when it turned it’s gaze to me. No matter what they told me, I would always find it hard to believe that the bear hadn’t been about to kill me before Rowena had called him off.We all waited outside for a few more
I stopped myself from recalling more of the past because the moment after that had been too painful to bear. My father had successfully repelled the hunter attack, in fact he was the first alpha to do so, but there was no joy in his eyes that day after he learnt of the price he had paid.I rested against a tree in the forest. My reaction to what Phoenix told me had probably been too strong, I knew it but I could hardly help it. It was difficult enough staying around him when I knew fully well that he was a hunter. The same race and group of people that my father had sworn revenge on as his madness over took him.But when Phoenix had told me that he was the son of their leader, of their Alpha, I just couldn’t take it. That meant that it had been his father who orchestrated all those attacks. It was his father who killed my mother.I was alone in the woods so I was able to calm down my rage before I shifted and did things I would hate myself for later. It has truly been lucky that Phoen
At first I was happy to see that my mother had won the fight that seemed to have threatened her so much. But even after killing the ,an, she didn’t move for a few seconds. My eyes turned in panic to the other hunters who were now running towards us to close the distance as quickly as possible.I ran to my mother. I put my hand on her white blood stained hide.“Mother, they’re coming! We have to leave!” I said as I shook her.But when she turned towards me, I finally saw the bleeding hole. She had been shot in her neck. Her eyes where no longer ferocious as she turned to face me. And I knew that she didn’t relish the killing as a part of me had.I had not yet awakened my wolf so I wasn’t sure if it had something to do with my wolf. Why else would the sight of blood have fascinated me like that?My mother nudged me in the direction of the forest with her head. And I already knew what she was trying to tell me.Run.There were already tears in my eyes at that point.“aren’t you coming wi
My mother shifted into a great and beautiful white wolf. She was by far the biggest wolf I had ever seen, except for my father. But I noticed that many patches of white fur was missing from her coat. Instead there was red and bruised skin visible in many spots. But the burned area had seemed to shrink overall. It may have had something to do with her great size. But in her wolf form she seemed to be able to ignore the wounds.Or at least that was what I thought before I saw that there was a huge burnt patch on one of her legs and she was very visibly shifting her weight away from that leg so that she could stand better on her remaining three legs.At the sight of her wolf, the hunters seemed to finally become serious and their stances straightened. But before they could make a move towards her, my mother leaped towards them. She closed a distance of twenty feet in a mere instant. And she landed on the leader who had been talking about all the wolves she had killed.I stood frozen to m
“Morning dear, don’t be scared. Remember that you’re my brave little wolf.”In that moment of pain and fear, my mother was like a holy being from the heavens. Sent by the Moon goddess, specifically to rescue me from my plight.I found that the tears that had evaded me at my juvenile realization of the true meaning of death finally came in full force. My tears flowed freely and I hugged tightly to my mother’s waist. Her gaze turned back to the fire she had just leaped over. The wall of flames had grown even higher as the wood burned more readily. I noticed that she had sustained a few burns on her body from when she had leaped over it earlier. And now it was far worse. But I wasn’t worried because I knew my mother would always find a way to solve every problem that I could bring towards her. That was the way it had always been. And of course this was just another problem that I had caused so she would be able to solve it easily.“Morning dear, we are going to get out of here and we are
I whirled back immediately.Morning had been walking behind the group, and she had been distracted, most likely because of me and what happened back in the cave. This seemed to have given ample opportunity to the invocate who was now holding a silver dagger to her throat. The dagger was pressed hard against her neck and I saw that she had screamed at the pain in her neck, which was visibly burning under the dagger.Anger clouded my eyes as I reached for my sword. How dare they threaten Morning like that?“Don’t move, or this wolf gets it!” The invocate shouted. He tried to sound fierce, but I noticed the crack in his voice. Orlaith had turned back to see the man who had dared sneak up from behind him.The invocate was young, and I knew he was barely higher than an acolyte. He must have been a star student to get into the field at sixteen. His eyes darted to the sides of us.My hand had frozen over my sword at his threat, but as soon as I saw his fearful eyes I knew that he was only me
