I woke up at 9 p.m. to find Kiran standing in my doorway, looking at me. He didn’t say anything as he turned around and walked out of my room. I got up and followed him downstairs. I knew I had some explaining to do. I switched my emotions off because I knew he would be looking. He was busy pouring Scotch into two glasses at the kitchen table and I sat down opposite him.

“Saga told us,” he said and I knew instantly that he was referring to Chrissie, the dead girl.

“Okay,” I said, not really caring that she told them.

“I asked you and you kept quiet,” he said. He was angry but he was still in control of his anger. It meant he was giving me a chance to explain myself.

“You said to stand on my own two feet and that’s what I did. I handled everything else,” I said as he put the glass down in front of me.

“Talk to me, Kai,” he said gently and I wished that I could. I truly wanted to tell him everything. I wanted to confide my sins in him and have him tell me that everything would be okay.

Kiran wallowed in his own misery for days. Adara ignored every attempt he made for contact, and she didn’t even read his text messages anymore. He hadn’t even tried contacting Kai, because the truth had been staring him right in the face, but Death’s revelations had made him blind. Perhaps it had been his own anger that had blinded him.It wasn’t always easy to ask for forgiveness, and hindsight was always 20/20. Taking time out from his busy schedule to reflect on his life had made him see the truth. Kai really had no choice. He’d never been afraid to take action, and he knew where he had to start. His house was empty, and he planned to rectify that.Kiran knocked on William’s front door exactly eight days later, and he listened to the footfalls on the stairs. He took a deep breath and leaned on the railing of the porch, his back to the door, when William finally opened it.“Kiran,” William greeted him.“I’d like to speak to Saga, please,” Kiran said, as he turned around to face Will

“Where’s Kai?” he asked him, and stopped. “What happened to you?” James took in the state of the kitchen and dining area and the blood on Kiran’s face and hands.“Kai’s not here. He’s probably on his way back to Fresno. Why?” Kiran asked him.“Because he took Kari with him,” James said.“Shit,” Kiran said, and sat down at the counter, resting his elbows there, and cradling his face in his hands.“What happened here?”“Me and Kai happened. We had a falling out, and he left,” Kiran said, and Death laughed loudly.“Liar, liar,” Death whispered in his ear.“This looks like more than just a falling out, Kiran. Did Kai do this to you?” James asked, and Kiran nodded.“He gave as good as he got,” Kiran said, and sighed.“I don’t know what the hell is going on in your house, Kiran, but I want my daughter home. She’s 17! Kai had no right to ask her to go with him,” James said.“James, I can’t do anything about that. She went with him willingly, and you know that. I lost my whole family today. D

It was hours later when Malachi opened the door to Kiran’s study. He was sitting on the couch, still covered in his and Kai’s blood, the stark reminder from their fight earlier. He hadn’t bothered cleaning himself up, he felt too dismayed to do it.“What the hell happened today?” Malachi asked him, and sat down on the couch opposite Kiran.“Did Adara call you?” Kiran asked him. He wasn’t in the mood for a speech, but he could see the concern in Malachi’s eyes.“No. She’s at my house,” Malachi said, and Kiran wiped his face with both hands.“I’m in so much shit with her, I don’t even think there’s room to maneuver,” Kiran said, honestly.“About what?” Malachi asked him, and Kiran sighed audibly.“Everything. The shitshow with Saga and William this morning, then with Kai,” Kiran said, and closed his eyes. “I don’t know what to do, Dad.” It had been a long time since he’d felt so helpless.“Leave Adara for tonight. Let her calm down, because at this point, I think she’s ready to ask Lev

I wiped the blood from my face and reset my broken nose back into place. I couldn’t even remember Kiran breaking it. I got to my feet and surveyed the damage around me. Everything seemed to be in chaos, and it had happened so fast that it felt like whiplash.“Kai,” Adara said, softly.“I’m sorry, Mom, but he’s a hypocrite,” I said, and walked past her to the stairs and up to my room.I grabbed the empty duffel bag and started packing my clothes. I pulled my credit card from my wallet and placed it on my desk. I didn’t need him or his money. I stuffed as much clothes into the duffel bag as I could fit in it and turned around to leave.Adara stood in my doorway and she was crying. I put the bag down on my bed and wrapped my arms around her. My hand went to her head, and she clung to me. I hated hurting my mother, but it was like I couldn’t stop myself from saying those words out loud.“I love you, Mom. I’ll call you from the road,” I said, and she put her hands against my chest.“Where

“You’re so amusing when you’re angry,” Death said to Kiran, as he sat in his chair behind his desk.Kiran turned away from the window and looked at Death. “Shit, not today; seriously, not today.”“Oh, but my timing is perfect, as usual,” Death said, and smiled at Kiran.“What do you want?” Kiran asked, exasperatedly. “It’s been three years.”Death intertwined his fingers together, and smirked. “Well, wouldn’t you say it’s been long enough?”“No, not really,” Kiran said, and Death laughed. His face morphed into a serious expression. “I just came to congratulate you.”“For what?” Kiran asked him.“I was so pleasantly surprised that you raised Kai to be just like you,” Death said.“What are you talking about?” Kiran asked, with a frown.“Kai’s been leaving me presents all over the place,” Death said, and grinned at Kiran.“Bullshit,” Kiran said. “He killed one boy while defending his sister.”“Oh, Kiran. How blind you are.” Death laughed. “Kai’s killed so many more people than you had at

William joined Saga in the shower and washed her back. It took only one glance before they were kissing again, and William had her pinned against the shower wall. His thrusts were rougher and deeper than the previous night, and his teeth grazed over her collarbone, a primal instinct making him want to claim her in every way possible. Her climax triggered his, and they stood chest to chest in the shower, her one leg still wrapped around him as they caught their breaths, and waited for their heart beats to return to normal. “I won’t leave you, Saga. I’ll never leave you.”William and Saga drove back to her house, and he gripped the steering wheel as he turned onto the dirt road. He wasn’t afraid to face the music, as Saga had said. They imprinted, and everything was different now. Levi’s truck pulled in behind him, and he shook his head as he climbed out.“What are you doing here, Dad?” William asked him.“Having your back,” Levi said, and followed them inside the house.Kiran sat at th
