LOGINMelinda’s POV
Behind me, the savage, guttural howling of rogues echoed through the trees, closing the distance with terrifying speed. A sharp thorn tore at my skin, but I couldn't stop. With every frantic stride I took, bright red blood dripped onto the dead, fallen leaves. I looked back and saw them closing in fast. I heard the sound of my own screams ripping through the trees and tried to run faster as the growls became louder. The rogues were catching up. I could hear them crashing through the undergrowth hunting and enjoying it. Tears blurred my vision and I wrapped my arms protectively around my stomach while running. Please just let my babies survive. A roar exploded behind me then I felt unbearable pain. Claws tore across my back and I screamed. My body slammed into the ground and I saw a pool of blood. There was so much blood but I tried to crawl away; I had to protect my stomach. I couldn’t lose consciousness. Suddenly a massive, terrifying shadow rushed toward me out of the dark. I never saw the face, only the shape, then everything went dark. "Ah!" I woke up screaming, my eyes snapping open. Bright, blinding sunlight flooded the unfamiliar room, stinging my eyes. For a second, the light disoriented me, but the memories of the forest returned in a brutal flash. Panic immediately took over my entire body. My breathing went shallow and ragged. Ignoring the sharp pain shooting through my limbs, my hands flew straight to my stomach, pressing down against the white cotton blanket. The sudden, frantic movement alerted someone sitting in the corner of the room. A chair scraped loudly against the floorboards, and a middle-aged woman dressed in a clean nurse’s uniform hurried to my bedside, a relieved smile breaking across her face. "Oh, thank goodness, you're awake," the nurse said, her voice soft and soothing. She reached out, gently placing a hand on my trembling shoulder. "Please, try to lie still. You've been through a horrific ordeal." "Where..." My voice was dry, I tried to push myself up, but my muscles refused to cooperate. "Where am I?" "You are safe," she assured me quickly, adjusting the pillows behind my head. "Our patrol warriors found you unconscious near the pack border. You were covered in wounds, bleeding heavily. They brought you straight to the clinic. You’ve been asleep for two whole days." I barely listened to her explanation. The pack border? Which pack? There was one thought screaming in my mind, My fingers dug into her sleeve. "My babies?" I whispered, my voice shaking so hard. "Please. My babies?" The nurse’s smile softened even more. She placed her warm hand over mine, squeezing it lightly. "Two of the babies are alive and healthy, Their heartbeats are strong and stable." My face instantly crumpled. The relief I should have felt was completely swallowed by a cold, paralyzing dread. My hands froze on my stomach. Two of the babies, she had said. I already knew what that meant. My wolf let out a broken, mourning howl deep inside my soul, curling into a tight ball of misery. "The third..." I choked out, a fresh wave of hot tears spilling "What about the third baby?" The nurse’s smile vanished completely. She hesitated, her eyes dropping to the floor for a brief, agonizing second before she looked back up at me with profound sorrow. "I am so sorry," she explained softly, her voice thick. "We did everything we could. But one of the babies... did not survive the trauma." A shattering sob ripped through my throat. I turned my head away from her, burying my face into the stiff pillow as I began crying quietly. I had miscarried one of my children. One of my babies was gone before I could even hold them, before I could know them, before I could hear their heartbeat. I pressed a trembling hand against my mouth trying to stay quiet and not to fall apart but the tears wouldn't stop. My shoulders shook violently. "I'm so sorry." She said. I laughed weakly through tears. Sorry never brought anyone back. I squeezed my eyes shut. "You must understand, Melinda," the nurse murmured gently, rubbing my arm to comfort me. "Everyone in this clinic was completely surprised that any of them survived the attack. The odds were heavily against you. Between the severe rogue injuries, the massive blood loss, and the immense physical strain that had already been placed on your body before you even arrived... it is a true miracle that the twins survived." She squeezed my hand one more time, "The twins are completely stable now. The danger to them has fully passed. You just need to rest and heal." I knew she was trying to comfort me but I couldn't answer her. The pain in my abdomen was nothing compared to the emptiness in my heart. "I will inform the Alpha that you are finally awake," the nurse said quietly, stepping back from the bed. "He has been waiting for an update." Alpha? This wasn't Blackwood. I knew that much. Everything looked different and the scent of this place was different. The energy felt different. The nurse noticed my confusion. "You can ask him questions later." The door clicked shut behind her, and I carefully moved my trembling palm until it rested flat over my stomach. The tears continued to slide down my face, soaking into the white sheets. I closed my eyes, and the image of Kael’s furious face standing over me flashed behind my eyelids. I remembered his brutal command forcing me to my knees, draining my life force to save his mistress. "If you hadn't hurt us..." I sobbed, gripping the blanket tightly "If you had just believed me for one second... our baby would still be here." He had protected a lie, and the cost of his protection was the life of our child. For a long moment, I cried quietly. Then the door opened. I snapped my eyes open, not knowing what to expect. A powerful stranger stepped into the room. He was tall, with a dominant, suffocating alpha aura that instantly filled the air in the room. His sharp, calculating eyes locked onto mine, sending a sudden shiver straight down my spine.Carl’s POV"...and then I told her that the color would look terrible in the nursery.""Mhm."Ashley smiled."And she actually got offended.""Mhm.""So then I said if she's going to give advice, at least make it useful."Ashley’s voice was high-pitched, competing with the loud, chaotic rumble of the crowded market street. She had her arm looped tightly through mine, her fingers digging firmly into my forearm.Every few minutes, she would lean her head against my shoulder, shifting her soft wool coat to ensure everyone passing by got a clear view of her gently rounded stomach.I couldn't bring myself to care about whatever she was saying.“And look at this one." She held up a tiny blue outfit, I glanced at it."It's fine.""Fine?" She frowned."That's all you have to say?"I looked at the outfit again. "It looks warm."She stared at me, sighing d
Carl’s POV“Are you even listening to me, Carl?”The voice belonged to Ashley, but it sounded like it was coming from the bottom of a deep well.I blinked wondering if the trackers had found anything. She had been gone for days, and the woods were freezing at night. Was she warm? Was she eating? Did she have anyone helping her?“Carl!”I shifted my focus back to the room.Ashley sat to my right, her hand resting delicately over the slight swell of her stomach. She wore a soft, cream-colored knit dress that practically screamed innocent expectant mother.“Yes, Ashley. I’m listening,” I said, though my voice sounded hollow, even to my own ears.“You aren’t,” she pouted, her lower lip trembling.“I was saying that the midwife wants us in the clinic tomorrow morning at eight. And after that, the designer is bringing over the fabric samples for the nursery. I want your opinion on the velvet.A future heir deserves the absolute best, don't you think?”Across the table, my mother smiled warm
Melinda’s POV“No, absolutely not. Give that back I'm serious.""You two are impossible."I stood in the middle of my sitting room staring at the three grown men arguing over a stuffed wolf.Somehow they were treating it like the most important matter in the world."I bought it first," Eric argued.Julian folded his arms. "You bought the blue one, this one is silver.""Exactly blue is better, throw out the silver.”Three weeks ago, I would have never imagined this. My brothers, fighting over gifts for my unborn children. Now it had somehow become normal.Every day one of them appeared with another gift for the twins.Blankets, toys, clothes, books.I reached out to grab the cup of tea ignoring their banter.“Melinda, if you even think about lifting that teapot, I am going to have to restrain you to bed rest,"Jullian’s deep voice boomed across the room, completely cutting off my hand mid-reach.I shook my head as I drew my hand back to my lap."It’s ceramic, not an iron anvil. I think
Melinda’s POVThe courtyard of Silverthorn pack house was filled to the brim.Hundreds of pack members had gathered, chatting excitedly. No matter how many times I tried to tell myself everything would be fine, I couldn't stop imagining the worst. I couldn't breathe properly and my stomach twisted every few minutes. It was time for me to walk into the courtyard but my knees were shaking violently beneath the hem of a simple white dress they had given me.I was completely terrified. What if the mark stays dark?.If Vance and the others were wrong, I wouldn't just be a stray anymore I would lose the first real glimpse of a family I had ever known in my entire life."You look terrified." Vance’s deep voice murmured beside me."I am terrified.""Fair but don’t fear the crowd, Melinda," I smiled at him as he led me towards the middle of the courtyard.Suddenly, the murmurs died down. The doors swung open, and three tall, imposing figures stepped out. The entire place was filled with an ove
Melinda’s POVThe elders’ claim left me completely shaken. All my life I believed I was a nobody, an unwanted orphan left behind on the neutral pack lands. The possibility that I actually belonged to someone, that I had a family, felt utterly impossible.I couldn't stop thinking about it.I sat curled up near the window with a blanket wrapped around my shoulders waiting anxiously for the Beta.Inside, my hand rested protectively over my stomach. My babies kicked softly and the sensation made me smile but immediately afterward, I felt sad.My thoughts drifted somewhere I didn't want them to go.Kael. I squeezed my eyes shut wondering.Did he even know I was alive? Was he still sleeping in the Master suite with Selene, completely indifferent to the fact that I had fled into a blizzard?Or he didn’t even realize I was gone? The door opened drawing me out of my thoughts. Martha stepped inside, and right behind her was a tall, heavily built man with silver-streaked hair and a commanding pr
Melinda’s POVFive days had passed since I woke up in this strange pack. The cuts on my body were healing and the claw marks across my back no longer felt like they were on fire every time I moved. The bruises covering my ribs had faded from deep purple to yellow and the dizziness came less often now.Physically, I was recovering.Emotionally? Not even close.I sat near the large window of my room, staring out at the snow-covered training grounds below. My hand rested on my stomach. It seemed to stay there constantly these days, almost like I needed to reassure myself every few minutes that they’re still here, still alive and safe. The thought brought comfort and pain.Because every time I think about my babies...I remember the one I lost.I closed my eyes trying not to think about it but immediately another memory tried to surface.Kael.I pushed that away too.Lately that has become a habit.I forced myself to shut it down and focus on the babies, unfortunately, the two were utterly
