STEPHANIE
“I need those documents right now. And here’s the draft. Make the necessary changes and bring them back to me.” the HR said, sliding the file across the table to me.
“Sure.” I replied exhausted already.
It’s been a week since I joined this furniture company as the HR assistant and to be honest I had some inefficient subordinates. I was left under a lot of work pressure but I knew that I was going to make this work, I had to.
I leaned back in my seat to relieve my neck which hurt from sitting straight for hours. My phone rang only a second later. It was an unknown number. I waited for the person to speak first, something I have always done.
“Edward Dan on this side. Am I speaking to Ms. Smith?” The familiar, authoritative voice filled the brief silence. Edward Dan as in Anna’s father. I remembered that name but what I didn’t remember was any unfinished business that he could call me for.
“Speaking. How may I help you?” I heard some shuffling on the other side.
The reply came out rather quick and unhesitant. “I would like to see you at my office. Tomorrow.”
That’s it? He wasn’t even going to offer a reason behind the request he made that wasn’t even a request in the first place.
Figured I should just ask myself. “Can I know why?”
“No.”
I pulled the phone away from my ear and blinked at the audacity of this man.“Excuse me?” I chuckled, disbelievingly.
“I’m afraid that it’s a bit confidential to be discussed over a phone call.”
Why was I having the feeling that it wasn’t something good? “I’m getting a little apprehensive here. What is the matter?” I asked once more, hoping I would get something to feed my curiosity.
“I’ll tell you that once we meet.”
It was concerning that he didn’t even say that I needn’t worry. Then again the short interaction with him didn’t exactly put him forward as genial. I sighed in annoyance and tapped my right foot on the floor.
“Not tomorrow, I wanna meet today,” I demanded. A day’s wait seemed like too much work. I needed to sleep at night and my curiosity had reached a level where it wouldn’t allow me to.
“Well, that can be arranged.” He said after a second of deliberation. “I’ll send you my car.”
Yeah, thanks! My mother taught me better! I cannot risk getting kidnapped “I'll get a cab. Just send me the address.”
“When should I be expecting you?”
I glanced at my watch. “Does four sound good?” It's better, that's when I get an hour off.
“It does. Alright then.”
I hummed before hanging up. Pressing my lips together I regarded the shit ton of work I would have to complete if I were to leave for two hours and meet this Edward Dan.
I hurriedly finished my work and taking permission I got a cab and headed to his office. It was a skyscraper and I couldn't guess how many floors or what part was his organization. Or did he own everything? The Sign said Dan Realty. I was in awe of the luxury that fed my eyes and filled my nose. The abundance of staff around. If I wasn’t worried about the promised chat, I would have drooled over the expensive interiors. I sighted a receptionist and walked up to her.
“Excuse me. I am here to meet Edward Dan” The middle-aged lady in the reception looked up to give me a disinterested once-over. “Do you have an appointment?”
“I guess. Can you check in with him? He asked me to be here at four.” After directing a long assessing gaze at me, she nodded.
“Can I get your name?”
“Stephanie Smith.” Another nod. She spoke over the phone before hastily keeping it down.
“Mr. Dan is expecting you.” Thanking her, I took the elevator which stopped at the required floor with a ding. Since the moment I had set foot inside the building, my mind had been racing with all sorts of possibilities. I just wanted to get it over with. Had I done something wrong? Or was something wrong with Anna?
I knocked at the door to the CEO’s cabin and heard a gruff come in. There was that god-like man, seated behind his table, his eyes completely trained on his laptop screen. If I said he looked handsome that day, he looked devastating in formal clothing. The fitted navy suit did nothing to hide his defined biceps and muscular shoulder.
I could go for hours by just looking at him but that wasn’t why I was here in the first place.
“Ms. Smith.” He nodded curtly, looking up and gestured to take a seat without taking his eyes off my face. His unfaltering gaze had left me feeling conscious.
“What do you want to discuss?” I asked once I had taken a seat. He let his eyes linger for another few seconds before picking up a file from his desk and sliding it towards me.
I raised a brow in question. “What is this?”
“Read it.” He said. I didn’t like his attitude. He behaved as if he was the one signing my paychecks.
Without giving it much thought, I picked up the file and started reading through the pages and to say I was appalled was an understatement.
“I’m sorry, is this some kind of a joke? Because I’m not in the mood for it.” My mouth twisted into a humorless chuckle.
“Good thing. I don’t joke.” He lifted his shoulder in a casual shrug.
“You mean this is exactly what I think this is.” I slammed the file on the desk. His eyes followed my movement before they traveled back to my face.
“A marriage contract? Yes.” He calmly acknowledged contrasting the state of mind I was in.
This wasn’t even on the list of prospects that I had imagined could be the reasons for the meeting. “What does this mean?” I gritted through my teeth.
“This means that we are going to be married for two years and-“
“I can read.” I gritted the words out, stopping him in the middle of his unhelpful explanation. He spoke as if he was explaining his work schedule for the day and not a whole ass marriage!
“Good for you!” I could bet that he was trying to get a rise out of me with his infuriating remarks.
“Why in the world will I marry you!? I don't even know you” The way my voice still sounded composed surprised me.
“Because…..” He trailed off as if looking for suitable words. “I need you to.” He offered.
I stared at him unblinking. It took everything in me to not round the table and slap him across the face. Forcing a breath out, I stood up to leave.
“Wait! I’ll explain.” There was the slightest sense of urgency in his voice.
“Save it. I’ll leave.”
STEPHANIE Edward got home, still recuperating from his injury, I had to move back in to take care of him. He couldn't use his hand properly or his body to do any harsh activities. I needed to be by his side. Anna was so happy I returned, they had told her I went on a trip. She kept on asking what I got her and I had to ask Emma to go get her the latest doll she had always wanted. Emma wrapped it up and I gave it to her as a gift. As a workaholic that Edward was, staying home wasn't funny for him. He still tried to work from home but I always reminded him that he should rest just like the doctor had suggested. I met him slumped on the couch in our room watching sports news. He looked exhausted. I laughed “You look like you're about to die because they asked you to stay home and recover” “Trust me now I'm getting an experience of what you felt while staying home all through that period” I smiled and sat beside him. “Have you taken a shower?” “Not yet. I feel so lazy right now,” h
STEPHANIE “GET YOUR FUCKING HANDS OFF MY WIFE!!” Edwards' voice rumbled and thundered down the street, and immediately, Maison let go of me. “So you brought your husband huh?” He threw me a very dirty look. “I thought I had told you to come alone. Now you're really going to get it dirty when we get home” He dug his hand into his back pocket and brought out a dagger before lunging into Edward, and they struggled with who would hit whom. I wasn't expecting to see Edward. How did he know what was going on and came? For some reason, I'm glad he came, but for another, I'm not; what if he gets stabbed? They gave themselves an equal share of beatings until Maison cut Edward on the arm. I just screamed where I was. Edward was trying to hit the knife out of his hand but he proceeded to pierce him with the knife in his abdomen. I felt like fainting. Edward managed to hit the knife out of his hands and held him to the ground, it didn't take a second before Sam and his team came and grabbed
STEPHANIE I ignored my mother who had seen me and Edward outside. I walked upstairs avoiding her gaze. I was ashamed of myself and also angry. I had ruined Edwards' life. I locked my door, slumped on the floor, and cried more. Thinking about it, how could Edward even want me back after knowing I slept with another man? What kind of a lover was he? I've never seen someone love me this bad in my life. I needed to do something concerning all these. I cannot sit back and watch Maison soil Edwards's name. I don't mind dying because of this. I needed to make things right. I should save the one who loves me more than the way I love him. I thought about it for some days before concluding. I picked out my phone and called Maison hoping he would pick up. He did, and I said. “You wanted me right? Now you can have me” ‘What are you saying?’ He clearly was pleased with those words. “But please don't ruin Edwards's name, please, I beg you, Maison. You can have me as you want.”‘Is it now you
EDWARD Stephanie was wearing his clothes, looking haggard, she had slept over, did she just have sex with him? Her mom had told me that she had gone to see me yesterday. But I never saw her, I just guessed she would be here, and here she was, in another man's clothes. “What are you doing here?” I asked her. “What are you doing here?” She asked me back. “You have no right to be here” She began walking down the stairs. “I do, you're fucking just leaving a man's apartment”“Just the way you fucking left a woman's apartment before coming here to pretend to beg” She was angry. “What?” I didn't understand her statement. She laughed “Edward you're funny” “I don't understand” She walked up to me, and I could smell tobacco and earth on her, it was unusual. She always smelt fresh and flowery. “Let me tell you something, you and I are never getting back together. Never” Perhaps did she hear about me and Camille but no one would tell her. “You cannot say that” “Edward you cannot stand h
STEPHANIE Gabriel kissed me roughly as if he had been craving for my body just like I was craving for a body. His hands caressed every inch of my body. I didn't mind that he was all muddy and could stain my clothes, I wanted his hands all over me. He hit me against the wall. Getting rid of my shirt first. Sucking my neck and chest. I ran my fingers through his soft locks. I was dripping wet, I had forgotten my pain. I just imagined that I was doing everything with Edward. He placed me on a console, taking his shirt off. He studied me before leaning in to kiss me slowly. He carried me into his workroom, to his pottery station, and laid me on the muddy floor gently. I stared at him. “What are you doing?” He smirked. “Just relax” He began to take off my clothes, and soon I was naked before him. “You're a total work of art” I just watched him. He took off his clothes before walking towards a heap of mud. He grabbed a bowl of muddy water and poured some on himself. I was surprised,
STEPHANIE I was into the kiss, my hands travelling to Gabriel's neck, when I realised that this wasn't right. I quickly pulled away to his surprise. “I'm so sorry. I can't do this” I said, getting up. “I'm not even supposed to be here” What was wrong with me? How could I kiss someone whom it has not been a week since I met? I was married, I shouldn't appear cheap before Gabriel. “Stephanie,” he called me. I refused to turn for fear that what would happen next might be more intense. “Stephanie please wait” I turned around. “I'm really sorry” “It's not your fault. It is my fault. I don't know what's wrong with me” I ran my fingers through my hair. “I have feelings for someone else” Gabriel stared at me with concern in his eyes. “It's normal to feel something for someone and at the same time feel something for another” “That’s not true” “You shouldn't deny your heart what it wants and your body what it craves,” He said softly. “I don't know you, Gabriel. I can't say I feel someth
