Chapter 4 Too Late

Adrian stood in front of the sofa and stared at the small paper bag. His eyes were still red. His hands felt heavy. He reached out and picked it up.

The bag was light. He opened the top and looked inside.

Two tiny white shoes sat at the bottom. Soft leather. Little bows on the sides. They were no bigger than the palm of his hand.

Beneath the shoes was a folded card. He took it out carefully and opened it.

The words were written in Evelyn’s neat handwriting:

“Surprise! You’re going to be a daddy.”

Adrian went completely numb.

The office around him seemed to disappear. The city lights outside the windows faded. He read the note again. Then a third time. The meaning settled over him like cold water.

Evelyn had been pregnant.

She had come to his office that day to tell him. She had bought the shoes and written the note with hope. She had waited in his private office while he sat in a meeting. And he had handed her divorce papers. He had looked her in the eyes and told her he never loved her.

He set the shoes and the note on the desk with shaking hands. Then he grabbed his keys and ran.

The drive to their apartment took twelve minutes. He did not remember the traffic lights or the turns. He only remembered the need to reach her.

He unlocked the door and stepped inside.

The apartment was quiet. Too quiet.

“Evelyn?” he called.

No answer.

He walked through the living room. Her favorite blanket was missing from the sofa. He checked the bedroom. The closet door stood open. Half the hangers were empty. Her clothes were gone. Her suitcase was gone. On the kitchen counter sat a short note in her handwriting. She had left. She did not say where she was going.

He pulled out his phone and called her number. A recorded voice told him the number was no longer in service. He tried again. The same message played. He tried a third time. Nothing changed.

He called Claire at the office. His voice was tight. “Find out if she booked any tickets. Train. Plane. Bus. Anything. Do it now.”

Claire called back ten minutes later. Evelyn had booked a flight that left the city that morning. The plane was already in the air.

Adrian drove to the airport as fast as the roads allowed. He left the car in a no-parking zone and ran through the terminal. He pushed past people and ignored the stares. He reached the gate just minutes after the plane had taken off. He stood at the wide window and watched the sky. The plane was already a small shape in the distance. Then it was gone.

He returned to the apartment later that evening. He walked through the empty rooms again. Her photographs were gone from the walls. The small plants she had cared for were gone. Only his belongings remained. The place no longer felt like home.

That night he hired private investigators. He met them in his office and gave them every detail he had. Her full name. Her parents’ address in another state. The names of old friends. Bank records. Phone records. Credit card history. Anything that might lead to her.

The first week brought nothing useful.

The second week brought the same empty reports.

Weeks turned into months. The investigators checked every lead. They followed rumors in other cities. They watched train stations and bus terminals. They spoke to people who had once known her. No one had seen her. No one knew where she had gone. Her parents said they had not heard from her either.

Adrian kept working. He ran the company. He attended board meetings. He signed contracts and answered emails. But part of him stayed fixed on the search. Every evening he called the investigators for updates. Every evening the answer was the same. No news.

Months became a year.

Then another year.

He never stopped looking. He paid the investigators to keep searching long after most men would have given up. He checked every report himself. He drove to places where someone thought they had seen a woman who looked like her. Each time it was a false lead. A stranger with similar hair. A different face.

The tiny white shoes stayed on a shelf in his office. The note stayed folded beside them. Some nights, after everyone else had left the building, he took them down and held them. The shoes were still soft. The words on the card were still clear.

He had lost her. He had lost the child he never knew about. And no matter how many years passed, the search never stopped. But he never found her.

Five years later.I wake up early in my cozy apartment. Soft morning light slips through the curtains and falls across the bed. The air smells like coffee from the pot I set the night before. For a moment everything is quiet. Then a cheerful little voice calls from the doorway.“Mommy!”My five-year-old son Ethan climbs into the bed and throws his small arms around me. His hair is messy and his pajamas are twisted from sleep. He presses his warm face against my neck and giggles.“Good morning, my little bear,” I say. I pull him close and tickle his sides. He laughs so hard he almost rolls off the bed. I catch him and we both end up under the covers again, pretending the blankets are a fort. This is our morning routine. We make silly faces. We count the birds outside the window. He tells me about the dream he had where he could fly. I listen and smile and feel the deep, steady love that fills every corner of this small home. Ethan is my whole world. After a while he grows quiet. He re

Evelyn stood in front of the apartment door for a long time. The key still worked. She turned it slowly and stepped inside. The place smelled the same. Coffee and the faint scent of the soap Adrian always used. She closed the door behind her and leaned against it. Her chest felt tight. She had not planned to stay long. The living room looked empty even with all the furniture still there. Their pictures hung on the wall. One of them smiling on a beach. Another from their wedding day. Evelyn walked past them without stopping. She went straight to the bedroom. She pulled an old suitcase from the closet. It was the same one she had brought when she first moved in. She opened the drawers and took only her clothes. Shirts, jeans, a few dresses. Nothing that belonged to both of them. She folded everything carefully and placed it in the suitcase. Then she opened the top drawer of the nightstand on her side of the bed. Inside were a few photographs. One of her parents. One of her and her best

Adrian stood behind his desk and watched Evelyn’s face change. The folder shook slightly in her hands. He had not slept in three days. Every night he lay in the dark and stared at the ceiling. Every morning he rose with the same heavy weight pressing on his chest.Adrian had not slept in days. Dark circles sat under his eyes like bruises. His reflection in the office window looked like a stranger. The city lights outside the glass blurred together. He had been staring at the same stack of papers for hours. The divorce papers. His mother’s voice still rang in his head. She had called late last night, cold and sharp. If he did not end the marriage, she would destroy Evelyn’s father. Every account. Every deal. Every quiet loan the older man had taken to keep his small company alive. She would make sure nothing remained. His grandfather had spoken next. The old man did not raise his voice. He never needed to. If Adrian refused, control of the company would pass to someone else. Evelyn stepped out of the hospital doors and into the warm afternoon sun. A soft breeze touched her face. She paused on the steps and closed her eyes for a moment. A quiet smile spread across her lips. The doctor’s words still echoed in her mind. Six weeks pregnant. Healthy. Everything looked normal. She opened her eyes again and placed one hand gently over her stomach. There was nothing to feel yet, but she knew. A small life was growing inside her.She walked down the sidewalk with light steps. People passed by, but she barely noticed them. Her thoughts stayed on the news. After two years of marriage she and Adrian had almost stopped hoping. The quiet disappointment had settled between them for months. Now that weight was gone. Two blocks from the hospital she saw a small baby store. Soft blue and pink decorations filled the window. She pushed the door open. A gentle chime sounded above her head. The air inside smelled clean and new, like fresh cotton. She moved slowly along the she
