Evelyn stood in front of the apartment door for a long time. The key still worked. She turned it slowly and stepped inside. The place smelled the same. Coffee and the faint scent of the soap Adrian always used. She closed the door behind her and leaned against it. Her chest felt tight. She had not planned to stay long.

The living room looked empty even with all the furniture still there. Their pictures hung on the wall. One of them smiling on a beach. Another from their wedding day. Evelyn walked past them without stopping. She went straight to the bedroom.

She pulled an old suitcase from the closet. It was the same one she had brought when she first moved in. She opened the drawers and took only her clothes. Shirts, jeans, a few dresses. Nothing that belonged to both of them. She folded everything carefully and placed it in the suitcase. Then she opened the top drawer of the nightstand on her side of the bed. Inside were a few photographs. One of her parents. One of her and her best friend from college. And three small pictures of the ultrasound. She put those in her bag.

At the bottom of the drawer she found the baby shoes. They were soft and white with tiny blue ribbons. She had bought them last week. She had planned to give them to Adrian that same night. She held them for a moment. Her fingers traced the soft fabric. Then she placed them gently into the suitcase next to her clothes.

She sat on the edge of the bed and opened her purse. Inside was a small envelope. The surprise card. She had written it three days ago. The words were simple. “I have something to tell you. We are going to be parents.” She had drawn a little heart at the bottom. Evelyn stared at the card. Then she stood up, walked to the kitchen, and dropped it into the trash can. She did not look at it again.

Her phone buzzed. It was her best friend, Lena. Evelyn answered.

“Where are you?” Lena asked. Her voice sounded worried.

“At the apartment,” Evelyn said. “Packing.”

“I’m coming over.”

“You don’t have to.”

“I’m already on my way.”

Ten minutes later Lena walked in. She looked at the open suitcase and the empty drawers. She looked at Evelyn’s face.

“You’re really leaving,” Lena said.

Evelyn nodded.

Lena sat beside her on the bed. “You have to tell him about the baby.”

Evelyn shook her head. “No.”

“Evelyn, please. He has a right to know.”

“A man who can look into my eyes and say he never loved me does not deserve to know,” Evelyn said. Her voice stayed quiet but firm. “He looked right at me. He said the words like they cost him nothing. I will not give him this.”

Lena took her hand. “You’re hurting. I understand that. But this is not just about him. This is about the child.”

“The child will have me,” Evelyn said. “That is enough.”

Lena stayed quiet for a while. Then she helped fold the last of the clothes. She did not argue again. When the suitcase was full, Evelyn closed it. She looked around the room one last time. Nothing else belonged to her now.

In the bathroom she found her marriage certificate in a folder. She took it out and tore it slowly into small pieces. She threw the pieces into the same trash can where the card already lay. Then she sat at the kitchen table with a pen and a form she had printed earlier. She filled in the lines carefully. She wrote her maiden name. Evelyn Hart. Not Evelyn Cole. Not Mrs. Cole. Just Evelyn Hart again. She signed the form and put it in her bag.

Outside the windows the sky was still dark. It was almost four in the morning. Evelyn stood up. She put on her coat. She picked up the suitcase. Lena carried the smaller bag with the photographs and the baby shoes.

“Where will you go?” Lena asked at the door.

“I don’t know yet,” Evelyn said. “Somewhere quiet. Somewhere he cannot find me.”

Lena hugged her tightly. “Call me when you get there. Please.”

“I will.”

Evelyn left the apartment without looking back. She locked the door and slid the key under the mat. She did not need it anymore.

The streets were empty. A taxi waited at the corner. She had called it earlier. She put the suitcase in the trunk and sat in the back seat. Lena stood on the sidewalk and waved until the car turned the corner.

Evelyn rested her head against the window. The city lights passed by in soft blurs. She thought about the last conversation with Adrian. The way his eyes had stayed cold. The way he had said the words. “I never loved you.” She had waited for him to take them back. He had not. He had only stood there, hands in his pockets, as if the marriage had been a long and tiring mistake.

She pressed a hand to her stomach. There was no bump yet. Only a quiet knowing. She closed her eyes and spoke soft words that only she could hear.

“From now on… it’s just you and me.”

The taxi stopped at the train station. Evelyn paid the driver and walked inside with her bags. She bought a ticket for the first train leaving the city. It did not matter where it went. She only needed to leave.

Meanwhile, across the city, Adrian sat on the edge of their bed. The apartment felt too quiet. He had come home late and found the drawers open and half empty. Her side of the closet was almost bare. He had called her name. No answer.

He dialed her number. It rang once and went to voicemail. He called again. Same result. He sent a message. Then another. Then he tried the number a third time. The call did not go through. The line said the number was no longer in service.

He stood up and walked through every room. In the kitchen he saw the trash can. He reached inside and pulled out the torn pieces of paper and the small card. He pieced the card together on the counter.

The words stared up at him. “We are going to be parents.”

Adrian sat down hard on a chair. He read the card again. Then he tried her number one more time. Nothing. He called Lena. She did not answer either.

He stayed in the kitchen until the sun came up. The card remained on the counter. The empty drawers stayed open. The key under the mat was gone when he finally checked the hallway.

Evelyn sat by the train window as the city grew smaller behind her. The sky turned pale gray. She kept one hand on her stomach the whole time. She did not cry. She only watched the fields begin and the buildings disappear. She had packed only what she needed. Clothes. Photographs. The baby shoes. Nothing else.

She changed her phone number the day before. She had already spoken to the bank and the post office. By the time the sun fully rose, Evelyn Hart was on a train heading north, and the name Cole no longer belonged to her.

She leaned her head against the glass and whispered the same words again, softer this time.

“From now on… it’s just you and me.”

The train moved forward. The city stayed behind.

Five years later.I wake up early in my cozy apartment. Soft morning light slips through the curtains and falls across the bed. The air smells like coffee from the pot I set the night before. For a moment everything is quiet. Then a cheerful little voice calls from the doorway.“Mommy!”My five-year-old son Ethan climbs into the bed and throws his small arms around me. His hair is messy and his pajamas are twisted from sleep. He presses his warm face against my neck and giggles.“Good morning, my little bear,” I say. I pull him close and tickle his sides. He laughs so hard he almost rolls off the bed. I catch him and we both end up under the covers again, pretending the blankets are a fort. This is our morning routine. We make silly faces. We count the birds outside the window. He tells me about the dream he had where he could fly. I listen and smile and feel the deep, steady love that fills every corner of this small home. Adrian stood behind his desk and watched Evelyn’s face change. The folder shook slightly in her hands. He had not slept in three days. Every night he lay in the dark and stared at the ceiling. Every morning he rose with the same heavy weight pressing on his chest.Adrian had not slept in days. Dark circles sat under his eyes like bruises. His reflection in the office window looked like a stranger. The city lights outside the glass blurred together. He had been staring at the same stack of papers for hours. The divorce papers. His mother’s voice still rang in his head. She had called late last night, cold and sharp. If he did not end the marriage, she would destroy Evelyn’s father. Every account. Every deal. Every quiet loan the older man had taken to keep his small company alive. She would make sure nothing remained. His grandfather had spoken next. The old man did not raise his voice. He never needed to. If Adrian refused, control of the company would pass to someone else. Evelyn stepped out of the hospital doors and into the warm afternoon sun. A soft breeze touched her face. She paused on the steps and closed her eyes for a moment. A quiet smile spread across her lips. The doctor’s words still echoed in her mind. Six weeks pregnant. Healthy. Everything looked normal. She opened her eyes again and placed one hand gently over her stomach. There was nothing to feel yet, but she knew. A small life was growing inside her.She walked down the sidewalk with light steps. People passed by, but she barely noticed them. Her thoughts stayed on the news. After two years of marriage she and Adrian had almost stopped hoping. The quiet disappointment had settled between them for months. Now that weight was gone. Two blocks from the hospital she saw a small baby store. Soft blue and pink decorations filled the window. She pushed the door open. A gentle chime sounded above her head. The air inside smelled clean and new, like fresh cotton. She moved slowly along the she
