NINA

The hallway outside Liam’s penthouse felt too quiet, too polished, like even my footsteps didn’t belong there. I stood in front of the door for a second longer than necessary, my hand hovering just before I knocked, my pulse doing something I didn’t want to acknowledge. I told myself this was just a conversation, just something that needed to be said out loud, nothing more, nothing dangerous, nothing that could unravel everything I had been holding together.

I knocked anyway.

The door op

  • My Husband Brought Another Woman, I Chose His Best Friend    Chapter 169

I found Liam in the kitchen when I got home, and instead of saying anything, I just handed him my phone. He read the message slowly, his thumb pausing over the screen like he wanted to read it twice before he let himself react."When did this come in?" he asked, setting the phone down on the counter between us instead of keeping it in his hand."Right after the reassignment. In the stairwell."He was quiet for a moment, and I watched him do something I wasn't used to seeing from him. He waited."What do you want to do?" Liam asked finally.I looked at him, surprised. "You're not going to tell me what you think first?""I used to," he admitted. "I'm trying not to anymore. You asked me for that. I'm listening."Something in my chest loosened, small and quiet, the kind of relief that didn't need to announce itself."I want to figure out who sent it," I said. "Before anything else happens.""Then we figure it out."We called Ralph and Amy that same evening, no official meeting, just the f

I showed Liam the text that night, sitting across from him on the couch instead of pressed against his side, needing the space to watch his face when he read it.He read it twice, then set the phone down gently on the table between us."What do you want to do about it?" he asked.I blinked. "You're not going to tell me what you think we should do?""I'm asking first," Liam said, watching me carefully. "You told me that's what you needed. I'm trying to actually listen this time."It landed somewhere warm in my chest, small and quiet, the kind of thing that mattered more than any grand gesture could have. A few weeks ago he would have already had his phone out, already moving toward some solution of his own making. Instead he just sat there, waiting on me."I want to find out who sent it," I said. "Before I decide anything else.""Then that's what we do."We called Ralph and Amy over that same night, off the record, nothing official, just four people around Liam's kitchen island with ta

The email went out at nine in the morning, three lines long, the kind of message HR clearly wrote by committee. It said Nina Caldwell and Liam Ashford were in a relationship. It said proper disclosure had been made. It said nothing else.I read it four times at my desk before I let myself look up.Amy appeared a minute later, holding two coffees, and set one down in front of me without a word."You survived," she said, dropping into the chair across from me."Barely.""People are being normal about it," Amy said, glancing toward the open floor. "A little weird for maybe an hour. Then normal."She was right. A few people smiled at me on the way to the printer. One woman from accounting gave me a small nod, the kind you give someone who just got through something hard. Nobody said anything out loud. By eleven, the office had folded the news into itself and moved on, the way offices always did with things that weren't actually theirs to worry about.Ralph leaned into my cubicle around no

Apparently, we were going to need a longer meeting.Patricia looked between us for another second, as though waiting for one of us to explain the obvious thing she had somehow walked into without the benefit of the backstory.I looked down at the form. The blank beside Start Date of Relationship seemed unnecessarily large."I don't think this is going to be as simple as putting down a date," I said.Patricia leaned back in her chair."That's usually what dates are for."Liam made a quiet sound beside me that might have been a laugh.I looked at him."Don't.""I didn't say anything.""You were about to."He looked almost innocent.Patricia watched the exchange with the particular expression of someone who had spent enough time around executives to know when a meeting had stopped being entirely about business."All right," she said. "Let's take a step back."She pulled the form toward herself."We don't need the entire history. HR isn't asking for an essay.""That's good," Liam said.Pa

I knew Liam was going to do something about it before he said he was going to do something about it.That was the problem with knowing someone long enough. Eventually, you stopped listening only to what they said and started noticing everything they didn't.The way he'd gone quiet after I told him what I'd overheard. The precision with which he'd set his glass down. The phone already in his hand before I'd finished explaining that I didn't know who the employees were.By morning, I was fairly certain he'd either found them or had someone find them for him.I caught him in the kitchen before he left for work."You're not firing anyone."He looked up from his coffee."I didn't say I was.""You didn't have to."Something almost amused moved across his face. "Good morning to you too.""Liam."He sighed, setting the cup down."I wasn't going to fire them.""What were you going to do?""I was going to find out what happened.""They said something stupid in a break room.""They accused you o

  • My Husband Brought Another Woman, I Chose His Best Friend    Chapter 164

Patricia had the Larkspur situation quietly contained within two days, a few calls, some careful paperwork, the kind of clean, unglamorous fix that never made headlines precisely because it was handled before it could, the sort of quiet efficiency that came standard with a legal team billing more per hour than most people made in a week. It should have made things easier at the office. Instead, the stress of it seemed to have worn down some careful internal wall Liam and I had both been maintaining without ever discussing it out loud.I noticed it first in the hallway outside the executive conference room, his hand at the small of my back a beat longer than strictly necessary as he steered me toward the elevator, nothing dramatic, just present in a way it usually wasn't with other people around.I noticed it again in a meeting two days later, when he made a dry comment about a vendor's proposal, something only I would have understood as a callback to a joke from months ago, and caught

The familiar vibration of my phone pulled me out of the first peaceful sleep I had had in days. It danced on the wooden nightstand, clashing with the smooth melodies of Frank Sinatra's voice drifting somewhere nearby. It all felt like I was in a dreamland but with someone banging on my head to wak

LATER THAT DAY“What do you mean you can’t make it?” I asked, knowing fully well I wanted her to hear the disappointment in my voice. On the other end, Amanda sighed. “Nina, I’m so sorry. Kayla had homework. I sat down to help her and completely lost track of time. I should’ve called earlier to let

The loud movement downstairs dragged me the hell out of sleep. At first, I thought I was dreaming when I kept hearing voices and strange sounds in my head. The sounds came muffled through the wooden floors, persistent enough to keep tugging at my consciousness until I finally decided to open my eye

“Wait a minute. Isn’t that the boss’s wife sitting right there?”My ears heard those words despite the loud music playing while I sat still with my glass of champagne in my hand. Honestly, it took a lot for me not to turn my head in their direction.I sat alone at one of the VIP tables watching cam
