Chapter 269

Author: Bodhi Blossom
The next morning, Natalie stirred awake. After a quick glance at the clock and noting it was barely past 6:00 am, she rolled over.

Just as she was ready to drift off again, a thought hit her. Had she just glimpsed a message from Rowan?

She tapped on the screen, and sure enough, there was a message sent at 3:00 am. "I'm downstairs. You'll see me when you wake up."

Natalie threw back the covers and padded to the window, only to see a tall figure standing beneath a maple tree. She couldn't make out his face from this height, but she instantly knew it was Rowan.

Immediately, all her drowsiness vanished.

She washed her face, applied an exquisite layer of makeup, and slipped into a red dress. Then, she rushed down the stairs.

Susan emerged from the kitchen with a tray of warm, buttery-smelling pancakes and was surprised to see her at this ungodly hour. "Up so early?"

"S-Something came up," she stammered hesitantly. "Pack the breakfast in a lunchbox, Mom. I'll eat on the way."

Susan glanced up. "A delivery guy dropped it off today. It had your name on it, so I figured it was from Zane."Natalie immediately knew that it couldn't be Zane. This was not his style at all, and she hadn't heard from him in weeks, either. Her expression tightened as the thought sank in.Just then, her phone rang. She glanced at the screen, froze, and sprang from the couch. "I'm turning in early, Mom. You should, too."She sobered up awfully fast from her drunken stupor, didn't she?"Careful," Susan called after her in concern. After rushing back to her bedroom, Natalie calmed her breath before answering the phone. A man's low, sexy voice sounded through the line, "Still awake, Ms. Sutton?"Natalie couldn't explain where her sudden nervousness came from, but she was certain she was feeling a strange mix of nervousness and anticipation."Yeah…"Rowan hummed a little before asking, "Did you get my gift?"Her mind went straight to the ring in the velvet box, and it finally da

Fortunately, the news came with the relief that the surgery had been a success. Knowing that took away much of the weight Vera might have carried.Meanwhile, Natalie's art gallery renovation was finally wrapping up. Once it opened, it became one of the most talked-about art galleries. Amanda's name carried weight within the industry, after all. Many established painters signed contracts with her, but one artist in particular took her by surprise.Sadie came to Natalie and offered to sign an exclusive contract with her art gallery. When Natalie asked if she would like to reconsider that decision, she said, "Natalie, I wouldn't be here if it weren't for you. Signing an exclusive contract with your art gallery is the least I can do, and I'd even give you all my work."Back when Sienna's secret that she'd been using Sadie as her ghost painter was exposed, Sienna's reputation had crumbled overnight.Ironically, that scandal had given Sadie a break and allowed her talent to shine. She'

Instinctively, Natalie lunged forward and grabbed Zora's wrist at the very last second.Dangling over the edge, Zora tilted her head back to meet Natalie's eyes. "Just let go."Natalie clamped her iron grip on Zora, but holding on with one arm while the latter's full weight dragged her down wasn't an easy task. Inch by inch, she could feel herself being pulled toward the edge.Letting Zora fall just like that would haunt her forever. There was nothing wrong with Zora trying to seek death, but it should never happen on her watch. She heaved and gathered all her strength to pull Zora back up. "Have you ever thought that maybe what you feel for Dr. Blackwell isn't love at all? It might just be admiration and respect."If I were you, I'd fall in love for real and find out what the truth is before throwing my life away just like that."Zora's eyes lit up with something almost like hope. "Are you saying that I don't love him?""Love comes in many forms, but no one gets a second chance

Perhaps because Daphne had gotten nothing from Victor, she turned her temper on Natalie instead.Victor leaned against the walls with his hands in his pockets as he announced, "I'm not working at The Specular anymore and found a marketing job. It might not pay like before, but it's steady and makes me feel better."It wasn't the life he used to have, but he was content."That's great," Natalie lightly replied.Silence stretched between them until Victor suddenly said, "Natalie, I owe you an apology. I'm sorry."She only smiled and said nothing in response. The surgery ended ten hours later. The anesthesia still hadn't worn off when Vera was finally wheeled out, and behind her, Zora removed her mask. "The surgery was a success, Ms. Sutton. I didn't let you down, did I?""Truly remarkable skills, Dr. Ryder," Natalie commented. The specialists who'd doubted Zora earlier now trailed behind and were full of praise for her surgical skills. It was almost as if her young age and suppos

Susan's heart felt heavy with guilt, knowing she'd been far from competent as a mother. If she were in Natalie's place, she doubted she could have forgiven a woman like herself.Natalie reassuringly said, "It's all in the past, and you've paid the price for what happened. The Spencers are just reaping what they sowed. As for me, I'm doing just fine now, aren't I?"Susan knew Natalie was just trying to comfort her, and she sighed softly. Deep down, she vowed to treat Natalie better from now on and spend the rest of her life making up for the love she owed.…That evening, Natalie intended to cook dinner, but Susan refused to let her lift a finger. She snatched the apron over, tied it around her waist, and happily bustled into the kitchen.Natalie failed terribly in the argument and decided to let Susan have it her way. Before Vera was hospitalized, Natalie had been planning to start an art gallery in Grendale. She'd been scouting locations for weeks and recently decided on the per
