POV: GUINE

When the bond finally broke, I expected heartbreak. I did not expect the darkness inside me to wake up.

I stood before the full-length mirror, adjusting the high lace collar of my dress. My mother had thrown a weeping fit earlier, begging me to wear a soft pastel rose gown to make myself look "gentle and agreeable" for Kael. I had refused. Instead, I wore a restrained black silk dress, devoid of color or pretense. I was not appearing today as a repentant wife begging for forgiveness. I was appearing to cut a parasite from my life.

The rejection ritual took place in the central hall of the Moonstar estate. Sunlight streamed through the stained-glass windows, casting sharp ruby and sapphire light across the stone floor. Kael stood opposite me beneath the massive carved crescent moon, his tall frame clad in his formal Alpha jacket. His expression was cold, proud, and utterly confident.

The pack’s appointed officiant, an elderly wolf named Elder Thomas, cleared his throat, his hands trembling slightly as he held the ancient ritual parchment.

"Lady Guine Ravenshade," Elder Thomas began, his voice echoing off the high stone walls. "Are you aware that severing a mate bond is permanent? By breaking this sacred link, you forfeit all claims to the Moonstar Pack, its lands, its protection, and its name."

"I am aware," I said, my voice steady.

Kael’s eyes narrowed slightly. He had expected me to falter. In my first life, I had cherished the warmth of our mate bond, misinterpreting its intense pull as proof of genuine love. I had believed that because our souls were bound by nature, Kael would always choose me. Now, feeling the pulse of that link between us, it felt like nothing more than a rusted chain I had finally found the strength to snap.

"Lady Guine," Elder Thomas asked, looking at me over his spectacles. "Is your decision voluntary, free from coercion or despair?"

"Yes," I replied clearly.

"Ask her a second time, Elder," Kael interrupted, taking a step forward. His voice dropped into that low, persuasive register he always used when coaxing me into managing his pack’s messiest problems. "Guine, stop this. You are throwing away years of devotion over a simple misunderstanding. Walk away now, and we can move past this foolishness."

I didn't answer his spoken appeal. Instead, my new gift forced his private thoughts straight into my mind.

(Let her play her little game in front of the elders, Kael was thinking, a smug satisfaction coating his inner thoughts. Once she sees the social isolation waiting for her, she will come crawling back to my bed before the week is out. I will make her work twice as hard to earn her place back.)

I felt a cold wave of disgust, but I didn't give him the satisfaction of an argument. I simply looked past him, my gaze remaining fixed on the officiant.

"Ask the final question, Elder Thomas," I instructed softly.

Elder Thomas sighed, bowing his head. "For the third and final time, Lady Guine Ravenshade... do you, of your own free will, reject Alpha Kael Draven as your mate?"

"Yes," I declared, my voice cutting through the silent hall like a silver blade. "From this moment forward, I reject Kael Draven. The bond is broken."

As the final syllable left my lips, an agonizing tear ripped through the very center of my soul.

The invisible thread connecting my heart to Kael violently snapped. Pain, sharp, blinding, and visceral, flooded my chest. I stumbled back a step, gasping for air as my throat seized up. It felt as though a physical piece of my heart had been gouged out without warning.

Kael grunted, flinching as he gripped the edge of the wooden altar, his jaw clenching tight as he felt the snap of the bond.

Yet, beneath the agonizing hollow left by the broken connection, something else stirred deep inside me. A dormant, ancient power flared to life. A strange, cold pulse radiated from the core of my heart, rushing through my veins like liquid ice.

Around the ritual chamber, the tall tallow candles flickered violently. Their warm golden flames died down, briefly shifting into a haunting silver-black hue before snapping back to normal.

The sudden shadow sent a wave of nervous gasps through the gathered elders and witnesses.

"What was that?" Elder Thomas murmured, looking around in confusion. "A draft from the courtyard?"

Kael didn't look at the candles. He was staring directly at me, his golden eyes wide with a sudden, sharp unease. For the first time since I had woken up fifty days before the end, I saw a flicker of real doubt in his face. He reached out a hand toward me, his brow furrowed. "Guine... what did you just…"

I didn't stay to give him an answer.

Turning sharply on my heel, I picked up the shirt of my black dress and strode out of the ritual hall, leaving the murmuring elders and a stunned Kael behind.

The moment I stepped out into the grand courtyard, the world exploded into noise.

My new mind-hearing ability flared completely out of control. Without the mate bond acting as an anchor, every single unspoken thought of every servant, guard, and spectator in the courtyard slammed into my skull all at once.

(Did she really just reject the Alpha?)

(What will happen to our trade agreements now?)

(She looks so pale... she must be terrified.)

(I need to fix the eastern fence before the captain sees it…)

(Is Lady Vespera going to lose her estate?)

The overlapping voices rushed into my brain like a roaring waterfall, blindingly loud and utterly chaotic. The sheer volume made my head throb with agonizing pressure. I gasped, pressing both hands tightly against my ears as I stumbled toward the awaiting iron-trimmed carriage that held my traveling trunks.

"My Lady?" my coachman called out in alarm, rushing to open the carriage door. "Are you alright?"

I couldn't answer. I leaned against the heavy wooden door of the carriage, trembling from the sensory overload, trying desperately to push the sea of voices out of my head.

Suddenly, a voice cut through the overwhelming noise.

It wasn't loud. It wasn't chaotic. It was a single, crystal-clear whisper that sounded as if someone were standing right beside my ear, speaking directly into my soul.

“The Eclipse blood has awakened.”

A cold chill slammed through my entire body, freezing the blood in my veins. The voice was soft, terrifyingly ancient, and completely distinct from the chaotic thoughts of the crowd.

I spun around instantly, scanning the wide stone courtyard with wild, panicked eyes.

Grooms were tending to horses. Guards stood at their posts. Servants bustled past carrying laundry hampers. No one was looking at me. No one was near me.

The courtyard was empty around my carriage.

“Then who said that?”

POV: GUINEI had rejected Kael in front of witnesses. I thought that would be the end of it. I did not expect his mistress to move against me before the sun even set.The morning after the rejection ritual, the manor felt colder than usual. The heavy silence of the long stone corridors was broken only by the nervous shuffling of servants who went out of their way to avoid my eyes. When I called for my maid to fetch the morning ledgers and send word to the timber and grain merchants I normally dealt with, she returned empty-handed, trembling as she stammered that every single merchant was suddenly "unavailable."By afternoon, the truth behind their sudden absence became clear.Morgause Wren had visited my mother late last night. She had not come as a polite guest bearing condolences for a shattered marriage. She had come as a calculated woman protecting her newfound position, moving swiftly to consolidate her power before I could even pack my trunks.I didn't need to confront the house

POV: GUINEThe estate everyone told me was worthless was hiding enough wealth to make me independent of every person who had ever controlled me.By the morning following the rejection, rumors had already spread like wildfire through the highest aristocratic circles. The high-born ladies and pack nobility whispered behind their lace fans, claiming I had suffered a nervous breakdown. Kael’s supporters were vocal and mocking, loudly declaring across the district that I would regret abandoning an Alpha’s protection the moment reality set in. They assumed I would come crawling back once I found myself penniless and socially ruined. They had no idea where I was going.Shortly after dawn, my carriage pulled up in front of the quiet, grey-stone office of sir. They had insisted that Eclipse H

POV: GUINEMy family called me selfish for refusing to pay their debts, but not one of them asked why I had spent my entire first life paying them.By mid-afternoon, news of my signed rejection declaration had spread through the Moonstar estate like wildfire. I had barely finished packing my private ledgers into an iron-bound chest when my mother, Lady Vespera, and my uncle, Lord Reginald, burst into my quarters without knocking."Guine! Have you completely lost your mind?" my mother cried, her voice rising to a sharp screech as she swept into the room, her heavy silk gown rustling loudly. "You dare publicly humiliate Alpha Kael? You speak of formal mate rejection as if your marriage were a childish game!"Uncle Reginald slammed the heavy oak door shut behind them, his round face flushed with rage. "You are destroying this family's future over a petty marital disagreement! Kael is a powerful Alpha. Do you have any idea what will happen if the Draven household withdraws its financial p

POV: GUINEKael laughed when I rejected him, and for the first time, his laughter sounded like the voice of a man who had never known me at all."A rejection ritual?" He shook his head, a smirking, arrogant expression settling over his features as he leaned back against the edge of his desk. "Guine, stop this foolishness. You are throwing a tantrum over household accounts. Do you really think you can scare me into paying more attention to you?"He crossed his arms, looking down at me as if I were a child making empty threats."Let me remind you of reality," Kael continued, his voice dripping with condescension. "Without my protection, you have no independent standing. Your family depends entirely on the alliance between the Moonstar Pack and yours. You enjoy the luxury of this Pack, the prestige of being my Luna, and the respect of my elders because of my name."Every word falling from his lips made my blood run cold, not from fear, but from horror at how completely blind I had been.

I can still feel the agonizing heat of the lunar energy scorching my skin, boiling my blood from the inside out.I had given everything to save them, every ounce of my power, my energy, my life. I used the last of my strength to hold off the horde so Alpha Kael Draven, my mate, could reach the supply carriage. When the refuge collapsed and the wolves breached the inner courtyard, I dragged my broken body toward the carriage, gasping for air.
