Korra stood alone, shaking so hard she could barely breathe. And as she collapsed to her knees, her heart pounding in her ears, she didn’t know what to believe anymore.

The cold earth struck her palms and seeped through her bones. Her breath came in short, broken bursts, fogging in the night air. The world around her blurred, and the trees melted into shadows.

She clutched her stomach, curling forward until her forehead nearly touched the grass.

“No… no,” she whispered, her voice cracking raw and small. “He’s lying… he has to be lying…”

A sob tore from her chest, violent and uncontrollable.

Lucien’s words echoed in her mind. “Your mother’s death was no accident.

She was hunted.”

She squeezed her eyes shut so hard they ached.

Her mother’s face rose behind her eyes, warm brown eyes, soft smile, hair pinned back loosely as she prepared herbs in their old wooden bowl. Her mother had always been gentle, soft-spoken, and warm.
