Garrick finished the mark near the turn of the night.

He looked worse for the effort, but his hand was steady when he pushed the scrap across to me. “This is the best the fragments give. A secondary point west of the main ring. If the circuit is still open and the bloodline stands there with intent, it can force the work to draw wrong. I cannot promise more than that.”

I took the scrap. “It is enough to try.”

Asher stood at the foot of the cot with his arms folded. “Group size.”

“Four,” I said.

We left before the night had fully settled into itself. No speeches at the gate. Asher watched us go with a face that had already accepted the cost and hated it anyway. Wren stood beside him, good arm tight across her body, and did not waste words she had already used.Sable stayed on the walls. The group that walked with me was smaller than the last one and harder in the eyes. Ronan. Two trackers. Three fighters who still had clean movement left. Oren should have been in a cot. He was present anyway, bandaged and silent. The trackers set the line west.“They have a lead,” the first one said under her breath. “Not a long one if they stopped to manage two frames. We can cut the angle through the dry creek bed and meet their path before the border stones.”“Do it,” I said. “No lights. No extra sound.”We moved. The bond sat awake between Ronan and me, still scraped from the river fold. Every so often it pulled as if the damaged stone ahead had not forgotten the shape of me.Ronan matche

The council room filled before the runner’s dust had settled.Asher closed the door once Sable, Wren, Garrick, Ronan, and the remaining senior voices were inside. I stayed on my feet because sitting felt like giving the next report more room than it deserved.“They are not coming here,” I said. “They broke the river fold down, packed the cracked slab, and moved farther northeast. Fast. No attempt on the walls.”Sable confirmed it. “Distant eyes saw the same. Heavier force still together. No split toward us. They are treating the broken piece like it still has use.”Garrick’s mouth was a flat line. “A cracked seat can sometimes be forced to finish on a prepared ground. If they have a third site ready, the damage we did only becomes a delay.”Wren looked around the table. “So we stopped at nothing. We only made them walk farther with the same stone.”“We stopped the seating that was already in progress,” Ronan said. “That is nothing. It is also not a finish.”Asher planted both hands on

The medical building filled faster than the reports did. Oren was taken first. The rest of the wounded followed. Two names stayed missing on the slate by the door. No one wrote them as dead yet. No one wrote them as coming back either. Asher closed the door of the small command room once the critical people were inside. Wren. Sable. Garrick on his cot. Ronan was standing because sitting still seemed beyond him. Me. “Say it clean,” Asher said. “We reached the river fold before they finished seating it,” I said. “The working piece was already in the ring. We broke the frame and cracked the slab. The light started and then failed. We lost two on the way out. They know I was on the stone when they tried to take it.” Garrick’s face tightened. “Tried to take how?” “It pulled through the bond. Completion, not resistance. I stepped off. That is when the seating dropped.” Ronan spoke from the wall. “If she had stayed on it a breath longer I am not sure we would have gotten her off.” Wr

We found the river fold by midmorning.Pell would have read the ground faster, but he was still spent. The tracker we had instead raised a fist at the last tree line and kept his voice low.“Perimeter is set and not finished. They are still clearing the east side of the stonework. The frame with the cloth is already inside the ring.”Ronan moved up beside me. The bond sat tight and awake. “They are closer to seating it than the reading party thought.”“Then we do not wait for a better look,” I said. “We go to work. Everything else is noise.”Sable was not with us. The hole her absence left showed in the way the group looked to me for the last call.I split them the way she would have. “Two on the left to pull attention. Two on the right to cut the far edge. The rest with me at the ring. We break the stone. We do not stay to win the field.”A low murmur of assent moved through the line.We left the trees. The first contact came sooner than I wanted. A perimeter pair turned at the wrong

The reading party left before the maps were even fully reset. Three wolves. Fresh legs. No extra gear. Asher gave the order twice so no one could claim they had heard it wrong. Learn the destination. Take no contact if they can avoid it. Return. The camp tried to work while they were gone. It did a poor job of it. People kept glancing northeast as if the trees might send the answer first. I stayed in the command space with Wren and Garrick. Ronan sat near the wall because the healers had given up arguing with him. Sable came and went with outer-line reports that never changed enough to matter. Wren broke the quiet first. “If those tracks lead to another ring, you are going.” “If they can seat the pattern there, someone has to deal with it.” “It does not have to keep being you.” Garrick shifted on the cot, grimacing. “The fragments do not offer a substitute line. They want the one that already answered. Twice.” Ronan’s voice was low. “Then the reading party is not only bringing

We reached the outer markers at first gray light. The watch post recognized us and opened fast. Word moved ahead of us into the camp before we cleared the gate. Asher met us in the yard with Wren beside him. Both of them took in the blood, the exhaustion, and the fact that there were still four of us walking. “Report,” Asher said. “The counter ground worked long enough to kill the light,” I answered. “The main site went dark. The unit that found us pulled back toward it when it happened. We did not stay to confirm whether it stayed down.” Wren’s eyes moved over each of us. “You look like you barely made it off the ground.” “We barely did,” Ronan said. His voice was rough. The bond between us felt scraped empty, as if too much had moved through it too fast. Sable limped up from the direction of the outer posts, still favoring the cut thigh. “Any pursuit on the return?” “No,” Pell said. “They broke toward the main site and did not turn back. We took the longer fold home.” Garric
