Erik

The forest is louder than it should be. There's an undertone that brushes against the limits of sound. One that buzzes in the hollow of my throat and coils behind my eyes.

I keep walking anyway, one step after the other, even as the weight of it presses in like a storm about to break.

Scarlett walks ahead of me. Her blue eyes flick left and right, sharp as ever, her shoulders tense beneath the sweep of her coat.

The others are fanned out among the trees, forming a loose semicircle.

Chris and Elliott stick close together. Just as they always do.

Ilsa stalks further left, Caelan attached like a shadow beside her.

And me? I’m human. Mortal. The weakest link. The only one who can’t physically challenge any threats.

But I’m only useless if I let myself be.

The trail narrows and becomes choked with roots.

The moment I step between two leaning stones, something presses against my chest like a hand.

Foreign magic that doesn’t belong to anyone in our group.

Scarlett turns as I stumble. “E

OmniscientThe forest has gone quiet again. Not the safe kind of quiet. Not the hush of peace or rest. This quiet is watching.Scarlett is the first to say it.“Something’s changed.” Her voice is low, edged in warning. Her blue eyes flick across the tree line, gold flickering at their center.Caelan doesn’t speak. He just tips his head toward the west, where the shadows bend the light wrong. His jaw is clenched, silver eyes unreadable.Chris grips his sword tighter. Elliott's hand lingers just behind his back, not quite touching, but ready to.“I had a dream,” Ilsa says. Her voice is quieter than the others, like she doesn't want the trees to hear. “About a throne made of roots. And a crown of antlers.”Erik swears under his breath. They follow the feeling of unease.Past the burnt grove. Past the seam that Scarlett and Caelan sealed shut.Through a gulley choked with moss and bones. The light doesn’t behave right here. It sharpens and dulls like a heartbeat. Then they find it.Stone.

Scarlett & CaelanSCARLETTThe trees thin too quickly. One moment, the forest crowds in, thick with shadow and scent and memory. The next, we stumble into a clearing that doesn’t feel like it belongs to this world at all.The air is thinner. The light is off. The space between things feels stretched, like the edges of a dream fraying just before waking.Caelan slows beside me. His silver eyes scan the ground, the trees, the sky.I follow his gaze to the tear in the earth ahead. A jagged wound, maybe four feet wide, snaking through the clearing like a scar.Light rises from it. It’s not moonlight or fire, but something far stranger.“That’s not a sinkhole,” I murmur.“No,” he agrees. “That’s the Veil. Or what’s left of it.”Magic hums under my skin. Not mine. Not Erik’s. The forest’s. The other thing’s.I inch closer to the fissure, heat prickling up my spine.“It’s far too thin here,” I say.He nods in agreement. “This is one of the seams. Where the world gives way.”I crouch at the e

Chris & ElliottCHRISThe moment the howl splits the sky, I know it isn’t real.Elliott’s already on his feet beside me, sword half-drawn, blue eyes sharp and electric. The mist around us thickens like breath on glass, curling around our boots and crawling up our legs. I can’t smell a damn thing through it. Whatever’s coming doesn’t reek like it should.Which means it’s not alive. Or it’s not actually here. But it comes anyway. The first wolf steps from the fog like it’s made of it.Its’ body is gaunt, bones showing through silver-pale fur, eyes a bottomless white. It moves like it remembers pain. Like it’s looking for somewhere to put it.“Specters,” I breathe.Elliott nods once, jaw clenched. “They’re watching us.”A second form emerges, then a third. An entire pack, circling. Some still half-faded, their legs vanishing into mist. One bears a ragged brand on its chest. The same broken sun I saw in the journal. Ash-born.They don’t growl. Don’t snarl. Just stare.I shift, claws break

IlsaThe fog comes fast. One moment, I can see the others.Scarlett’s gold-flared stare, Chris’s wolf form moving ahead like a streak of midnight muscle, Erik’s fingers glinting with residual spell-light.Then the next, it’s all swallowed. White and thick and damp, curling like breath held too long.I reach for Caelan’s arm, but he’s not there. Only air. Only mist. The surge of panic this calls forth is something I’ll have to think about later."Chris?" I call. "Elliott?"No answer. The silence has teeth, which coils and buzzes beneath my skin. Like something massive breathing just out of reach. My heartbeat pulses behind my ears, loud enough to drown the quiet. It’s not real, I tell myself. Something that’s not really here can’t hurt me.But even that feels like a lie. Like the kind you whisper to a child before sleep. And then I see the flash of movement. Not behind me, ahead. Between two gnarled trunks thick with moss, a shape flickers. Large and loping. It’s a wolf, but not the wa

ElliottThere’s blood in the air.Not fresh. Not wet. Old. Baked into the bark and roots like something the forest refused to forget.Chris crouches low beside me, fingers splayed in the dirt, nostrils flaring. “It was here.”“Whatever it is,” I mutter.Because I still don’t know what we’re tracking. The scent twists in on itself, loops and doubles back like it’s leading us in a circle. But it feels like a trail. Like we’re meant to follow it. Like something wants to be found.Or wants us lost. That possibility shouldn’t be discounted. The others fan out across the clearing.Scarlett brushes her hand along a twisted trunk etched with runes I don’t recognize.Erik murmurs under his breath, casting a spell to see beneath the surface.Ilsa stands apart from us, her shoulders tense. Caelan is beside her, unreadable as always. But it’s clear something’s changed between them. They’re no longer just fuck buddies.I hate how the forest watches. Not looks. Watches. Like a predator crouched jus
