Chapter 1 - The Invader

If you had asked me a week ago “how are you Brooke?” Just a simple question, one I would have replied with “on top of the world… amazing, couldn’t be better”.

If you asked me that now… not only would I answer with something completely opposite,like... 'I want to die inside!' or, I’d probably cry before I could even utter any words. It all happened so fast, it all fell apart so quickly, right before my eyes, and I didn’t know how to stop it, or even if I could stop it.

They came when we least expected it, when we had less guards patrolling than usual, just for one night, just for one special occasion, something to celebrate the future for us all. We were all so happy, merry, tucking into the delicious canapés that were so thoughtfully put together by our palace omega and expert chefs. The champagne bubbles filled our glasses, topped up regularly by our dedicated waiters. All of us women dressed in our best gowns, especially bought or made just for this one occasion, and the men looked like pure gentlemen in their crisp tailored suits. We danced, we chatted from one person to the next, we laughed, and everyone was just as excited for the night ahead as I was…as my father and mother were. A celebration my parents had been waiting so long for, one that I had worked years to be ready for… and I was ready…. Or at least I thought I was! I studied every detail about our pack, about our people and our history. I made sure our people loved and respected me. I was the daughter of an alpha and Luna, I played that part to the best of my ability. But little did I know…. So naively I didn’t make time to prepare myself for what turned out to be the most important thing my pack needed me for.

I felt like a complete failure! So useless and in no way fit to call myself the next Luna! No matter how much my aunty Emma tried to comfort me, tried to reassure me that there was nothing I could have done, that listening to my mother’s orders was the only way. But as hard as she tried to get her words to sink into my head, they never did.

Seven days and eight hours later, we all still felt doomed! Looking over our shoulders, quietly and carefully trying to survive with what little of our pack we had left. Hiding in a small little village tucked away by the surrounding woods and a river that the other three alpha clans believed belonged to humans. It was my grandfather’s greatest and thought out plan that he had spent years dedicated to building in secrecy. A safe place for us to escape to, should we ever be overturned by an enemy… a power grabber… a thief!

That’s what they were…. Thieves! Vicious, greedy thieves of the night, determined to destroy the one clan that they’d always seemed to despise!

There were so little of us left that there were still houses lying empty, dark and quiet. I looked out my bedroom window, past the secluded village at the foreboding woods ahead. I watched in fear every night as the few guards we had with us patrolled the area. I hated it here at night, it was so eerie, cold and isolated and the threat that loomed just past the trees made my skin prickle with goosebumps. Very few of us were content here, and although it looked a lot prettier and cosy during the day, we were always on edge, we felt too close to the monsters that burst through our lands that night and killed everything in sight. I already had my suspicions about who it was, the only clan that had attempted to overthrow us when I was just a baby…. The moon wolves. My father never did find out why they chose to attack. They had barely made it to our border by the time our men had killed too many of theirs and they reluctantly retreated with their alpha.

From all my studying though, I had learned enough about each pack that resided nearby. Our four packs dominated the forests and mountains on this side of the world, never would an alpha, a million miles away come to us, or have even heard of us! No… no, it had to be one of the other three clans.

The Earth wolves, led by the last and only Lycan. He alone was too powerful for anyone to want to mess with, but with all his strength and skill, he and his warriors lived peacefully somewhere out there deep in the forest where no other alpha even knew of their location. They’d have absolutely no interest in our land, we may have crops and animals that have always thrived, and our territory was vast with hundreds of pack members all doing their part to keep our lands green, nourished and clean. Earth wolves were too rigid when it came to their privacy, too rigid to expose themselves and attack a pack that wouldn’t benefit them in any way. They were at their strongest and happiest surrounded by nature and water.

Then there were the howlers, or what we call, the mountain wolves. I had never seen one. In fact, I don’t think anyone in my pack had, as the howlers never left their territory hidden up in the snow cold mountain tops. All I knew of them was that their fur was all white, not a speck of silver, grey or black… pure white that helped them to blend in with their environment, again where they were at their strongest. Their alpha was always protective, like each pack member was just an extension of his family.

Last but not least were the moon wolves, now led by their new alpha, Marco. He is the one that did it, I know it! It was his father that had attacked many years ago. Drawing their strength from the moon, they’d wreak havoc throughout the forest at night. Sometimes we could even hear their howls and taunts to any unsuspecting rogue or defenseless animal. They’d eat more than they needed as if they were a pack of hyena’s rather than wolves, like their bellies were never full or just killing for sport rather than necessity.

Long before Marco’s father attempted to attack our pack, a truce had been put in place between all four clans to live separately in peace. A treaty set by our ancestors, it was supposed to be criminal to try and take another’s land. But my father was never one to chase after a war so when they had retreated he didn’t go after them and there was no higher alpha or lord to report to. We were each in charge to protect and guard our own.

I reluctantly got back into bed and closed my eyes just hoping tonight there would be no nightmares, no flashback of that night. I hated having them, then waking up to see it was still dark and quiet. I didn’t exactly do myself any favours, staring out the window and scaring myself anyway before going to sleep, but I couldn’t help it, the guilt and worry of my people only weighed heavier each day. Could we really try and live here long term and feel safe? Would we ever relax hoping they would assume no one escaped? I had to make a choice, stay or get the hell away from here and try to blend into the next human town. Luckily, as the sun wolves, we were the only ones that could. Our strength was drawn from the sun even on its murkiest and stormy days and our eyes didn’t glow at night like the moon wolves. We didn’t need to be surrounded by nature or the blistering cold, we adapted to all conditions, and we could be assumed as a normal human unlike the rest of the clans. The only thing stopping me from leaving was the thought of running away from any pack members left alive instead of going back to save them.

In all my years of preparing…. Why, oh why, did I not put in enough time to train!  I scolded myself as I fidgeted in bed. I had learned fighting skills, but nowhere near enough to take down another alpha and his pack. I knew just by the crazed look in his eyes that if I went up against him, it would be me that lost…. That I was completely certain of.

Chapter 2 - The flashback
“I cant believe tonight has come already”. Mother chimed as she fixed her hair next to me in the mirror. “My little girl.”. she cooed with a smile. “Hmm, not so little anymore though”. She said with a sad look as she stopped what she was doing and just stared sadly at me in the mirror.“Muuum!”. I scoffed with a grin. “Youre not going to cry again are you?”. “No, Im not”. She replied adamantly but her watery eyes said different. “But you do know don’t you, how proud I am of you. Youre just so beautiful inside and out”. “Yes, I know you are mum”. I said as I turned to face her. “You’re making it sound as if I’m leaving or something. I’m still going to see you and father every day!”. I reminded her, wiping her tear so it wouldn’t smudge her freshly applied makeup.“But you’re going to be the new Luna!”. She exclaimed. “It’s a very big deal Brooke, and as excited as I am for you, I’m just…. Well, a little sad I guess. All of a sudden it seems as if you’ve just grown up overnight. And I’

Chapter 3 - The survivors
We all sat in the simply built hall, eating our food in almost silence, apart from the occasional whispers or coughing, we all looked so defeated and empty. The room was bare, with just a few lamps on the white painted walls and mahogany tables set around the room, though only few of us filled them. There was only one hundred of us here, which felt like nothing compared to the five hundred we had been used to mingling and living with every day on our pack. We didn’t know if they were all dead or if more got out but ran for the nearest human town instead of here, we didn’t even know what would become of us, where our future lay and if we’d ever be able to set foot on our old pack lands again. Everything had been ripped away in the blink of an eye and we had more questions than answersAunty Emma, Uncle Max and a few others kept suggesting we moved on, and at first I felt the same way. We could use our blending ability to our benefit and live within human territory. But it wasn’t as eas

Chapter 4 - The choice
Me and Lacey had spent hours talking in her bed, she cried, I cried but we comforted each other knowing we felt just as scared and lost as each other. My aunty and Max had been trying to give me advice and guide me, but it was Lacey that understood the most, the turmoil I was feeling from having to lead the rest of us. She held my hand when I told her I couldn’t wrap my head around this being the way I had become the Luna…. And Luna of what? I could even sense that no one here really viewed me in that way apart from the guards, even then it was only out of loyalty the need to protect me. If anything they were doing a better job so far at keeping us safe than I was. So far all I’d done is cry and be so indecisive of what was best for us all. I felt like a pathetic excuse for a Luna, nothing like the strong and capable Luna my mother was.Even though me and Lacey had talked until we fell asleep, it didn’t stop the nightmare from reoccurring as I woke up in sweat and tears but having her

Chapter 5 - The sanctuary
We spent three days walking and hiking through muddy terrains, grass several feet taller than us, we pushed on through in the stormy rain and winds, sleeping and resting under make-shift shelters we’d quickly thrown together. If that wasn’t bad enough, I don’t think my pack were too keen on how strict I had become with them. I understood that we were all hungry from walking so far every day, but they’d scour through the only food rations we had bought with us as if we had an endless supply in the bottom of our bags! They’d refuse to move when it was too wet or cold or winge about how dirty their shoes and clothes were, and sometimes I nearly lost my patience! I’d try so hard to remind them how vital it was that we kept moving, that we had enough food to last before I went back to the village for more. I’d tell them how we had faced much worse than what we were now. So many times they had shown just how privileged and sheltered they were whilst under my parents rule, and if I had becom

Chapter 6 - The hope
After seeing my own mother killed right in front of my eyes, and watching the Sun pack being torn apart, I never thought I’d be able to smile again. But no matter how devastating and tough things were for us all, we’d managed to find our own way to survive, and bit by bit, we had begun to see brighter days ahead of us.After six months of endless trips back and forth, putting together new homes, adjusting to our new, simple way of living, our new territory was beginning to thrive with laughter and hope.We had several homes built now, and even though they looked more like shacks compared to what we used to live in, it never stopped everyone celebrating with applause each time one was finished and ready for its new owners. So far, all the homes had been given to the older members and the couples with children. But the sleeping area for the rest of us was slightly upgraded with more privacy, each bed sectioned off with curtains we pulled from the windows in the village and more sheeting

Chapter 7 - The friend
I looked on with a smile at the three new houses built and one of them I especially assigned to Lacey and her mother. I could see her old cheery self, coming back as she encouraged her heartbroken mother to be just as delighted as she was. She held her mother’s hand and led her inside to marvel at the furniture we’d managed to bring from the village. There was so much to feel more positive about now. In just two weeks we’d gotten better and quicker at building more homes and our hunting, along with the traps were keeping us all well fed. But there were still times throughout the day or night when it was all quiet that some of us would reflect on what we’d lost. Lacey’s mum, Annie, would cry a lot, missing her mate more than she could really bear, and of course, she wasn’t the only one to have lost someone she loved. There were quite a few of us here that would talk about the ones who didn’t escape, the guards that put their lives on the line with my parents. None of it stopped us thou

Chapter 8 - The captive.
The following night everyone was feeling more cheerful and merry than usual as we tucked into the array of fish we had caught from the river. We sat around the fire feasting with a sense of pride in how much we were progressing, and I found my restless nights weren’t occurring as often as they used to. Miles away from our old pack, we were starting to see a future ahead of us, one in which we were safe and no longer grieving from the tragedy that had kicked us all down. There still wasn’t a day that passed where we didn’t think of it, or ask ourselves why it had to happen, but at least now, we didn’t feel as though we were looking over our shoulders every minute of the day and night.I didn’t tell anyone though, not even Lacey that I’d see that man’s yellow sinister eyes glaring right in front of me, whether I was awake or sleeping, they’d just appear right in front of me. I’d be busying myself with hunting, training, assisting with the house builds, gathering whatever we needed for t

Chapter 9 - The monster.
The man’s hands suddenly grabbed my waist and yanked me off of his shoulder, causing me to fall to the floor. He wrapped his hand around the back of my neck, as his friend just ahead opened the secret doorway… Shit! My heart thumped. I’m back! “Get to your feet now!” The man glowered as he tightened his grip.I gingerly got to my feet as he pushed me forward into the main hall, and I gulped at the foreboding feeling lurching in my stomach. My eyes darted toward the entrance doors at the spot where my mother had been ruthlessly killed. I inhaled a deep breath, pushing away the tears that were springing to my eyes. This room had always felt so bright and elegant, a place to socialise, dance, gather for plays and candlelit dinners my parents always arranged. We’d held so many ceremony’s here for fated and chosen mates, or mixers as a chance for all the singles to get better acquainted. But now, it looked so gloomy and dark, it had lost it’s joy and cheerful memories. They led me through

Chapter 10 - The prison.
“Get in there!” The man ordered as he pushed me into one of the cells. I scraped my knee against the rough gritty stone as I stumbled in. “The day your alpha decides to kill you, I’ll be first in line to see it”. He sneered, clearly he was still pissed I had shattered two of his teeth in the tunnel.“He’s not my alpha!” I retorted, imagining all the ways I’d love to kill them right now.“Well, you’re down here, and he’s up there, so, I think you’ll find he is and will always be your alpha”. “And the day I decide to kill you, I’ll make sure it’s slow and excruciating” I seethed as he locked the door, standing on the other side of the bars.“And how are you going to do that, now you’re stuck in here with the rest of the pieces of shit?”. He grinned. “Play nice with your new friends!” He added before walking away, swinging all the prison keys on its chain. As soon as he mentioned the word ‘friends’, I turned around to see I wasn’t in the cell alone, but only one of them I recognised.“B
