NIGHT OF SHAME

LOLA

It was cold.

I'd rather be sleeping as it was quite late too, but I wouldn't dare go against Eddy's order.

Sitting in a corner of the medium-sized room with dim colored lights flickering on and off, I allowed my mind get lost in the way the other guests walked around silently, their fingers clipped to the tail of tall wine glasses, their gaze steady like they were actually meditating on the low Italian music that rumbled gently out of the speakers in the background.

I tried to figure out what their expectations were from their outfits — shiny, casual, skimpy.

It looked like whatever was going to be done tonight would be focused on the women.

I swallowed, but making sure my expression fell back to the default "happy wife" smile.

The world must not know how much I have to bear standing by Eddy's side as his wife. I had to protect Eddy's reputation at all costs.

The pangs of pain from still being trapped in a marriage that felt more like prison clawed at my chest.

I threw my head back as tears twitched against my eye lids, blinking rapidly to sick them all up.

By the time I pulled my head back, my eyes met Eddy's.

He was sitting on the other side of the chair arrangement, directly opposite me.

His gaze was stern and steady and I wondered how long he had been looking at me for.

Like I have always done whenever we were in public, I allowed my expression to dissolve into that practiced smile that couldn't last longer than a second, two seconds at most.

He didn't smile back. I never expected him to.

I watched his lips fall open.

"Watch your actions."

I stared as he muttered the words slowly, silently. He knew I got the message, so he just looked away afterwards, beginning a conversation with another man who had taken the seat behind him.

I watched him for a while as he chatted away excitedly, wholly, like he had no single problem in his life.

I felt uneasiness build up in my stomach. I wasn't very sure I wanted to be here anymore.

The arrangement was somewhat off and for some reason, I felt like Eddy was going to pull a fast one on me.

He never told me about this occasion — an attitude he had picked up just recently, and I knew it was him revolting against my inability to fulfill my own end of that ridiculous bargain.

I tried not to think about it, allowing my thoughts to wander to the incident yesterday, the one that happened with Freddy in the kitchen.

No matter how much I thought about it — the embarrassment of being caught in action, my eyes bleeding desire and my pathetic mind scratching off satisfaction from wherever I could get them — they still made my bones weak.

As far as I could remember, Freddy was walking slowly towards me with this fire in his eyes, but I didn't wait to find out what kind of fire it was.

I couldn't wait.

I had hurried past him before he was even able to say another word, and I didn't stop until I was inside my room, door locked against my shame which had still managed to remain with me until now.

A sharp pain tugged at my lower abdomen, I couldn't stop myself from gasping, clutching at the empty seat beside me.

I knew this was going to happen when Eddy insisted I wore this outfit.

"If I were you, I would stay out of trouble," he had replied before storming out of the room when I tried to bargain for an outfit change.

"Are you uncomfortable?" a bold controlled voice asked from behind me, causing me to almost jump out of my skin.

I had forgotten I and Eddy were not the only ones in the space.

I had forgotten that the other humans weren't mechanical.

"I'm sorry, but you creeped up on me," I turned sharply to look at the elderly woman, and I couldn't help but gasp at the bling and shine covering her outfit and how strange it made her look.

She must have mistaken my expression for approval, because she suddenly asked if I loved her outfit with a spark growing in her eyes.

I couldn't bring myself to lie to her, at the same time, I didn't want her to feel bad.

So, I nodded a couple times, trying my best to force up a smile.

"Thank you so much," she giggled like a child would upon getting her favorite toy.

It was weird.

The pain that stretched my abdomen attacked again. Immediately, I clutched my stomach with my right hand, holding my breath.

I felt a trickle of sweat travel down my spine, my body shaking to my effort at swallowing the pain.

"I think you need an outfit change. You don't look very comfortable in this one," the woman said, her eyes roaming all over me.

"It's a pity though."

I raised my eyes curiously at her last words.

"I mean, it's the prettiest in the room and I could tell it cost a fortune."

My breathing dipped, an urge to tell her the truth beneath the show tugging at my mind.

"It seemed....," her sharp eyes inspected me more.

"too inappropriate for your body type."

"I hope you don't mind my bluntness," she chipped in, her eyes searching mine for a reaction.

I swallowed the pain her words had unravelled in my chest.

"What is happening here today?" I managed to ask, my mind racing fast as I watched her stall for a moment, shock lines drawing across her face.

For some reason, the time seemed to go by faster, and I could feel Eddy's stare hot against my back — a silent warning that I might just get embarrassingly pulled out of this conversation soon.

"You don't know?" she asked, her voice a tone lower from surprise.

I returned her an appealing smile.

"We're doing pole dancing," her eyes lightened up like it was the best news.

"Pole dancing?"

My mind raced mindlessly through the series of possibilities that would never be in my favour on a night like this.

"You don't look pleased."

I was going to reply, but my mind's response to high discomfort was to prompt my body to move.

I was already walking away.

"I'm sorry," I muttered absentmindedly, doubting if she had caught that.

I wasn't sure where I was going, but I needed to get away from the space.

Hurriedly, I walked past the guests that looked more like threats now, turning towards a sharp corner that looked empty.

My head was heavy. The thoughts overlapped themselves and panic masked my mind. I kept on walking, the music growing dim behind me, until I stopped abruptly in front of a door.

I was thinking of so many things at the same time, I wasn't aware of my surroundings. I didn't see the man that had pushed the door opened until I slammed into him.

  • SCORNED BY HIM, DESIRED BY THE THREE   I MIGHT NEVER HAVE

GREGORYThe city stretched out in front of me as I gazed out of the window, the after taste of the white wine still lingering somewhere down my throat. My fingers stiffened against the glass wedged between them, still half filled. The loud thoughts I had carried carefully since the first day weighed in my chest.I grunted, clearing my throat loudly.I couldn't hold it down, but I couldn't even move forward with everything happening in my family at the moment.I knew I needed to be careful. There was the company, and the future of my sons.I knew it wasn't going to be easy. Maybe, Lola was a distraction that shouldn't even cross my mind, but I couldn't help it. Sighing, I clasped my fingers tighter around the glass, glaring hard at the landscape of the city. Lola's room was right next to mine, but what good does that even do me if I can't call her over.It just kept getting harder for me to sleep, especially with knowing she was inside, probably taking a bath or sprawled out n*ked on

  • SCORNED BY HIM, DESIRED BY THE THREE    THE MORE I WANTED TO GO

FREDDYThrough practice, I couldn't stop thinking about Lola. Maybe because I knew she was watching me like old times, and it sparked feelings that ought to have stayed buried until forever.Through the banter between her, my father and Eddy, I couldn't care less. I just stayed at the parts of her body that weren't concealed under the jacket draped across her shoulders. As soon as I got the opportunity to ask, I took it, and of course, Lola couldn't say No to me.It was a little hard convincing my coach to allow me to stay outside the team house. By the time I had concluded with the boys, checked into a hotel room, got a shave and freshened up, time was far spent. As I scurried into the elevator for the fifth floor, I wondered if she was waiting up for me or perhaps, given up and gone to bed.But then, Eddy was there. I didn't expect him to be. I didn't turn back though. I hadn't made all of those arrangements to chicken out of his presence."You shouldn't have said that, Freddy. What

  • SCORNED BY HIM, DESIRED BY THE THREE    A FIRE I DIDN'T START

LOLAAnother knock broke out against my door — sharp, impatient. My breathing seized for a second."Freddy!" I muttered, clutching tight at the material initially hanging between my fingers. My eyes were watery from my own arousal, and I couldn't wait to finally be able to feel the emotions that remained unlocked in my heart. My cheeks burnt red. I was so embarrassed that I packed up the box and shoved them under the sheets.Adjusting the belt of my bath robe, I did a short breathing exercise to keep my voice firm.Clutching the knob of the door, I took one last deep breath before yanking it open.I gagged, my chest tightening to the sight in front of me. Not only did I not expect to see Eddy in front of my door by the time of the night, I was too fired up to handle whatever he had come to say.It was ridiculous, but I wondered if he was here because of what I said to him at the stadium, and I feared we might end up doing something we both would regret by morning."Hi, Eddy," my voice

  • SCORNED BY HIM, DESIRED BY THE THREE   A SURPRISE AT NIGHT

LOLAWith my heart hammering hard against my chest, I hurried through the lonely path that led back to the stadium where the rest of the family ought to still be.I was sure practice had ended, and me missing right in that moment wouldn't look too good. The plan was to get there first, and then, Connor could come later.Standing before my father-in-law, all sweaty, my breathing giving away the fact that I had jogged all the way back, I thought of the best response to a question he had not even asked."We had been done for a while now. We were worried," Greg spoke, his eyes scanning every inch of my body in a way that felt rather uncomfortable.Struggling to keep my breathing steady and my shoulders up, I looked from my father-in-law to Eddy — his face was locked in an expression that told me just how much he wanted to say and how he was just waiting for the right time to come at me.Freddy was standing behind them, arms folded across his chest, skin glazed with sweat and his gaze send

  • SCORNED BY HIM, DESIRED BY THE THREE   YOU FOR ME

CONNORI wasn't a hockey person. I loved playing and watching outdoor games, but not hockey. Any other thing can work, not just hockey. Nevertheless, I had travelled to Norway with the Langfords to support Eddy's younger brother's game which was upon request by the director. He had texted me about it, and because Lola was going too, I knew I had to be there.Eddy might be right. I was there because of his wife, but there was a continuation of that truth Eddy didn't bother to add.I was there because I wanted to make sure his wife was protected from him.Through the flight, I had noticed Lola's discomfort, but I didn't get the opportunity to ask her why even until we had to watch skating on the ice. When I became fed up pretending like I was enjoying the practice game, I excused myself and went in search of even greater fun."Miss what?" she asked, the tension in her voice breaking apart."Get here first," I urged, leaning against the closest wall to me."What did you say?" her voice

  • SCORNED BY HIM, DESIRED BY THE THREE   YEARNING FOR MY BROTHER IN-LAW

LOLAI was mostly to myself through the flight, my thoughts everywhere, and my body doing a good job staying calm despite the storm that brewed underneath my skin.It was a long journey. When we touched down at the Norway airport, I was too tired to even think straight, and I felt too sleepy. I couldn't wait to be ushered into our rooms, then take a long hot shower and hide under the blankets, away from the reality I could never actually ever run from. Then, my father in law's words delivered like a blow to my face, "We will watch his practice tonight.""What the heck!" Eddy blurted out, his voice rising above his usual beat."You heard me, Eddy," Mr. Greg shot at him, looking around to make sure nobody had any other objection.Eddy was obviously not comfortable with the plan. He sighed, tugging at his tie uncomfortably as he paced around the space in front of him.Connor, on the other hand, stood at a distance with his hands folded, and his face holding a solid neutral expression.I

  • SCORNED BY HIM, DESIRED BY THE THREE   IT WAS GOING TO BE A LONG NIGHT FOR ME. LOLA

Bulky. Too tight. Top part too revealing. To crown it all, I detested red for clothes, but the fitting assistant had called it "stunning" and Eddy had nodded in agreement. Now, standing in the quiet living room of our home in Malibu in that same dress, my body feeling not like mine, I waited for Ed

  • SCORNED BY HIM, DESIRED BY THE THREE   HARD AND BACK TO REALITY

LOLAI swallowed, closing my eyes to the pain of the moment suddenly ending because of the same thing I had feared.I was back in my room - the room I shared with Eddy, and I was sitting n*ked on the toilet seat, my face pressed hard against my palms when I remembered that I had forgotten my flops

  • SCORNED BY HIM, DESIRED BY THE THREE   I WANT IT MORE

LOLAMy feet hurried across the corridor, past the first room, then the second, and I was standing in front of Eddy's room.My heart was beating faster than it was while I waited for my fate at the breakfast table a while back. Not because I wanted my brother-in-law to touch me again under my husb

  • SCORNED BY HIM, DESIRED BY THE THREE   I COULDN'T STOP MYSELF

LOLAI had been sitting at the table for over fifteen minutes. Alone. The dining room was the kind of large that feels larger when you are the only person in it. I sat at my usual spot - the chair closest to the window that nobody else wanted because the morning light came in at an angle that made
