Selena's POV

Upon hearing my response, the two vetting officers exchanged glances, seeming pleased with how decisive I was.

"There's one more thing we need to tell you beforehand," one of them said, closing the folder in his hands.

He continued solemnly, "Since the research involves classified national information, your current identity records will be erased for now. Your identity and honors will be reinstated once the research is over, along with the appropriate awards."

Then, the other vetting officer added, "If necessary, we can give you more time to get your personal affairs in order."

I lowered my gaze and said calmly, "Thank you, but there's no need for that. I've been an orphan all my life, with nobody to hold me back, so serving my country is my sole wish."

I walked out of the vetting room. They had informed me it would take about two weeks to transfer my records and erase my identity, suggesting I take the opportunity to get some proper rest.

I was heading back to my office when I ran into three people I didn't expect to see at the corner of the hallway—Mom, Dad, and Christian Gunn, my brother. I stopped in my tracks, my heart skipping a beat.

In my previous life, the Gunn family hadn't found me until a month later. I couldn't help but wonder how they had found me so early this time. I quickly lowered my head and pretended not to recognize them, stepping aside to let them pass.

"Selena Gunn!"

A familiar voice called out from behind me.

I froze where I stood, as that was the name I had used for ten years with the Gunn family in my previous life. I turned around and looked directly at Christian. Mom and Dad were standing right behind him, looking at me with complicated expressions.

Christian stepped forward, a strange gleam in his eyes. "You've been reborn too, haven't you, Selena?"

I remained silent, though my heart surged with turmoil. It turned out that they had all been reborn too.

I hadn't even figured out how to respond when Christian's tentative tone gave way to impatience. "It doesn't really matter. We're here today to let you know that you don't belong in the Gunn family, regardless of whether you came back."

He paused momentarily, as if he were worried that I wouldn't understand. "We'd rather have Freya with us than you."

Mom finally broke her silence, pleading with me. "You got to live Freya's life last time, so please just let her have this one, Selena. We'll compensate you however you like, as long as you agree to never come looking for us."

I felt a tight knot twisting in my chest. In my previous life, I hadn't joined the Northwest Initiative, choosing instead to search for the Gunn family—my birth family. I eventually tracked them down with help from the research institute.

On the day they brought me home, Mom held me tight and wept loudly, saying how sorry she was that I had suffered all those years and promising to make it up to me. Christian acted reserved, but he gave me whatever I asked for. Dad didn't speak much, but he always looked at me with genuine affection.

Yet, at this moment, as they stood in front of me, all I saw in their eyes was cold indifference.

I dug my nails into my palm, suppressing the bitter ache rising within me. "I have no idea what you're talking about," I said flatly. "I never planned to claim family ties with the Gunn family as well."

Christian eyed me suspiciously for a moment before his tone eased slightly. "It's for the best if you have no thoughts of claiming kinship with the Gunn family."

He paused briefly before adding, "I can offer you a sum of money—enough to set you up for life—so long as you drop any inappropriate thoughts of joining the family."

I looked at him and smiled faintly. "I don't need it. I'd also like you to know that I'm Selena Lister—not Selena Gunn."

Ignoring their bewildered looks, I quickly walked away. I didn't stop until I was well out of sight, leaning against a wall as my chest tightened so much I could hardly breathe.

I remembered the seawater flooding the cabin in my previous life and how they had struggled to push me onto the only available life ring.

Mom had gently stroked my cheek one last time and said, "We don't owe you anything anymore, Selena."

I'd watched as their figures were slowly submerged in the surging seawater.

I slowly unclenched my fists and exhaled deeply as I thought about how they had sacrificed their lives to cut their ties with me in my previous life.

So in this life, I decided not to cling to them.

Selena's POVI held fast to Professor Leigh's arm and yelled toward the door, "Help! Please help me!"In that instant, the medical staff on base arrived. They lifted Professor Leigh onto a stretcher, and pushed him straight into the infirmary.I stood in the hallway, leaned on the wall, and slumped to the floor, burying my face in my knees. I was thinking about all the tiny clues that I had overlooked. Professor Leigh had been coughing so much lately and barely eating. In my previous life, he had died from a serious illness while working on a confidential project at Northwest Base, without even giving me a chance to say goodbye. I was truly an idiot for not noticing it until now in this life.It was then that the door to the infirmary opened, and the doctor stepped out, removing his mask with a somber expression.I stood up, my legs trembling beneath me, and asked hurriedly, "How did it go?"The doctor hesitated for a couple of seconds, then replied softly, "Professor Leigh's in

Selena's POVI hadn't expected Mom, Dad, and Christian to actually track me down here.Everyone at Northwest Base had to sign an NDA before moving in, and our identities were totally wiped, making us legally dead to the outside world.I was certain that no matter how much pull the Gunn family had, they shouldn't have been able to find me in this remote desert, yet there they were, standing right at the entrance of the base's reception room. Mom had lost a noticeable amount of weight, with silver running through her hair and dark circles under her eyes. Dad stood beside her, looking gaunt and years older. Christian was at the front, visibly shuddering the second he laid eyes on me.Mom instantly burst into tears after seeing me, her voice shaking terribly. "I came for you, Selena! I know I made a mistake back then!"She took a couple of steps toward me to grab my hand, but I took a step back. She instantly stopped crying and froze right where she was.Dad spoke up, his voice hoa

  • Saved in a Shipwreck, Abandoned in Life   Chapter 8

Selena's POVProfessor Leigh and I weren't actually dead. We had kept everyone at the research institute in the dark, faked our deaths, and erased our old identities to officially join the Northwest Initiative. It was a necessary move to keep us from being targeted or used by others. That night, Professor Leigh and I boarded a westbound train. We were the only ones in the carriage. I looked outside the window, where the city lights slowly receded until they disappeared into the night.Upon arriving at the Northwest Base, Professor Leigh and I were promptly assigned to the core laboratory unit inside the underground bunker.Professor Leigh stood at the doorway and smiled at me. "What do you think? Do you feel scared, Selena?"I shook my head, walked over, and placed my hand on the control panel with a smile. "You're kidding, right, Professor Leigh? What's there to be scared of? This is where I belong."From there on out, time seemed to hit fast-forward. The rest of the team and I

Third-Person POVIn the end, the Gunns put Freya through the exact same things they did to Selena in her previous life. Only this time around, they were far more thorough and far more cruel. They didn't just ignore Freya—they let the household staff walk all over her too. Her clothes conveniently ended up in the trash, her breakfast was constantly forgotten, and her room was only cleaned once every three days. When Freya finally snapped and confronted the maids, she was met with their contemptuous looks. "You're just a fake heiress who stole someone else's place. What's wrong with us treating you like this? You caused the real heiress' death, yet you still have the nerve to leech off this family and not leave."Joseph's old business associate dropped by for a visit one day. He couldn't help but lament the whole situation after having a few drinks. "I heard that your biological daughter, the one who grew up away from home, was already a full-fledged researcher despite being so you

Third-Person POVChristian looked up sharply, his eyes bloodshot. "W-What did you just say? You're lying! How could that be? Didn't they say that everyone had been safely evacuated? How could Selena…"He couldn't even finish the sentence. His knees gave out as he watched Daisy crying so hard that she could barely breathe. He stumbled back a couple of steps until his back hit the wall. He slid down against it, collapsed on the floor, and buried his face in his hands. He thought back to what had happened that afternoon. He couldn't help but wonder what would have happened if he had gone after Selena instead of listening to Freya, who told him not to give Selena a ride.As he sat trembling on the floor, two police officers walked over. They stood in front of Christian, and one of the middle-aged police officers removed his hat and said, "You're Christian Gunn, right? After inspecting the scene and verifying their identities, we've confirmed that one of the two researchers who died i

  • Saved in a Shipwreck, Abandoned in Life   Chapter 5

Third-Person POVChristian was completely stunned, as Selena was still inside the research institute. He stumbled out of the car and rushed toward the burning building."You can't go in there!"Two firefighters rushed over from the side and firmly grabbed his arms. "It's too dangerous! The fire isn't out yet!"Christian fought against their grip, his voice cracking as he yelled. "Get off me! Selena is still inside! I have to get to her!" He could only watch the flames raging in front of him as he was held firmly behind the cordon, a wave of regret washing over him. He never would have allowed Selena to return to the research institute if he had known this would happen. He should have driven her himself, or at least spent a little more time with her so that he could protect her at this moment. Instead, he gave in to Freya and let her leave by herself. He wondered if Selena actually looked back when she walked off by herself. Had she been hoping someone would chase after her? He
