Chapter 8

Author: The Awakened
Selena's POV

Professor Leigh and I weren't actually dead. We had kept everyone at the research institute in the dark, faked our deaths, and erased our old identities to officially join the Northwest Initiative. It was a necessary move to keep us from being targeted or used by others.

That night, Professor Leigh and I boarded a westbound train. We were the only ones in the carriage. I looked outside the window, where the city lights slowly receded until they disappeared into the night.

Selena's POVI held fast to Professor Leigh's arm and yelled toward the door, "Help! Please help me!"In that instant, the medical staff on base arrived. They lifted Professor Leigh onto a stretcher, and pushed him straight into the infirmary.I stood in the hallway, leaned on the wall, and slumped to the floor, burying my face in my knees. I was thinking about all the tiny clues that I had overlooked. Professor Leigh had been coughing so much lately and barely eating. In my previous life, he had died from a serious illness while working on a confidential project at Northwest Base, without even giving me a chance to say goodbye. I was truly an idiot for not noticing it until now in this life.It was then that the door to the infirmary opened, and the doctor stepped out, removing his mask with a somber expression.I stood up, my legs trembling beneath me, and asked hurriedly, "How did it go?"The doctor hesitated for a couple of seconds, then replied softly, "Professor Leigh's in

Selena's POVI hadn't expected Mom, Dad, and Christian to actually track me down here.Everyone at Northwest Base had to sign an NDA before moving in, and our identities were totally wiped, making us legally dead to the outside world.I was certain that no matter how much pull the Gunn family had, they shouldn't have been able to find me in this remote desert, yet there they were, standing right at the entrance of the base's reception room. Mom had lost a noticeable amount of weight, with silver running through her hair and dark circles under her eyes. Dad stood beside her, looking gaunt and years older. Christian was at the front, visibly shuddering the second he laid eyes on me.Mom instantly burst into tears after seeing me, her voice shaking terribly. "I came for you, Selena! I know I made a mistake back then!"She took a couple of steps toward me to grab my hand, but I took a step back. She instantly stopped crying and froze right where she was.Dad spoke up, his voice hoa

It was a necessary move to keep us from being targeted or used by others. That night, Professor Leigh and I boarded a westbound train. We were the only ones in the carriage. I looked outside the window, where the city lights slowly receded until they disappeared into the night.Upon arriving at the Northwest Base, Professor Leigh and I were promptly assigned to the core laboratory unit inside the underground bunker.Professor Leigh stood at the doorway and smiled at me. "What do you think? Do you feel scared, Selena?"I shook my head, walked over, and placed my hand on the control panel with a smile. "You're kidding, right, Professor Leigh? What's there to be scared of? This is where I belong."From there on out, time seemed to hit fast-forward. The rest of the team and I

Third-Person POVIn the end, the Gunns put Freya through the exact same things they did to Selena in her previous life. Only this time around, they were far more thorough and far more cruel. They didn't just ignore Freya—they let the household staff walk all over her too. Her clothes conveniently ended up in the trash, her breakfast was constantly forgotten, and her room was only cleaned once every three days. When Freya finally snapped and confronted the maids, she was met with their contemptuous looks. "You're just a fake heiress who stole someone else's place. What's wrong with us treating you like this? You caused the real heiress' death, yet you still have the nerve to leech off this family and not leave."Joseph's old business associate dropped by for a visit one day. He couldn't help but lament the whole situation after having a few drinks. "I heard that your biological daughter, the one who grew up away from home, was already a full-fledged researcher despite being so you

Third-Person POVChristian looked up sharply, his eyes bloodshot. "W-What did you just say? You're lying! How could that be? Didn't they say that everyone had been safely evacuated? How could Selena…"He couldn't even finish the sentence. His knees gave out as he watched Daisy crying so hard that she could barely breathe. He stumbled back a couple of steps until his back hit the wall. He slid down against it, collapsed on the floor, and buried his face in his hands. He thought back to what had happened that afternoon. He couldn't help but wonder what would have happened if he had gone after Selena instead of listening to Freya, who told him not to give Selena a ride.As he sat trembling on the floor, two police officers walked over. They stood in front of Christian, and one of the middle-aged police officers removed his hat and said, "You're Christian Gunn, right? After inspecting the scene and verifying their identities, we've confirmed that one of the two researchers who died i

Third-Person POVChristian was completely stunned, as Selena was still inside the research institute. He stumbled out of the car and rushed toward the burning building."You can't go in there!"Two firefighters rushed over from the side and firmly grabbed his arms. "It's too dangerous! The fire isn't out yet!"Christian fought against their grip, his voice cracking as he yelled. "Get off me! Selena is still inside! I have to get to her!" He could only watch the flames raging in front of him as he was held firmly behind the cordon, a wave of regret washing over him. He never would have allowed Selena to return to the research institute if he had known this would happen. He should have driven her himself, or at least spent a little more time with her so that he could protect her at this moment. Instead, he gave in to Freya and let her leave by herself. He wondered if Selena actually looked back when she walked off by herself. Had she been hoping someone would chase after her? He
