Hazel’s P.O.V. (Continued)

“Good morning, Cody.” I greeted him hurriedly while standing up.

“You need to come to the hospital like right now, Hazel.” My heart skipped a few beats in a row when I felt the urgency and panic in his voice.

Before I could even think, I was already running.

“What happened, Cody? Is my mom okay?” I asked him anxiously while running.

“Don’t ask me anything, Hazel. Just came here as quickly as possible.” He urged; the urgency and panic increased in his voice.

He hung up right after that, leaving me scared.

With all my strength, I ran….

I had no money with me, no shoes, but determination to reach the hospital as soon as possible.

To my surprise, Xyla forced her strength into my legs, increasing my speed.

She was still blocking me. So, I couldn’t talk to her, but I really wanted her to talk to me now.

I must look like a madwoman, running barefoot as if an army of ghosts is behind me.

After that attack, I was so traumatized that I didn’t come out from my hidden place. For two nights and three days, I stayed there, curled up, semiconscious.

It was Mary who found me. Her sister was mated to someone in my pack, and she came there after getting the news of the attack. She is also the only one who knew my secret.

She took me in and took me to her pack and adopted me. She was a poor omega, and her mate was already dead.

She found her motivation to live in me, and I was really grateful for her.

Even though the world was harsh on me, she was my shelter, my safety net, and the only person who loved and cared for me genuinely.

“Mom.” I screamed in panic when I saw my mother lying in one corner of the hospital lobby instead of in her bed.

She slowly opened her eyes, and I felt as if the whole world had crashed on me.

A lone tear escaped from her eyes when she saw me, lying on the cold floor like a lifeless doll.

“Hazel.” She whimpered when I pulled her up into my embrace. She sobbed on my chest, helpless and in so much pain.

Xyla also surfaced at the same time and howled in pain and despair because of our mother’s current situation.

“Why are you here, Mom? What’s going on?” I asked in a shaky voice, completely dumbfounded by what was happening to us.

She didn’t reply but sobbed harder.

“Hazel.” I looked up and saw Cody coming towards me. He looked torn and helpless.

“What happened, Cody? Why is she here?” I asked him hurriedly, a sense of foreboding filling my heart.

I tightened my grip on my mother’s body, who was now trembling in my embrace. In the past two years, her mental health also deteriorated. She behaved like a scared child in extreme situations.

“They revoked her medical grant and instructed her immediate discharge.” He told me, and I narrowed my eyes in confusion.

“It’s Luna Naisha. As the future Luna, she took over the trust and cancelled your mother’s medical aid. Reason – your mother is faking her mental condition.”

I couldn’t tell how badly I wanted to kill Naisha when I heard Cody.

He was also pissed, but he was helpless in this matter.

I felt my chest squeeze, but I suppressed my pain as my mother was still holding me tightly.

“And what’s wrong with you? You looked like a wreck.” He asked me worriedly.

“I need to see Naisha.” I mumbled in a daze; my mind was in chaos.

My mom needed constant medical attention, and without two costly medicines, she will not be able to survive for more than two days.

“I think she deliberately targeted you again, Hazel. What’s her deal, huh? Why does she always target you?” Cody asked while grumbling hard, but I knew that he was worried about me.

I met Cody Nickelwood three years ago when I was in the Night Wood Pack. He was a visiting doctor there when I took my mother to the ER for the first time.

Since that day, he helped me with Mom in every possible way, becoming my only friend in the process.

He accepted being a doctor here because of Mom.

“I know, Cody, but do I have any other choice?” I asked him in a cracked voice, filled with my own helplessness and despair.

He looked troubled and angry but didn’t say a word.

“Ca….n you let her stay somewhere safe? I need to find Naisha.” I requested him in the same cracked voice.

The hospital was bustling with people. I could see their gazes on us, but I didn’t dare see their faces.

I knew that all I would see is mockery, contempt, and disgust.

So, what’s the use of giving them even a second of your life?

“I am taking her to my room. She will be comfortable there.” He replied to me, and I nodded in response.

“Mom…. Get up.” I whispered to my mother, who was holding me tightly.

“It’s hurting, Hazel.” She whimpered that it felt like a sharp dagger piercing my heart.

“Let me take her.” Cody suggested in a low and concerned voice. I just nodded, sniffed lightly, and let him carry Mom.

He took Mom in bridal style, holding her securely. I grabbed everything lying on the floor and stuffed them in the cloth bag my mother used to keep her things.

I kept my eyes low, avoiding everyone, but the restlessness and a sense of foreboding had already engulfed my heart completely.

Naisha deliberately targeted my mother.

I didn’t know why she was still unhappy with me. She got what she wanted.

She is now the Luna of the pack. She had Keith and the power coming with the Luna title.

What else did she want from me?

“You know that I am not a member of this pack.” I looked at Cody absentmindedly when he spoke to me.

“I came here because I wanted to help your mom, and it was my choice.” He continued, and I just listened to him in the same daze.

“We are friends, and honestly speaking, I am done with watching your humiliation every day when you did nothing wrong.” I tried to smile but couldn’t.

Because I was also fed up with that, but I don’t have any other choice. The royal pack gave me the ultimatum that if this pack kicks me and my mother out, we will have no other choice but to go rogue.

Because of my mother’s health conditions and me being wolf-less, three packs had already kicked us out in the past five years.

I came to this pack after my mother got financial help for her treatment from that charitable trust.

“I know, Cody, and trust me. If I get any way out of this place and get help for Mom’s treatment by any means, I will leave this pack right away. But.” I replied to him absentmindedly but paused before completing what I wanted to say with a sigh, filled with my helplessness and despair.

Ever since Keith and Naisha found out about the mate bond between me and Keith, they didn't let anyone give a stable job to me. I also did odd jobs here and there to keep my life running, but I had enough of this now.

I stopped, making him stop too.

“Take care of her until I come back, Cody.” I spoke to him resolutely and gave the bag to him too.

He looked worried, but I gave a tight smile to him before moving away.

My heart clenched when I heard my mother’s helpless and painful whimper behind me.

I clenched my fists tightly but didn’t stop.

“Hazel.” I stopped when Cody suddenly called me aloud.

“Don’t let her bully you. I will definitely find a way to help both of you.” He yelled when I didn’t look back at him.

“Thanks, Cody.” I thanked him sincerely without looking in their direction and started walking again. My shoulders were straight and tense, but I was resolute to find a way at any cost.
