Amy’s POV

"Carlos," Antonio called out, "you know I don’t like being kept in the dark. Thirty seconds. Explain exactly what’s going on."

I set my fingers to tap anxiously across the counter, waiting for Carlos to confess his grand plan of getting rid of the boss. He had made his way here to see the results, so I traced his face to see every reaction, my fingers moving faster. I couldn't have predicted what happened next. He lunged for me, grabbing my arm and sinking his fingers so deep that it left imprints.

"Boss, I told you she was not to be trusted!" He pointed to Antonio's now-empty glass. "I gave her a fake poisonous pill. I made promises that I would help her escape if she made sure you ingested it."

Antonio’s mask cracked for a second, and then the look of one of the most dangerous mobsters in the city was back—cold, untouchable, and unreadable. With just a tilt of his head, he told Carlos to continue.
