Kylie’s POV

I exhaled shakily, clutching the cap lower over my face as I crept toward the back gate. My steps were fast, yet silent. It didn’t take long to approach it, and my heart was drumming impossibly hard as I neared. There was no guard around since it was meant to be a secretive one, so I was reassured. The faint creak of the hinges when I pushed the little door open made me wince, but it didn’t echo far.

Then a voice slurred out of the darkness.

“Oi… you.”

My entire body froze as a hand grabbed my shoulder, squeezing tightly.

“Why is your heart beating so fast, uhhh?”

My eyes widened and I swallowed hard, whipping my head back.

“What?” The faint tremble in my voice betrayed me, and I dug my nails into my palm from fear. But it didn't take long for me to catch myself. I cleared my throat, trying to sound as firm and casual as I could. “You appeared out of nowhere,” I commented lightly, meeting his gaze—then went still when I noticed the bright red pupils.
