Darian’s Pov

I sat alone in my dark, quiet study long after my mother, Octavia, had left the room. The heavy oak door was shut tight, but the words we had just spoken kept ringing inside my head like a loud church bell.

A surrogate. Mirelle Saye. My mind raced in circles, trying to justify everything. I told myself I was being practical. I told myself that running a multi-billion-dollar empire like Rooke Global meant making hard, cold choices. I convinced myself that finding another heir through Mirelle was just a business decision to protect our legacy, to ensure that my eight-year-old daughter, Lyra, would always have a strong, secure foundation under her feet.

I leaned back in my leather chair and rubbed my tired eyes, trying to push away the heavy guilt that clawed at my chest. I didn't want to hurt Elara. I never wanted to hurt her.

Eight years ago, I had fallen completely in love with Elara the moment I saw her. She wasn't born into high society like the women my mother wanted me to marry; she was sweet, gentle, and possessed a quiet warmth that melted the cold walls around my heart.

I thought that by giving her a mansion filled with expensive silk curtains, custom furniture, and unlimited credit cards, I was showing her how much I cherished her. I truly believed that financial security and luxury were the highest forms of love a man could offer his wife.

How foolish I was. I never understood why she always looked so sad, sitting alone at the end of our massive dining table. Whenever my mother criticized her clothing, her cooking, or her ordinary background, I stayed quiet because I thought keeping the peace was the mature thing to do. My mother had raised me after my father died; she was strong, she was loud, and I always trusted that she wanted what was best for our family. I never realized that my silence was a slow poison, slowly bleeding the life out of the woman I loved.

Suddenly, the heavy study door flew open with a loud bang, crashing against the wooden wall.

I jumped in my chair, looking up sharply. Elara stood in the doorway, and the sight of her completely stopped my breath. She looked like a ghost. Her face was stark white, her eyes were red and swollen from crying, and her whole body was shaking so hard she looked like she might shatter into dust right there on the floor.

"Elara?" I stammered, standing up quickly from my desk, sudden panic flaring up inside my chest. "What is going on? Why are you up? What are you doing in here?"

"Did you mean it, Darian?" Elara asked. Her voice didn't sound like her own. It was cold, flat, and hollow, stripped of all the gentle warmth I used to take for granted. "Were you and your mother just in here talking about Mirelle? Talking about getting a surrogate to replace me?"

I opened my mouth to speak, but the words caught in my throat. Seeing her standing there looking so broken made my stomach twist into a knot. But before I could form an explanation, my mother's words echoed in the back of my mind. Elara is overly dramatic, Darian. She lacks the strength to handle reality.

"Elara, please, calm down," I said, holding my hands up defensively as I walked around the desk toward her. "You are not thinking clearly. This isn't about replacing you. It's about protecting the future of the Rooke family. My mother is right—we need to think about Lyra and the empire. Mirelle is just a business arrangement, a medical option. It doesn't change what we have."

"What we have?" Elara let out a harsh, broken laugh that sounded nothing like her. It was a sound filled with pure agony. "Darian, we have nothing. We haven't had anything for years. You haven't looked at me as a wife in as long as I can remember. You let your mother tear me apart every single day, and you sit there hiding behind your corporate phone!"

"That is not true," I argued, my own frustration rising because she refused to see my side, refused to understand the heavy burdens I carried for our family. "I give you everything you could ever ask for! You live in luxury, you never have to worry about money, and you have a comfortable life. Why are you always making things so difficult? Why can't you just be strong for once, like my mother says?"

The moment those words left my mouth, I instantly regretted them. I saw the last remaining light in Elara’s eyes die completely.

She stopped shaking. Her posture straightened up, and a terrifying, bone-chilling calm washed over her face. She looked at me not with anger, but with a deep, pitying sorrow that felt worse than a punch to the gut.

"Strong," Elara whispered, a bitter smile touching the corners of her pale lips. "You keep talking about strength, Darian. But you don't even know what real strength is. You think money buys love. You think silence keeps the peace. Well, I have news for you. I went to the doctor today."

I blinked, confused by the sudden change in topic. "What? What does a doctor have to do with this?"

"I am dying, Darian," she said clearly, the words dropping into the quiet room like heavy stones falling into water. "I have an advanced illness. The doctor told me I only have six months left to live."

A cold sweat broke out across the back of my neck. My heart skipped a violent beat. "What? No. That... that's impossible. You're just stressed. Mother said you exaggerate your health for attention; you're just—"

"If you truly believed me," Elara interrupted, stepping closer, her dark eyes staring straight into my soul, "if you honestly believed that I was standing here dying of a terminal illness with only six months left on this earth... would you still choose Mirelle? Would you still go ahead with the surrogate?"

The room went dead silent. I could hear the faint ticking of the grandfather clock in the hallway. My mind raced in a million different directions. Part of me wanted to pull her into my arms, to tell her none of it mattered, that she was my wife and I loved her above everything else.

But my lifelong habit of cold logic, fueled by my mother's constant warnings about Elara's supposed fragility, locked my tongue in place. I hesitated. Just for three seconds. But in a marriage, three seconds of hesitation is a lifetime of betrayal.

I looked at her, trapped by my own fear and my inability to defy my family, and I gave the most responsible, practical answer I could think of to save our legacy.

"Elara... we have to be realistic about Lyra's future," I muttered, my voice barely above a whisper. "We have to plan..."

Elara didn't scream. She didn't cry. She just nodded slowly, as if she had expected nothing less from me. She turned around on her heel, her small bag clutched tightly in her hand, and began walking down the dimly lit hallway toward the front doors.

Panic suddenly gripped my chest, ice-cold and sharp. I took a step forward, reaching out a hand toward her retreating figure.

"Elara, wait! Where are you going? Let's talk about this!" I called out, my voice cracking with a sudden, overwhelming terror.

She paused at the end of the hall, not even turning her head back to look at me one last time.

"You didn’t lose me today, Darian," Elara said softly into the empty corridor, her voice echoing in the vast, cold mansion. "You lost me every time you chose to stay silent."

Elara's Pov The man standing in the doorway of my childhood bedroom didn't look like a billionaire emperor who commanded powerful global industries. I had imagined meeting my biological father a hundred times since Kael first showed me that faded photograph in the hospital. But none of those daydreams prepared me for the real Alaric Veyne. He stood there with tear-filled eyes, his posture hesitant and cautious, looking like a man who had spent twenty-four years rehearsing every single word he wanted to say, terrified that saying the wrong thing might make me run away. He didn't rush across the room. He didn't demand a hug or act like he owned me. Instead, he kept his hands resting quietly at his sides, his gaze warm and aching as he looked down at me sitting on the edge of the bed. "May I come in, little one," he asked softly, his voice thick with emotion, "or do I still have to ask permission to see my own daughter?" A lump formed in my throat, choking off any words I tried to

Elara’s Pov Those faded words, written on my very first birthday after I was torn away from my family, echoed inside my head like a gentle song. They broke the last hard wall I had built around my heart. For twenty-four years, I had believed I was an unwanted orphan, dropped on a doorstep because nobody cared. But looking at that handwriting, I finally understood the truth. I was wanted. I was loved. And someone had spent decades praying for the day I would come back. That single note changed everything. After Silas checked my vitals and confirmed my ribs were finally healing properly, I told Kael I was ready. I agreed to visit the Veyne estate—not to move in permanently, and not because I felt forced, but simply because my heart needed to see where that love lived. Kael drove me in a discreet, quiet car, while Ronan and Silas went ahead to make sure the house wouldn't turn my arrival into a loud, overwhelming media event. When the massive iron gates of the estate slowly swung open

Elara’s Pov The phone in my hand stopped vibrating, the screen fading to black as Darian's call went to voicemail, but the cold weight of it stayed right in the center of my chest. Before my racing heart could slow down, the hospital door clicked open, and Kael walked inside. One look at my face was all it took for him to understand. He didn't ask who was calling, but the hard, defensive line of his shoulders told me he already knew. "I saw the screen," Kael said softly, walking over to stand beside my bed. His voice wasn't angry, just steady and protective. "Do you want me to have security block his number? Do you want him blocked from ever finding this place?" I looked down at the dark phone, shaking my head slowly. "No, Kael. Not yet. I... I know I'll have to speak to Darian eventually. Especially because of Lyra. I can't just pretend my daughter doesn't exist. But I am not ready. I don't want him to know where I am, I don't want him showing up here, and I certainly don't want

Darian’s Pov The phone in my hand felt heavy, vibrating against my palm. I stared at the screen, watching Elara's name flash over and over again, but my thumb wouldn't move to press the answer button. For days, I had tried to convince myself that she was just being dramatic. I had told myself that she simply needed a few days away from the massive, suffocating halls of the Rooke mansion to calm down. But reality had slowly stripped away every single excuse I had hidden behind. The walk-in closet was missing her basic clothes and her worn leather suitcase. The untouched, folded letter sat right beside Lyra’s bedside lamp. And the heavy, terrified crying in my daughter's voice made it impossible to keep pretending everything was under control. It was Lyra who had found the letter first. She had walked into my study hours after Elara left, holding the small piece of folded paper with trembling hands. “Daddy, why did Mommy write goodbye?” she had asked, her big eyes swimming with tear

Elara’s Pov I stared at the photograph of my little girl on the phone screen until the pixels blurred behind a fresh wall of tears. The text message had opened up a wound I thought I had locked away when I drove away into that stormy night. While the Veyne family was celebrating the miraculous return of their lost daughter, I was a mother who had left her own child behind in a cold, massive mansion where nobody protected her. I had spent eight years letting Octavia tear down my confidence, letting Darian ignore my tears, and in the end, I had run away to save my own broken heart—leaving Lyra right in the middle of that toxic house. The door clicked open softly, and Kael stepped inside, his sharp eyes instantly catching the panic written all over my face. He crossed the room in two long strides, his expression turning tight with worry. "Elara? What's wrong? Are you in pain?" Kael asked, his deep voice laced with immediate protection. "I need to know if she's okay," I choked out, h

Elara’s Pov Seraphina let out a loud, broken sob, her hands flying up to cover her face as tears streamed down her cheeks. Ronan immediately stepped forward and pulled her into a tight, protective embrace, resting his chin on top of her head while his own eyes shone bright with unshed tears. Over by the window, Kael stood completely still. His jaw was clenched so hard I thought his teeth might break, and his broad shoulders shook slightly as he struggled to contain the emotions he had spent twenty-four years burying beneath his cold security duties. Silas stepped closer to the bed, holding out the paperwork gently. He explained the results in a calm, patient voice, making sure I understood every single detail. He told me that the DNA match was one hundred percent certain, connecting our bloodlines beyond any shadow of a doubt. I stared down at the printed report, my finger slowly tracing the ink lines. I wanted to feel like a daughter. I wanted to feel like a sister. But staring at
