Chapter 27

Kirk's pov

The morning sun streamed through the tall French doors of the Paris apartment, casting sharp geometric patterns across the polished hardwood floors.

Jet lag was still pounding behind my eyes, but the heavy fog of yesterday's grief had been pushed somewhere into the back of my mind. At least for now. There was too much to do, and too much riding on today for me to sit around drowning in my thoughts.

Today was the real test.

Lisa was already up, moving around the kitchen wi

  • TWO BROTHERS, ONE NIGHT: WHOSE HEIR?   Accepting a lie

Chapter 28Kirk's pov I turned my head slightly to look at her.In the soft lighting, she looked genuinely happy. There was something almost disarming about the way she smiled at me, as though everything she had worked for was finally falling into place. She had fought for me. She had brought me to Paris, arranged my accommodation, helped me establish my business, and stood beside me while everything back in America was falling apart. She was offering me a fresh start, a partner who wanted to be with me, and a future that seemed full of possibilities."Lisa..." I began, but the words trailed off before I could finish."Don't say anything."She cut me off gently. Then she moved closer, swinging her legs over mine until she was straddling my hips. Her green eyes held mine, and there was an intensity in them that made it difficult to look away."Just let me be happy tonight. I've missed you, Kirk. God, I've missed you so much."Before I could find the words to respond, she leaned forwar

At least for now. There was too much to do, and too much riding on today for me to sit around drowning in my thoughts.Today was the real test.Lisa was already up, moving around the kitchen with the sharp click of her heels and an energy that seemed to fill every corner of the apartment. She wore a tailored charcoal blazer over a crisp silk blouse, looking every bit like the confident, well-connected European talent scout she had always been."Drink your espresso, Kirk."She slid a small white porcelain cup across the marble island toward me."The investors are old-school Parisians. They don't just buy blueprints; they buy the person standing in front of them. You need to look sharp

  • TWO BROTHERS, ONE NIGHT: WHOSE HEIR?   Just you and me

Chapter 26Kirk's pov She reached for me, her fingers brushing gently against my arm before sliding down to rest on my chest. It was supposed to be a comforting touch. An intimate one. An invitation to let my guard down and enjoy the moment with her.But the instant her fingers touched my shirt, something inside me recoiled.A strange jolt ran through my nerves, and before I could stop it, my mind flashed back to another kitchen, on another continent. I saw a woman with wild red hair and terrified blue eyes, crying herself to sleep on a kitchen floor.Stacy.I gently caught Lisa's wrist and moved back.Lifting my wine glass, I took another sip and turned toward the window, hoping the movement would seem natural. Her brows raised, seeming surprised. Well I didn't know if she could read the room, but I had to say something. Just anything to cover up."I'm just... really tired from the flight, Lisa," I said, keeping my back to her so she wouldn't notice the guilt crossing my face. "The

Chapter 25Kirk's pov The steady hum of the Boeing 777's engines vibrated through the plastic frame of the window beside me. It was a dull, rhythmic sound, almost matching the heavy thudding in my chest.I stared through the curved glass as the patchwork of green fields below gradually tilted out of sight. California grew smaller and smaller until it disappeared beneath a thick blanket of white clouds.Sacramento was gone. The courthouse. The glass-and-steel fortress on the hill. My arrogant brother. The suffocating weight of a family that measured people by stock options, bloodlines, and what they could bring to the table. All of it was slipping into the past.I was six miles above the earth, flying across the Atlantic Ocean toward Europe at five hundred miles per hour. You would think running away to Paris would feel like winning a prize. For months, ever since I realised I wanted nothing to do with RealTech or my father's corporate throne, building my own estate management firm in

  • TWO BROTHERS, ONE NIGHT: WHOSE HEIR?   Never loved

Chapter 24Arnold's Pov The morning sun was already shining brightly across the front steps of my glass-and-steel house.I stood in the entryway with a cup of black coffee in my hand, looking like a man who hadn't slept in days. My head was pounding, and the events of the previous night kept running through my mind. I'd spent most of the night trying to figure out where Stacy could have gone, making calls, sending my investigators around the city, and doing everything possible to find her before my parents got wind of what had happened. The front door was still unlocked. I'd forgotten to lock it the previous night in my rush to get out of the house after discovering she was missing.I took another sip of coffee, trying to shake off the exhaustion.Suddenly, the sound of hurried footsteps came from the porch.I froze. My first thought was Stacy.Did she come back? Did she finally realize how foolish it was to run away?I quickly placed my coffee mug on the console table and headed fo

  • TWO BROTHERS, ONE NIGHT: WHOSE HEIR?   She's not your property

Chapter 23Arnold's Pov The golden sun was slowly disappearing behind the Sacramento skyline by the time I finally shut down my office computer and locked my desk.I grabbed my briefcase, straightened my jacket, and headed towards the private elevators. The events of the afternoon still lingered somewhere in the back of my mind. Stacy walking in on Lisa and me, the look on her face, the way she’d ran out without giving me a chance to explain. For a while, I'd been furious with myself. Not because I'd been caught cheating again, but because I'd allowed something so careless to threaten the carefully arranged plans I'd spent months putting together.I'd spent the better part of the afternoon worrying about what she might do next. Would she tell my parents? Would she try to use what she'd seen against me? Would she make another attempt to leave? But the more I thought about it, the more I realized there was little she could actually do.She was my wife now. The marriage was legal, and n
