“Fuck. You’re here again?!”

That was how he greeted me the moment I stepped into his house again.

“My gas stove ran out. I can’t cook,” I lied.

I made my way to the dining area. The table was already set, and it felt like I’d interrupted his meal.

“Great. You’re having breakfast as well. Perfect timing, right?”

“Are you going to eat here?” he asked.

“I can’t cook breakfast at my place. Why? Is that not allowed?”

“Totally isn’t,” he replied immediately.

Wow. What an honest man.

“You really are heartless. I can’t go to work starving.”

“As if I care. Just order food online and stop bothering my supposedly peaceful breakfast.”

“The delivery will take too long. I might be late for work.”

“Then stop by some restaurants before you go to work.”

I rolled my eyes and groaned. “As if the service will be that fast.”

“You really won’t run out of excuses, will you?”

“And you really won’t stop being so grumpy, will you?” I shot back. “God, good thing I have a lot of patience for you.”

He had no choice but to sit down as well when I took the seat across from him. There were three dishes on the table, none of which looked familiar to me. How would I know? I stick to eggs or frozen meals for breakfast since they’re the easiest and quickest to cook.

I wasn’t surprised that the food was delicious. He’s a chef, after all. He owns three restaurants with almost twenty branches in total.

“Your cooking is chef’s kiss. It makes me want to visit one of your restaurants and try everything on the menu. I bet everything tastes good.”

“You’ve never been to any of my restaurants?” he asked. “I mean, you claim that you like me, yet you haven’t even eaten at one of my places. I honestly wonder if you really like me…” he said meaningfully, as if catching me out.

“Oh,” I whispered. I shook my head and chewed the food in my mouth before speaking. “I’m always on a diet, you know.”

“A diet for what?”

“For my figure, obviously.”

“You’re already thin.”

“Correction, it’s sexy. Duh,” I said smugly.

He murmured something, but I didn’t catch it. I didn’t pay any more attention because I was too busy eating.

“Thanks again. I’m so full,” I said when we finished. I rubbed my stomach to show how satisfied I was.

“As if I had a choice.” He cleared the plates and took them to the sink. I followed him.

I chuckled. “Too bad you didn’t.”

I went back to my house to shower and get dressed for work. I even saw the burnt eggs and bacon on the table that I had cooked earlier. I really wasn’t a great cook.

I put on light makeup, grabbed my bag and car keys, and headed out. I saw Xerces outside his house, already on his way to work. He was wearing semi-formal clothes.

“Drive safe!” I yelled. I winked at him before hopping into my car.

I started the engine. Just as I was about to pull out, my phone rang. I reached into my bag and answered.

“What’s up?” I asked.

“I have some news,” Elizabeth said on the line.

“Is it good or bad?”

I leaned back in the seat. I saw Xerces’s car revving up.

“Unfortunately, it’s bad.”

I rolled my eyes and sighed. “Really? This early, Elizabeth?”

“But I know you’ll want to know. And, uh, you’ll hate it at the same time.”

“Fine. Spill it.”

“Are you still mutual friends with your asshole ex on your social media accounts?”

Her words grabbed my attention. “What about him?”

“Check his I*******m story. Now.”

I did what she had told me. I opened the app and looked up his account. We were still following each other, but I muted him. I didn’t want them thinking I was too bothered by what they did. I’d never let them get that satisfaction from me, especially my sister.

I checked his story and saw a photo from the opening night of his new bar downtown. I remembered how he used to tell me it was his dream to open his own place. He couldn’t do it back then because his parents wouldn’t approve—they wanted him to focus on the family business after Xerces backed out of his responsibilities and chose his own path.

I didn’t know he’d already achieved his long-time dream. He must be very happy now.

I tapped the screen to see the next slide, and it immediately ruined my day. It was a close-friends story: a photo of him and Ariella, my sister, hugging.

My grip tightened on the phone. Fuck. Jealousy hit me all at once.

“You tell me, babe. Are you really over him now?” Elizabeth said.

“Damn you.”

“Chill. I didn’t mean to ruin your day. But I also know you’re still not over your ex. So what now? Are you just going to let them be happy together while you—what? Keep drowning in your own misery?”

“That would never happen,” I said through gritted teeth.

I’m going to get even. I know he still loves me. If he ever finds out there’s something going on between me and his brother, he’ll definitely lose it.

I’ll make him come back to me, crawling if he has to. He’ll beg me someday to take him back. I’ll make sure of it.

  • Tempting My Ex’s Brother    Chapter 27

As a child, I was in a hurry to grow up. I thought adulthood meant freedom. Funny how things turned out. Now, all I want is to be that little girl again—the one whose biggest dilemma was choosing clothes for her Barbie dolls. I’ve always heard how much adulthood sucks, but you will never really understand how exhausting it is until you experience it yourself. Sometimes, I honestly wish I could crawl back into my mother’s womb and start over.Money is great, but so is having a will to live. At this point, I think I need a full year off just to romanticize my life again.“Jesus, it’s freakin’ hot,” Lana grumbled. “I’m still alive, but I swear this is what hell must feel like.”“Consider it an early orientation. You still have time to repent,” Elizabeth teased with a grin.“Shut up. Stop talking about yourself.”“Oh, please. With a list of sins as long as yours, I wouldn’t be so confident if I were you.”I shook my head wh

“Thank God you’re here,” I said the moment he stepped inside his house.Xerces froze at the sight of me sitting comfortably on his couch as if I belonged there. His expression immediately shifted to shock.“How did you even get in here?”I tilted my head slightly toward the window behind him. The glass was broken.“I came through there,” I said simply. His jaw literally dropped. A string of curses slipped out under his breath as he turned back to me, eyes blazing.“What did you do?!”“Don’t worry, I’ll pay for the damages.”His jaw clenched even harder. “Why do you always bring trouble into my house?” he muttered through gritted teeth, walking closer until he stood right in front of me.He dropped his briefcase on the small table with a loud thud and placed both hands on his hips.“I need to ask you something,” I said before he could continue his rant.“How urgent is it that you had to

As I pulled up in front of Xerces’s house, I stepped out of the car and walked toward his front door. I knocked once, then twice, but there was no response. I pressed the doorbell several times after that, yet the house remained quiet. With no other choice, I headed straight to my house and took a quick shower instead. After getting dressed, I made my way to my bedroom balcony, where I could see the street clearly. His favorite car wasn’t parked in his garage, so I knew he wasn’t home yet.The next day, I tried again to talk to him, but it seemed like he hadn’t been home last night. I started getting ready. I chose a simple but classy dress and grabbed Zeus’s number from my bedside table before sending him a message. To: ZeusWhere are we meeting?I’m sorry but I think I’m gonna be late. I’m still finishing a few things.I finished my makeup, setting it lightly with powder while waiting for a reply.Zeus: No wo

“Morning,” I greeted Xerces the next day.Like usual, he was already in the kitchen making breakfast.“Hmm,” he responded with a short nod.He turned off the stove after finishing whatever he was cooking. I settled onto one of the stools and quietly watched him prepare the plates.“By the way, thank you,” I said, breaking the silence between us.“I had no choice.”“You did. You just chose to be kind.”“I’m not kind.”“I didn’t say you are,” I pointed out with a grin. “But you did something good. And doing one good deed doesn’t automatically make you a kind person. But still…”I honestly believe he is a good man underneath all that attitude. I just wanted to tease him. And judging by the way his brows immediately knitted together, I’d say it worked.***“Good morning, Doc,” Xena greeted the moment I walked into the clinic.“Morning.” I smiled at her briefly before placing my bag down. “How many appointments do we have today?”“Eleven so far. First patient’s at 9:30.”“Okay. Just call m

It was already past midnight when we left the party. I groaned as I sank comfortably into the passenger seat of Xerces’s car, my heels finally getting a break.“Your seatbelt,” he reminded me without looking at me.I let out a small laugh after realizing I still hadn’t buckled up. “Yeah, yeah. Got it.”The engine started, and soon enough, the car pulled away from the street.“That was a night,” I murmured, letting my head fall against the headrest. My eyes slipped shut as exhaustion slowly crept in.“You’re wasted.”I nodded lazily. “Had too much fun.”He scoffed. “You’ve been drinking almost every day. You seriously think you’re gonna make it to your thirties without getting ill?”“Hey, that’s such an exaggeration,” I complained, turning my head toward him.“Is it?”“Yes,” I insisted. Then, after a short pause, I added, “Well, not every day.”“Tell that to yourself.”“I don’t even drink every day,” I told myself, just like he told me to.He snorted. For a moment, only the low hum of

I was the first to end the conversation when more than half an hour had passed and Xerces still hadn’t returned. I stood up and started looking for him.He wouldn’t just leave me, would he?I went inside Apollo’s house. Some guests had already moved indoors. I scanned the area, weaving through small groups of people. The place wasn’t crowded, yet I couldn’t spot him anywhere. Where the hell did he go?I stepped out into the front yard to check if he had already left. Seeing his car still parked nearby, I relaxed.I was about to head back in when someone called my name.“Ruelle?”I turned toward the voice. It was dark, but I could make out a figure leaning against the wall. The smell of smoke hit me, making me instinctively cover my nose as he took a drag.He pushed himself off the wall and slowly walked over to me. When the light finally hit his face, I got a clear look at him.“Looking for someone?” he asked.
