THE WOMAN HE LOST

Chapter 10

The red moon hung over the forest like a warning.

Elena stood among the ancient trees, one hand resting on her swollen belly. Around her, warriors from the different werewolf packs waited for her next move. Only hours earlier, they had come to capture her. Now, they watched her as though she were the most powerful creature alive.

But Elena wasn't thinking about power.

She was thinking about her baby.

"What happens now?" she asked Seraphine.

The older woman looked toward the moon.

"The council has fallen. Darius can no longer command the packs, and the truth about the Moon Keepers will no longer remain buried. But some wolves will resist the changes you've started."

"Let them resist," Elena replied. "I won't spend my life fighting people who are afraid of a child."

A sudden pain tightened across her abdomen.

Elena gasped and gripped the nearest tree.

Adrian, who had been standing several steps away, rushed toward her.

"Elena!"

"Don't just stand there!" Seraphine ordered. "We need to get her medical attention immediately."

Adrian caught Elena as her knees weakened.

For a moment, she leaned against him, too exhausted to push him away.

"Please," she whispered. "I need my baby to be safe."

Adrian's expression crumbled.

"I know. We'll get you help."

This time, he made no promises about destiny, the mate bond, or their future together. He simply carried her toward the waiting vehicle while Seraphine summoned the healer.

For once, Adrian understood that the moment wasn't about him.

It was about Elena and the child he had once failed to protect.

---

Hours passed before the medical team allowed Adrian to see Elena.

He found her resting in bed, pale and exhausted. She had received medical attention and was being monitored closely.

"How are you feeling?" he asked softly.

"Tired."

"And the baby?"

"They're monitoring the baby, too. I need rest, and I have to follow their instructions."

Adrian nodded, relieved that she was receiving care.

He wanted to ask whether she still loved him. He wanted to tell her that he had regretted his rejection every day since she left.

But he knew those words would not repair what he had broken.

Instead, he sat in the chair beside her bed.

"I've arranged for your medical expenses to be covered," he said. "And I'll continue providing for our child. You won't have to beg me for anything."

Elena turned her head toward him.

"Providing for your child isn't a gift, Adrian. It's your responsibility."

"I know."

"And I don't want money to become a reason for you to control my decisions."

"It won't."

She studied him carefully, searching for the arrogance she had once mistaken for strength.

For the first time, he seemed to understand that she was not something he could claim simply because the Moon had connected them.

"There's something I need to tell you," Elena said.

Adrian straightened.

"I'm listening."

"I loved you. I loved you enough to believe that, no matter what happened, you would stand beside me."

He lowered his eyes.

"When you rejected me, I wasn't only losing the man I loved. I was losing the future I had imagined. I had to face my pregnancy, my fears, and my uncertainty while wondering why I hadn't been enough."

"You were always enough," Adrian whispered.

"Then why did you make me feel worthless?"

He had no answer.

Elena continued.

"You don't get to tell me now that I was worthy. You knew I was pregnant, and you still chose to reject me. You had the power to humiliate me, and you used it."

Adrian's eyes filled with tears.

"I was afraid of what the council would do. I thought rejecting you would protect my position and prevent a war."

"You protected your position," Elena replied. "I was the one who paid the price."

He bowed his head.

"I am sorry."

For a long moment, neither of them spoke.

Elena had imagined hearing those words many times. She had imagined feeling relief, perhaps even happiness.

Instead, she felt tired.

His apology could acknowledge the pain he had caused, but it could not return the nights she had cried herself to sleep or erase the fear she had carried into motherhood.

"I hope you become a better man, Adrian," she said. "But I won't be the woman who waits around to see whether you do."

He looked at her.

"Does that mean there's no chance for us?"

Elena took a slow breath.

"There is no us anymore."

The words landed between them with quiet finality.

Adrian looked away, struggling to contain his grief.

He had once believed that losing Elena would be impossible. He had assumed that their mate bond would eventually bring her back, regardless of what he did.

Now he understood that a bond could connect two people without making one person responsible for forgiving the other.

"I understand," he said at last.

Elena looked toward the window.

"Then please let me rest."

Adrian stood.

At the doorway, he stopped and glanced back at the woman he had once called his mate before rejecting her in front of his entire pack.

"I hope you find the happiness I should have given you," he said.

Elena didn't turn around.

"I hope you learn to give someone love without making them suffer for it."

He left quietly.

And this time, Elena did not cry when the door closed.

---

Three months later, the werewolf world had begun to change.

The council's authority had been dismantled, and Darius was facing judgment for his crimes. The surviving council members could no longer make decisions affecting every pack without accountability.

Seraphine testified about the destruction of the Moon Keeper family. She admitted her involvement and accepted the consequences of her actions.

Elena refused the position of High Luna that several Alphas offered her.

"I don't want to replace one ruling council with another," she told them. "If you want a better world, build one where nobody has to kneel simply because someone else was born more powerful."

Instead, she established a sanctuary for women and children who had been abandoned, threatened, or rejected by their packs.

The sanctuary became a place where pregnant women could receive shelter, where children could grow without being treated as curses, and where no woman had to remain with a cruel mate simply because an ancient bond demanded it.

Elena used her knowledge of the Moon Keepers to help protect the sanctuary, but she refused to let prophecy dictate every decision she made.

Her life was no longer a battle to prove that Adrian had made a mistake.

She had better things to do.

And she was finally free to do them.

---

On a quiet morning, sunlight spilled through the windows of Elena's home.

She sat beside the bed, holding her newborn baby close to her chest.

The little one stirred, making a soft sound before settling against her.

Elena smiled.

For months, she had worried about whether she would be strong enough to raise a child without the man she had once imagined spending her life with.

Now, looking into her baby's peaceful face, she understood that strength did not mean never being afraid.

It meant continuing to love, protect, and build a future even when life had not unfolded the way she expected.

A gentle knock sounded at the door.

Her mother entered carrying a small bag of baby clothes.

"How are you both doing?" she asked.

"We're getting stronger every day," Elena replied.

Her mother kissed her forehead.

"You've been through so much."

Elena looked down at her child.

"I thought being rejected by Adrian meant my life had fallen apart. I couldn't see anything beyond that pain."

"And now?"

Elena smiled.

"Now I know my life was never supposed to end with his decision."

Later that afternoon, Adrian arrived at the sanctuary.

He did not walk in as an Alpha demanding an audience. He waited until Elena agreed to see him.

When she appeared, he stood at a respectful distance.

"I came to see the baby," he said. "Only if you're comfortable with that."

Elena studied him before nodding.

"You can meet your child. But we will follow the boundaries I've set, and you will respect them."

"I will."

She allowed him a brief visit.

Adrian held the baby carefully, his face softening as the little one curled a tiny hand around his finger.

For a moment, he looked like a man who had finally found something more precious than power.

"I wish things had been different," he whispered.

Elena heard him, but she did not mistake his regret for a reason to return to him.

"So do I," she answered honestly.

He looked up, hope flickering across his face.

Then she continued.

"But wishing cannot change what happened. We have a child together, and I want us to handle that responsibility with maturity. Beyond that, my life belongs to me."

The hope in his expression faded, replaced by understanding.

"I won't ask you to come back."

"Thank you."

Adrian returned the baby to her arms.

Before leaving, he paused at the doorway.

"Will you ever forgive me?"

Elena considered the question.

"Maybe one day I'll remember what happened without feeling the pain so sharply. But forgiveness, if it comes, won't mean we have to be together again."

He nodded slowly.

For the first time, he accepted that answer without trying to change it.

Then he walked away.

Elena watched him leave, feeling neither triumph nor revenge.

Only peace.

---

That evening, Elena carried her baby into the garden.

The silver moon rose above the sanctuary, casting a gentle glow over the trees. Her mark shimmered faintly on her wrist, but she no longer feared what it meant.

She had once believed that the Moon had chosen Adrian for her and that his rejection had somehow made her less worthy.

Now she understood the truth.

Her power had never depended on being his mate.

Her worth had never depended on being chosen.

And her future had never belonged to him.

She kissed her baby's forehead and whispered, "You will grow up knowing that love should never make you feel worthless. You will know that you deserve respect, kindness, and a life in which you can make your own choices."

A soft breeze passed through the garden.

For a moment, Elena imagined hearing the distant howl of a wolf. It no longer sounded like a warning or a reminder of the life she had lost.

It sounded like freedom.

She turned toward the sanctuary, where women were laughing together and children played beneath the lanterns.

This was the life she had chosen.

Not a throne. Not revenge. Not the approval of an Alpha.

A life where she could protect her child, help others, and wake each morning knowing that no one else held the power to decide her worth.

Somewhere beyond the mountains, Adrian would have to learn to live with his choices.

Elena no longer needed to watch him regret them.

She had a future to build.

And she was finally ready to live it.

CHAPTER EIGHT The silver eyes moved closer. Every warrior in the chamber lowered his head. Even Adrian, the Alpha of Silver Moon, stepped backward. Elena had never seen him afraid. "What is that?" she whispered. "A guardian," Gareth answered, his face pale. A massive white wolf descended the staircase, its silver markings glowing beneath its snow-white fur. Its ancient eyes settled on Elena before the creature slowly knelt before her. Gasps filled the chamber. The wolf spoke directly into her mind. Daughter of the Moon Keeper, I have waited years for your return. Elena's hands trembled. "Who are you?" I am Orion, guardian of your mother's bloodline. She entrusted me with protecting this shrine until her heir returned. "My mother?" Elena's heart ached. "What happened to her?" • The Alpha Rejected His Pregnant Mate   THE SCENT OF BETRAYAL

CHAPTER SIX The Scent of Betrayal The forest swallowed Elena whole. Branches scratched her arms as she pushed through the undergrowth, her breath coming in short, painful bursts. Behind her, the distant howls of the Silver Moon pack faded until all she could hear was the rustling of leaves and the pounding of her own heart. She did not know where she was going. She only knew she could not return. Not to the pack that had watched her humiliation without lifting a finger. Not to the man who had rejected her before everyone, as though the love they had once shared meant nothing. And certainly not to Adrian. Her hand drifted to her stomach. "Don't worry, little one," she whispered. "Mama will protect you." The words sounded brave, but fear gnawed at her insides. She had no food, no shelter, and no idea how far she had wandered. The afternoon sun was already disappearing behind the towering trees, casting long shadows across the forest floor. A sharp pain twisted through her lo

Chapter Five Elena’s POV The kiss beneath the old oak tree changed something between Adrian and me. After that night, I could no longer pretend my feelings were harmless. I had fallen for the Alpha of Silver Moon Pack, a man who stood above everyone else, while I was the wolfless girl most people barely noticed. Yet, whenever Adrian looked at me, I sometimes forgot the difference between us. For a while, I allowed myself to be happy. Then came the night everything changed. Adrian invited me to his private room. Rain tapped against the windows, filling the silence between us as I stood before him, nervous and uncertain. “Are you afraid of me, Elena?” he asked. I shook my head. “No.” “Then why are you looking at me as if you want to run away?” I told him I was afraid that one day he would wake up and remember that I was wolfless. He told me he didn't want to lose what we had found. When he kissed me, I kissed him back. That night, we chose to be together. It was a privat
