It’s been weeks since Maya left, and nothing feels the same. The house feels colder, emptier. Every morning, I wake up half expecting her soft laugh to echo down the hall—but it never comes. My wolf, Axel, is restless. He paces inside me, growling low, missing NYX so badly it hurts.

"You need to see her," Axel rumbles in my mind.

"We can’t. She’s where she needs to be," I remind him.

"And we’re not?" he snaps back, bitterly.

I sigh, rubbing my temples. The paperwork on my desk blurs. Being Alpha feels heavier these days,too many meetings, too many whispers, too much pretending I’m fine when I’m falling apart inside.

Then the door slams open. Zack strides in, his face pale and tense.

“Liam,” he says, his voice tight, “we’ve got a problem.”

I look up, instantly alert. “What happened?”

He hesitates, running a hand through his hair. “Lia’s back… and her mother’s with her.”
