LOGINThe attack happened sooner than we thought it would.
We thought we had two days before it came. The scouts told us that. Two days they said.. They were wrong. It was the middle of the night when the horns started blowing. It was not the three short blasts to warn us. This was one blast that sounded like someone was screaming for help. I woke up with a start in Damons arms. My heart was beating hard it felt like it would break my ribs. Damon was already up getting his weapons in the dark. "They are here " he said, his voice. Serious. "Get up now." I did not need to be told. My hands were shaking as I put on some clothes. Pants, one of Damons shirts that still smelled like him and my boots. My wolf was awake inside me growling and pushing against my skin. She wanted to come out. We ran. The corridors were chaotic. People were shouting, getting their weapons trying to get the children to safety. Lila ran past us with a girl in her arms. Her eyes were big with fear. Rafe was already in the hall shouting even though he was hurt. "The wall " he yelled. "They are attacking the wall. Everyone who can fight come with me." Damon took my hand. Pulled me to the armory. We did not waste time talking. There was no time. He gave me a dagger and a shorter blade. For a moment our eyes met. Fierce, scared and full of things we had not said. "Stay close to me " he said. "Always " I said. We went out into the night. The northern wall was on fire. Flames were climbing up the parts as dark figures swarmed over it. This was not a small group of fighters. This was an attack. There were hundreds of them more. They were warriors with glowing marks on their armor moving too fast. In the middle of it all I saw her. A woman with silver hair and eyes that glowed purple in the firelight. She raised her hand and dark magic hit our defenders like a wave. Marcus was already fighting, swinging his axe and taking down enemies. Rafe fought beside him his blade flashing.. They were being pushed back. Damon changed first. His body turned into a wolf as he jumped forward with a loud howl. I followed him. The change was easier this time. Still hurt. My body turned into a wolf. I felt powerful. I landed on four legs beside Damon shining bright in the dark. The enemy saw me away. The haired woman smiled. She looked cold and hungry like she had been waiting for me. "There you are " she called, her voice carrying over the noise. "The White Wolf. Come to me child. Your power was never meant for them." I. Charged at her. The battle was crazy. It was like nothing I had ever seen. People were fighting, screaming and dying. I fought beside Damon like we were one creature. He took the hits using his size and strength to break through their lines. I used my speed and light to confuse them before attacking with claws and teeth. I caught glimpses of the others through the chaos. Lila was fighting with daggers moving like a shadow. Rafe was hurt,. Still fighting. Marcus was like a machine, covered in blood roaring with every swing of his axe. Then the haired woman raised her hands. Darkness exploded outward hitting our people like a wave. I felt it too. A cold feeling trying to take the light out of me. I pushed back hard. White light burst from me shoving the darkness away. Damon howled beside me drawing strength from our bond. We stood together light and shadow fighting between us. The woman laughed, loud and cruel. "You are little wolf " she said. ". You are young. You do not know what you have inside you." She moved her wrist. Pain exploded in my head. I saw memories that were not mine. Fire, screaming, my parents voices as they bound my wolf to save me. The images hit me hard. I stumbled. Damon was there instantly. His black wolf pressed tight against my side giving me his strength. The pain eased enough for me to clear my head. I was not going to let her into my head. I was not going to let her win. The fight got worse after that. I took hits. I gave back worse. Damon fought like a demon beside me protecting me tearing apart anyone who tried to get between us. Our bond was open. His rage, my determination, our love and fear all mixed together. At one point I saw Marcus go down hard a blade in his shoulder. I did not think. I just ran to him. My light flared bright as I tore the attacker off him. Marcus looked up at me eyes with shock and respect. "Why?" he asked, blood on his lips. "Because you are pack " I growled. "Now get up." He did, slowly and painfully.. He got up. The haired woman never stopped watching me. Her smile never faded. "You still think you can save them?" she called across the battlefield. "How many more have to die before you understand? Your power was meant to end the world not protect it." I changed back to form just long enough to shout back at her. "Then maybe the old world deserves to burn " I yelled. ". Not like this. Not by you." I changed again. Charged her directly. She met me with magic crackling around her hands. The impact was brutal. Light slammed against shadow. The ground shook beneath us. People on both sides were thrown backward. For a terrifying seconds it was just her and me. Her blade slashed across my chest. I felt the burning cut, blood running down my fur.. I did not stop. I slammed into her with everything I had. Claws, teeth and pure white power. She screamed as the light burned her. Then she laughed, even as she bled. "You are too late White Wolf " she whispered, her voice in my mind. "The seed is already planted." She threw something at me. A black orb that exploded into shadows. I tried to burn it with my light but it sank into my chest like smoke, cold and wrong. Pain unlike anything I had ever felt ripped through me. It felt like my bones were breaking from the inside. I collapsed. Damons howl cut through the night like a thing as he fought to reach me tearing through bodies, with fury. The last thing I saw before the darkness took me was his wolf form leaping over fallen enemies eyes glowing with terror and rage. Then nothing. Just pain. Silence. The days after the ritual felt really normal which was almost worse than all the things that happened.I woke up every morning with Damons arm around me his breath warm on the back of my neck and for a seconds everything felt okay. The bad thing inside me was still there a little knot behind my ribs but it was quieter now. Weaker. It did not. Give me bad dreams every night. It just waited. It whispered to me when I was tired or angry or alone. It said mean things that sounded like my thoughts. They are watching you. Waiting for you to make a mistake.Damon says he loves you. He will see the bad person you can be eventually.I tried to ignore it every time. I focused on Damons heartbeat. On the way his fingers touched my skin when he thought I was asleep. On the connection between us that felt stronger since the ritual like our love had made some of the bad things go away. The bad thing inside me was patient. The fighting outside our walls was not.We spent the week getting ready. We t
The decision to do the ritual happened fast. We could not wait anymore. The seed was getting worse. It did not wait for me to be tired or distracted. It spoke to me during the day in the middle of conversations while I was eating while I was training. Sometimes it was a cold feeling. Sometimes it was a voice that sounded like mine saying things I did not want to think about. They are all waiting for you to fail. Damon says he loves you. He will leave when you become something he can not control. Why fight for people who never fought for you?I started waking up in the middle of the night with my hands around my throat like I was trying to stop the whispers from coming out. Damon would wake up with me every time pulling my hands away gently holding me until the shaking stopped. He never got angry. He never looked at me like I was broken. He just held me. Whispered that he was there that I was still me that we would beat this.. I could see the fear in his eyes when he thought I was not
The seed was taking over.I could feel the seed every second now like a second heartbeat that beat just a little out of rhythm with my own heartbeat. The seed did not shout at me anymore. The seed whispered to me. Constantly. The seed made suggestions that sounded almost like my own thoughts. The seed told me that the people around me do not really trust me. The seed said that they are waiting for me to fail. The seed asked me why I fight hard for people who spent years wishing I was dead.I started avoiding the people around me.During training I kept to the edges working alone or only with Damon. In the hall I sat quietly eating fast and leaving early. Even Lilas worried glances started to feel too heavy for me. I smiled at Lila when I could. The smiles felt fake to me stretched too thin.Damon noticed everything that was happening to me.He did not push me at first. He just stayed close to me. His hand was on my back when we walked. His arm was around me at night. He gave me kisses
The seed did not give me any peace. It followed me everywhere now. During training the seed was there. While I was eating the seed was there. In the quiet moments when I tried to steal a few seconds alone the seed was there. It was always there like a pulse under my own heartbeat, cold and patient and whispering things I did not want to hear.I started avoiding mirrors because every time I caught my reflection my eyes looked a little darker. Not the warm brown I was used to. Something sharper something hungrier. I told myself it was exhaustion. The pack was still. We were training harder than ever. Sleep was rare and broken.. Deep down I knew it was not just that. The seed was changing me. I could feel it.One evening I was alone in the clearing behind the pack house trying to meditate like Mara had suggested. The air was cool. The sun was just beginning to set, painting the sky in soft oranges and pinks. I sat cross-legged on the grass. Closed my eyes focusing on my breathing. In, ou
The next few days were a blur.We kept burying our dead. We kept fixing the walls. We kept training until we were too tired to move.Every night I fell asleep in Damons arms. I tried not to think about the thing growing inside my chest. It felt like a darker heartbeat. It started small.I felt a spot behind my ribs. A quiet chill that wouldn't go away.Damon held me close. It didn't help. Then it spread.Little tendrils of darkness made my wolf restless.She. Growled, even when there was no threat around us.Sometimes I stared at nothing.I got lost in memories that didn't feel like mine.I remembered fire. My moms voice. My dad casting a spell with his breath.I didn't tell Damon how bad it was getting. Not at first. He knew. Our bond told him.One night after a day of training we lay in bed.The room was dark except for the moonlight.Damons arm was around me.His chest was pressed to my back. His breath was warm against my neck. His hand rested on my stomach. He moved his thumb in

The whispers did not stay quiet for long.By the middle of the day the pack house was filled with people talking about me. Every time I walked by people would look at me. They would glance at me when they thought I was not looking. They would stare at me when they thought I was looking. The peopl
I woke up way before the sun came up. The room was still really dark no moonlight, a weird gray light coming through the curtains. It was like this light was too afraid to be. Damon was sleeping next to me lying on his back one arm thrown out like he owned the bed. His chest was going up and down s
The yard felt all of a sudden. It was like the fences were closing in on us Damon and me. Damon let go of me. His arms just dropped to his sides. It looked like it hurt him to stop touching me. His hands were shaking a little like he did not know what to do with them if they were not on me.I took
This stupid skinny stripe of sunlight snuck through the curtains and fucking punched me right in the eyes. I let out this sad, whiny groan thing and flopped over like a dead fish on the lumpy piece-of-shit cot Damon had basically hurled into the corner last night. “Protection,” he’d grunted, like
