A new day dawned on Eliana's life, full of turns she'd never dreamed of. That early morning, she stood before the mirror in her small room, studying her reflection with eyes full of both worry and resolve. This was nothing like the moment she'd once imagined as a little girl in her Italian village, dreaming of a romantic wedding under golden sunlight, among the olive groves.

But now, in the heart of cold London, she was stepping into a new chapter of her life — one that would be neither simple nor fleeting. She wore a plain white dress, chosen by no one but herself, rejecting every attempt by Alexander's mother, Lady Ingrid, to push her toward something grander, more befitting a von Reinhardt bride.

In the private hall of one of the city's grand hotels, Alexander stood in reserved silence, dressed in an elegant black suit, watching Eliana walk slowly toward the makeshift altar. There weren't many guests — just family and a few close associates, a small ceremony celebrating a deal more than any real union.

They exchanged vows in cold, formal words, as though reciting lines from some business contract rather than real promises. The officiant's voice rang distant in Eliana's ears as she stood there, thinking of everything that had led her to this moment.

After the ceremony, a small dinner was held for a handful of major investors and family members. Eliana sat quietly, watching Alexander work the room with cold confidence, smiling where a smile was called for, falling silent where silence was called for — none of it carrying a shred of real feeling behind that practiced expression.

Late that night, they moved together to Alexander's grand house in one of London's most exclusive neighborhoods. Eliana stood at the entrance, feeling small against the sheer scale of the place and its chill, while Alexander walked ahead with confident strides, as if this enormous house meant nothing more to him than a space he'd long grown used to.

He gestured toward a spacious room on the upper floor. "That's your room," he said flatly. "We'll live under the same roof, but our lives stay entirely separate — as agreed."

Eliana nodded and closed the door quietly behind her.

She sat on the edge of the bed, taking in the grand room that would be her home for the next year, and asked herself: would she really manage to keep her heart at a distance, the way she'd promised him? Or did this cold contract carry within it the beginning of a story she'd never seen coming?

The first days in Alexander's mansion dragged by, heavy as the pages of some cold book written in ink of frost. For all the luxury such a house afforded, Eliana felt a deep loneliness seep into every corner of that vast home. It wasn't just the sheer scale of the place that ate away at her sense of belonging — it was the coldness woven into every relationship the deal had forced on her.

She avoided prying into Alexander's business or trying to work her way into his affairs, careful to keep a safe distance between them. But as time passed, she began noticing small cracks that hadn't been visible at first glance.

One quiet evening, sitting in the back garden with her small sketchbook, drawing gentle lines that traced her memory of her father's house in Italy — each stroke telling a story, each shading carrying the scent of the past.

Alexander approached silently, seeming less cold than usual, and sat beside her without a word. He didn't say much, but his presence alone was enough to tell her there was more beneath the surface than she'd assumed.

After a moment of silence, he asked softly: "What are you drawing, Eliana?"

She hesitated, then answered honestly: "My family's house in Italy. I draw it so I don't forget the details."

Alexander gave a faint smile — not one that seemed to please him — and said: "Seems like there's nothing you want to forget, no matter what happens."

She didn't answer, but felt an unfamiliar warmth stealing into her heart — a warmth she never expected from a man like him.

Then he snapped back into his usual coldness. "Don't stay up too late. We've got a formal event tomorrow, and we need to look like a well-matched couple in front of everyone."

He stood and left, leaving Eliana alone with her tangled thoughts — thoughts caught between her commitment to the contract and a strange feeling she was struggling to name.

As the days passed, Alexander and Eliana settled, slowly, into the reality of sharing a roof despite the emotional distance between them. Life carried on in a slow rhythm of formal appointments, family gatherings, and brief exchanged glances carrying meanings that weren't yet entirely clear.

One evening, on their way to a formal dinner, Alexander noticed Eliana in a simple but elegant dress, a gift from his mother, who'd initially tried to impose her own choices on her. Eliana hadn't objected, telling herself it was just part of holding up her end of the contract.

Watching her come down the hotel staircase, Alexander felt a genuine flicker of admiration he couldn't fully hide. Her look was understated, but carried a presence impossible to ignore.

During the dinner, Eliana watched women flock around Alexander, drawn in by his commanding presence and social standing. She tried to shrug off a strange feeling creeping into her chest, but couldn't, when she saw one of them rest a hand on his arm with a dazzling smile.

Eliana walked over calmly and placed her own hand on his other arm, saying with a practiced social smile: "Darling, won't you introduce me to your friend?"

Alexander glanced at her, clearly reading exactly what she was doing, but he didn't object — in fact, despite himself, he rather enjoyed that small flash of jealousy in her eyes.

After the dinner, walking back to the hotel through the lit streets of Paris, a different kind of silence settled between them — less cold this time, closer to warmth.

Eliana stopped suddenly on a bridge overlooking the Seine, gazing at the lights reflected on the water's surface, saying nothing for a long while.

Alexander came up beside her, and looked out at the same view.

"Why'd you put your hand on my arm back there?" he finally asked, in a tone she hadn't heard from him before.

Eliana smiled, a little shy, and answered with sudden honesty: "I don't really know... maybe I just didn't like the way she was looking at you."

He studied her for a long moment, as though discovering something new in her with every second, then said quietly: "And I didn't much like the way you were talking to that Italian guy back in London."

They both laughed — a real, easy laugh, the first one they'd shared since the wedding.

And standing there together on that bridge, far from the noise of the party and the coldness of the contract that had thrown them together, each of them felt — without quite saying it — that something between them had started to shift. That the boundaries they'd both drawn were beginning to blur, slowly, like the lights of Paris scattering across the water
