~ CHLOE POV ~

Six-thirty in the morning was the only time the Cole penthouse felt peaceful. I found Thomas in the kitchen, organizing a silver tray with a single cup of black coffee, half a grapefruit, and a stack of printed financial reports.

"Mr. Cole takes his breakfast in the formal dining room," Thomas explained softly, noting my presence. "Alone. He reviews the overnight markets. The children eat in the kitchen at eight."

"Not today," I said.

I woke Leo, Maya, and Sam at seven. They were groggy and confused, especially when I handed them plates of scrambled eggs and toast instead of directing them to the kitchen island.

"Follow me," I told them.

"We're not allowed in the formal dining room before school," Leo said, holding his plate defensively. "Dad is working."

"Your dad has a very large table," I replied, grabbing a pitcher of orange juice. "And you have to eat. Let's go."

I marched all three children down the corridor and pushed open the doors to the formal dining room.

Harrison sat at the far end of a long mahogany table. He wore a crisp white dress shirt, his sleeves rolled up to the elbows, his focus on his tablet. The silence of his morning routine shattered the second Sam bumped his plate against the doorframe, rattling his silverware.

Harrison looked up. His blue eyes snapped from the noise to the three children, and finally, to me. The temperature in the room instantly dropped.

"Ms. Harper," Harrison said, his voice a low, warning drawl. "What is this?"

"Breakfast," I answered cheerfully, stepping fully into the room and ushering Maya to a chair. "The kitchen island was a little cramped today. We decided to join you."

Harrison set his tablet face-down on the table. He didn't raise his voice, but the sudden shift in his posture was intimidation. "Thomas explained my schedule to you."

"He did," I agreed, helping Sam into a seat directly across from his father. "But I think there was a misunderstanding about my schedule."

Harrison stared at me, his irritation simmering just beneath his polished exterior. "There is no misunderstanding. Take the children back to the east wing."

"I can't do that, Mr. Cole," I said calmly.

His gaze turned sharp and lethal. "Excuse me?"

"My contract," I reminded him, keeping my tone perfectly polite as I set the juice pitcher down. "Section four, paragraph two. I am legally obligated to foster a stable, healthy environment for your heirs. Psychologically speaking, a stable environment requires the active presence of their remaining parent."

Leo stopped chewing. He looked from me to his father, his eyes wide with a mix of awe and terror. Maya shrank back in her chair.

Harrison stood up slowly. He was much taller than me, and he used every inch of his height to project authority.

I didn't move an inch. I just looked back at him, waiting.

Harrison glanced down at his children. They were watching him, completely silent, waiting for the inevitable explosion. I knew exactly what Harrison was calculating. He could fire me right now. But firing me meant causing a screaming match in front of his kids, derailing his entire morning, and dealing with Thomas resigning by noon.

He was trapped, and he knew it.

Harrison slowly lowered himself back into his chair. He didn't touch his tablet again. "Sit down, Ms. Harper."

I pulled out a chair next to Sam and sat down.

The first five minutes were excruciating. The quiet was tense and unnatural. Sam swung his legs, kicking the table nervously. Harrison picked up his coffee cup, his eyes fixed on the wall opposite him. He was refusing to participate.

I wasn't going to let him retreat into his own head.

"Maya," I said, breaking the silence. "Didn't you have a spelling test today?"

Maya jumped slightly at her name. She looked at Harrison, then at me, before giving a tiny nod.

"She studied for an hour last night," I told Harrison. I kept my gaze steady on him until he was forced to turn his head and acknowledge the conversation. "She knows all the words."

Harrison looked at his daughter. Maya froze, gripping her fork tightly.

"Is that right?" Harrison asked. His voice was stiff, unpracticed at casual conversation with his own family.

Maya nodded again. "Yes, sir."

"Just 'yes' is fine, Maya," I gently corrected, then looked at Leo. "And Leo has a science project due on Friday. We're going to start building the model tonight."

Leo glared at me, clearly not wanting his academic life broadcasted, but Harrison shifted his attention to him.

"What kind of model?" Harrison asked.

Leo hesitated. He looked down at his plate. "A bridge."

"Suspension or truss?" Harrison inquired.

The question surprised Leo. He looked up, his defenses dropping for just a fraction of a second. "Suspension. We have to use balsa wood and string."

"Truss bridges distribute tension better if you're restricted to lightweight materials," Harrison stated, the corporate strategist momentarily bleeding into the conversation. "But suspension works if your anchor points are secure."

Leo didn't quite know what to say to that, but the spark of genuine interest in his eyes was undeniable. He gave a small nod and took a bite of his eggs.

For the next fifteen minutes, I expertly directed the traffic. I didn't let the kids overwhelm him, and I didn't let Harrison slip back into silence. I tossed out small prompts, forcing him to actually look at Maya when she spoke, forcing him to pass Sam the toast instead of pretending the boy wasn't there.

It wasn't a warm, laughing family breakfast. It was tense, awkward, and highly negotiated. But they were sitting at the same table.

At exactly seven forty-five, Harrison checked his watch. The relief that his required time was over washed across his face. He stood up, buttoning his suit jacket.

"I have a board meeting," Harrison announced to the room.

"Have a good day at work, Dad," Maya said softly.

Harrison paused. He looked at her, gave a stiff nod, and walked toward the doors.

I stood up to start clearing the plates.

Harrison stopped in the doorway. He turned around, bypassing his children and locked his eyes on me. The look he shot me wasn't just anger. It was a dark, dangerous glare, layered with a promising intensity that sent a sudden jolt of adrenaline straight through my system. He was furious at my insubordination, but the calculating gleam in his blue eyes proved he was also dangerously intrigued by my refusal to fear him.

He didn't say a word. He just held my gaze for some seconds, ensuring I understood exactly what I had done.

Then he turned and walked out.

I stood by the table, my pulse drumming a fast, unsteady rhythm as a strange thrill warred with the terrifying realization of what I had just accomplished.

I had just declared war on a billionaire in his own home.

~ HARRISON POV ~Vanessa Thorne slid her tablet across the boardroom table, her manicured fingers deliberately brushing the cuff of my suit jacket."We can discuss the final equity split over dinner," Vanessa said, keeping her voice pitched just under the drone of the legal team debating at the far end of the room. "My place. We should celebrate."I looked at her hand, then up at her expertly painted smile. Three years ago, Vanessa and I had merged two corporate subsidiaries. Since then, she had made it her secondary career goal to merge our personal lives, treating my widower status as a temporary vacancy on a board of directors. "My schedule is full, Vanessa," I said, pulling my arm back. She offered a knowing, sympathetic smile that didn't reach her eyes. "The children. Of course."She didn't care about my children. Neither did I, at this exact moment. I cared about the fact that for the first time in my professional life, I could not focus on a multi-billion dollar acquisition.

~ CHLOE POV ~The Cole penthouse didn't look like a home. It looked like an art gallery where nobody was allowed to touch the exhibits. I stepped out of the private elevator at exactly eight in the morning, carrying my two duffel bags. Thomas stood waiting for me in the foyer, holding a clipboard and looking just as exhausted as he had yesterday. "Welcome to the residence," Thomas said, keeping his voice carefully hushed. I looked around. The living room stretched out in a massive expanse of white marble, floor to ceiling windows, and sharp, slate-colored furniture. There were no family photographs on the walls. There were no stray shoes by the door, no coloring books on the glass coffee table, and no toys. It was a sterile, perfectly calculated environment designed for a billionaire who wanted to forget he had a family the moment he walked through the door. "The children are in the east wing," Thomas explained, handing me a folded stack of fabric. "This is the standard uniform. M

~ HARRISON POV ~"Cancel the rest of the interviews," I said to Thomas, my gaze locked on the twenty four year old standing in the center of the smoke. "Ms. Harper is moving in."Thomas stared at me, his face pale under the fluorescent hallway lights. "Moving in? Sir, you haven't even read her background check.""I don't need to," I replied, finally breaking eye contact with Chloe to look at my estate manager. "Get the children down to the car. Use the service elevator."Security was still swarming the hallway, shouting into radios and waving smoke-clearing fans, but the chaos had fundamentally shifted. My children were no longer screaming. Leo had stopped shielding his younger siblings and was instead watching Chloe with cautious, wide-eyed suspicion. "Leo," I said sharply. My son flinched, looking away from her and up at me. "Follow Thomas," I ordered. Leo didn't move. Maya buried her face in his shirt, and four-year-old Sam just looked terrified. The failure of my authority stun

~ CHLOE POV ~The rejection email glowed on my phone screen: Termination of Representation. I swiped left and deleted the message without breaking my stride across the lobby of Cole Enterprises. I had fifty dollars in my checking account, an eviction notice taped to my apartment door, and crippling student debt. Panic simply wasn't an option today.Thomas, Harrison Cole’s estate manager, met me on the executive floor. He had the frantic, hollow-eyed look of a man surviving on espresso and stress. "Five nannies in six months," Thomas said, matching my pace down the glass-lined corridor. "The last one left crying before noon. I am begging you, Ms. Harper, do not go in there if you startle easily. I cannot handle another resignation.""I don't startle," I told him. "And I don't quit."He pressed his thumb against a biometric scanner outside a set of double doors. "Mr. Cole is already irritated. Keep it brief."The doors slid open. Harrison Cole sat behind a minimalist desk that looked l
