~ CHLOE POV ~

The rejection email glowed on my phone screen: Termination of Representation. I swiped left and deleted the message without breaking my stride across the lobby of Cole Enterprises. I had fifty dollars in my checking account, an eviction notice taped to my apartment door, and crippling student debt. Panic simply wasn't an option today.

Thomas, Harrison Cole’s estate manager, met me on the executive floor. He had the frantic, hollow-eyed look of a man surviving on espresso and stress.

"Five nannies in six months," Thomas said, matching my pace down the glass-lined corridor. "The last one left crying before noon. I am begging you, Ms. Harper, do not go in there if you startle easily. I cannot handle another resignation."

"I don't startle," I told him. "And I don't quit."

He pressed his thumb against a biometric scanner outside a set of double doors. "Mr. Cole is already irritated. Keep it brief."

The doors slid open. Harrison Cole sat behind a minimalist desk that looked like a slab of floating slate. The billionaire didn't look up from his tablet when I stopped in front of him. He radiated cold, impatient authority, treating my arrival like a misfiled spreadsheet.

"Chloe Harper," he finally said. His voice was a quiet, commanding drawl that demanded attention. He tossed my printed resume onto the desk. "You bypassed standard security and my hiring agency to request a direct interview."

"Your agency dropped me," I said, keeping my voice steady. "But I have the highest clearance and certification in the city."

Harrison leaned back. His eyes were a striking, piercing blue, but devoid of warmth. He studied me with clinical detachment, taking in my cheap blazer and pulled-back hair.

"You are twenty-four years old." He said.

"Yes, sir." I replied.

"My children are chaos incarnate," Harrison stated calmly. "They do not need a twenty four year old babysitter until she finds a better career. They need a warden. I require silence in my home so I can run this company. You are too young, too inexperienced, and unsuitable for this level of household management."

"My age makes me fast," I countered. "And if you look at my references—"

"I looked at your references," he interrupted, his tone chilling. "I also looked at why you were blacklisted. You caused a scene at your last placement."

"I stopped a client from striking his six year old son." I responded.

Harrison paused. The slightest shift in his expression was the only sign he actually heard me. But his cold mask snapped right back into place. "I run a global empire, Ms. Harper. I don't have time to manage my employees, and I certainly don't have time to manage you. The answer is—"

A piercing shriek cut through the ceiling.

The executive-floor fire alarms triggered, flashing blinding white light across the office. A mechanical voice blared over the intercom, ordering immediate evacuation.

Harrison bolted upright, his focus snapping past me toward the frosted glass doors of his private elevator—the direct line to the penthouse.

Thick gray smoke poured from the seams of the elevator doors, spilling across the hallway floor.

Thomas burst into the office. "Sir! The penthouse feed is down! Security is trying to override the elevator, but it's stuck between floors!"

Harrison moved around the desk, his composure cracking for the first time. "Get those doors open. Now."

While Thomas shouted into his radio and Harrison demanded updates from security, I didn't wait. I dropped my bag, ran into the hallway, and wedged my fingers into the narrow gap between the metal elevator doors.

The metal was warm, but it wasn't blistering.

I braced my heels against the floor and pulled. My arms shook with the effort, the friction scraping my skin, but the safety latch finally gave way. The doors slid apart with a loud screech.

A cloud of coughing, soot-covered children tumbled out of the smoke-filled cab.

"Maya! Sam!" A boy, maybe ten years old, scrambled to pull his younger sister and brother onto the carpet. They were hacking, their faces streaked with ash, eyes wide with terror at the alarms and the blinding strobe lights.

Security guards poured out of the stairwell, shouting contradictory orders. Thomas was yelling for medics. The chaos was deafening.

I dropped to my knees right in the center of it.

"Hey," I said, projecting my voice enough to cut through the noise without shouting. "Look at me."

The ten year old flinched, pulling the youngest boy behind his back defensively.

I didn't reach for them. I just crouched there, keeping my posture unthreatening. I took a quick breath.

"Nobody is hurt," I said firmly, locking eyes with the oldest boy. "You're safe. But I need you to take a slow breath. In through your nose."

The little girl, Maya, let out a terrified sob. "We didn't mean to! Leo just wanted to make a cloud!"

"A cloud," I repeated calmly. I pulled a tissue from my pocket and held it out to her. "Well, you definitely made one. But the alarms are loud, and you're scaring yourselves. Everyone take a breath. Together."

I exaggerated a slow inhale. After a second of hesitation, Leo copied me. Then Maya. Then the four year old, Sam. The panic in their eyes started to dial down, replaced by exhaustion and the dawning realization that they were in massive trouble.

"Good," I said, giving them a quick, reassuring smile. "Now, I'm going to stand up, and we're going to step away from the smoke. Okay?"

Leo nodded once.

I stood up and turned around.

Harrison Cole stood three feet away.

The alarms had finally been silenced, leaving a ringing quiet in the hallway. The security guards had frozen, unsure of what to do next. Harrison wasn't looking at his staff. He wasn't even looking at the smoke clearing from his private elevator.

He was staring at me.

The dismissive, impatient CEO from two minutes ago was gone. His posture was rigid, his blue eyes locked onto mine with a sharp, calculating intensity that sent a sudden jolt of electricity straight through me.

He had spent the past months watching nannies flee from his children. He had just watched me subdue the chaos of his life in under sixty seconds, without raising my voice.

Harrison stepped forward, ignoring the frantic security team, and stopped right in front of me.

"Thomas," he said, his voice dropping an octave, his gaze never leaving mine.

"Yes, sir?" the estate manager squeaked.

"Cancel the rest of the interviews." Harrison tilted his head, his focus unnervingly fixated on me. "Ms. Harper is moving in.”

  • The Billionaire's Nanny Clause    Chapter 5 — The Variable

~ HARRISON POV ~Vanessa Thorne slid her tablet across the boardroom table, her manicured fingers deliberately brushing the cuff of my suit jacket."We can discuss the final equity split over dinner," Vanessa said, keeping her voice pitched just under the drone of the legal team debating at the far end of the room. "My place. We should celebrate."I looked at her hand, then up at her expertly painted smile. Three years ago, Vanessa and I had merged two corporate subsidiaries. Since then, she had made it her secondary career goal to merge our personal lives, treating my widower status as a temporary vacancy on a board of directors. "My schedule is full, Vanessa," I said, pulling my arm back. She offered a knowing, sympathetic smile that didn't reach her eyes. "The children. Of course."She didn't care about my children. Neither did I, at this exact moment. I cared about the fact that for the first time in my professional life, I could not focus on a multi-billion dollar acquisition.

  • The Billionaire's Nanny Clause    Chapter 4 — The Interception

~ CHLOE POV ~Six-thirty in the morning was the only time the Cole penthouse felt peaceful. I found Thomas in the kitchen, organizing a silver tray with a single cup of black coffee, half a grapefruit, and a stack of printed financial reports."Mr. Cole takes his breakfast in the formal dining room," Thomas explained softly, noting my presence. "Alone. He reviews the overnight markets. The children eat in the kitchen at eight.""Not today," I said.I woke Leo, Maya, and Sam at seven. They were groggy and confused, especially when I handed them plates of scrambled eggs and toast instead of directing them to the kitchen island."Follow me," I told them."We're not allowed in the formal dining room before school," Leo said, holding his plate defensively. "Dad is working.""Your dad has a very large table," I replied, grabbing a pitcher of orange juice. "And you have to eat. Let's go."I marched all three children down the corridor and pushed open the doors to the formal dining room. Har

~ CHLOE POV ~The Cole penthouse didn't look like a home. It looked like an art gallery where nobody was allowed to touch the exhibits. I stepped out of the private elevator at exactly eight in the morning, carrying my two duffel bags. Thomas stood waiting for me in the foyer, holding a clipboard and looking just as exhausted as he had yesterday. "Welcome to the residence," Thomas said, keeping his voice carefully hushed. I looked around. The living room stretched out in a massive expanse of white marble, floor to ceiling windows, and sharp, slate-colored furniture. There were no family photographs on the walls. There were no stray shoes by the door, no coloring books on the glass coffee table, and no toys. It was a sterile, perfectly calculated environment designed for a billionaire who wanted to forget he had a family the moment he walked through the door. "The children are in the east wing," Thomas explained, handing me a folded stack of fabric. "This is the standard uniform. M

~ HARRISON POV ~"Cancel the rest of the interviews," I said to Thomas, my gaze locked on the twenty four year old standing in the center of the smoke. "Ms. Harper is moving in."Thomas stared at me, his face pale under the fluorescent hallway lights. "Moving in? Sir, you haven't even read her background check.""I don't need to," I replied, finally breaking eye contact with Chloe to look at my estate manager. "Get the children down to the car. Use the service elevator."Security was still swarming the hallway, shouting into radios and waving smoke-clearing fans, but the chaos had fundamentally shifted. My children were no longer screaming. Leo had stopped shielding his younger siblings and was instead watching Chloe with cautious, wide-eyed suspicion. "Leo," I said sharply. My son flinched, looking away from her and up at me. "Follow Thomas," I ordered. Leo didn't move. Maya buried her face in his shirt, and four-year-old Sam just looked terrified. The failure of my authority stun
