The black SUVs pulled through the estate gates just after dawn, three of them in a tight line, and every Guardian on the grounds straightened as they rolled to a stop.

"Dad's here," Ethan said quietly beside me, and I felt him go still in a way I'd only seen when something truly mattered. "He didn't call ahead."

"Is that bad?"

"It means he already knows something."
