That night, I lay in bed and stare up at the stars. I took the waterproof layer off of the top of the tent just so that I would be able to stare at the sky as I fall asleep.

As I watch the stars, I listen to the insects chirping outside. I really thought that I would fall asleep as soon as my head touched the mattress but the peacefulness of the night is enough to keep me awake. Not because I am distracted, but because there is just something restful and relaxing about laying outside and enjoy

  • The Heir's Child   Truths

"Hey, I should probably re-wrap those." I warn him when we get back to the campsite. We spent at least 2 hours at the waterfall. I could have stayed there longer if I had not started to get hungry. The granola bars and beef jerky do not go too far when you are pregnant. "It can wait until after lunch." He tells me.The way back I walked much slower than the way there. It was nice to just let the forest wash over me. Going back to civilization tomorrow is not going to be easy. Not after how peaceful this weekend has been so far. I did make absolutely sure that I did not trip on anything on the way back though. Not only was that terrifying, but I would absolutely hate for Mark to get hurt worse than he did already today. If it had happened again I would have had to call it a weekend and head back home early."Fine, but after lunch I am going to make sure everything is looking better. If it is done bleeding, we might want to let it dry out a bit." I tell him."Will do, Doc. Or is it Q

  • The Heir's Child   Waterfall

The last stretch of the trail passes much faster than I expect. As soon as we round the final bend, the waterfall comes into view, sunlight sparkling through the mist. Every instinct tells me to run the rest of the way.Instead, I force myself to match Mark's slower pace.He insists he is fine, but I notice thin trails of blood running down one arm where the rocks scraped him. Guilt settles heavily in my stomach. If he had not caught me, those cuts would have been mine."There it is," Mark says with a tired smile. "Worth the hike.""It really is."His voice sounds more strained than before, and I can hear the slight hitch in his breathing from the climb. Humans do not heal the way werewolves do. A scrape like that could stay sore for days if it was not cleaned properly."I think I need to sit down for a minute," I say, pretending to catch my breath. His attention immediately shifts to me."Of course."Exactly as I hoped. He spots a pair of large boulders near the water and leads me ov

  • The Heir's Child   Oops

"So, what did you want to do today?" Mark asks.We just finished having eggs and lots of bacon for breakfast. Even I am surprised by how much I ate while we were sitting outside. After eating enough for three people, I still do not feel full but I want to get up and moving."I was thinking that we could go for a walk. I heard a waterfall somewhere close by." I tell him."A waterfall? How can you hear that from here?" He asks in confusion."Oh, must have been extra loud earlier. I definitely heard one earlier though." I tell him.It is hard to remember sometimes that humans cannot hear as well as werewolves. When I heard the waterfall I got excited to go and see it. It did not even cross my mind that Mark would not be able to hear it from here."You must still have some amazing hearing. Even knowing that it is there, I cannot hear it. It is a fairly long walk though." He warns."That is okay. I like to walk. Besides, the doctor says that it is good for me." I say."It is going to be a

  • The Heir's Child   Wolves

Waking up to the sounds of birds chirping is by far my favorite way to wake up. Just laying there and listening to them singing to each other with the wind blowing gently by. Definitely my favorite way to wake up and one of the best things about camping.Waking up to Mark outside cursing. That is an entirely different story. It is one that brought a chuckle out of me when I heard him trying to start the fire once again though.Smiling, I stretch before grabbing my bag of toiletries and a bottle of water. I can do nothing before at least brushing my teeth. When I walk out of my tent, Mark immediately stops mumbling to himself and pretends like he knows what he is doing as he tries to get the fire back to where we need it to cook breakfast. I cannot help but smile and shake my head slightly as I walk towards the creek to brush my teeth. With my supernatural hearing, I can hear him start muttering to himself once again as soon as he thinks that I am out of earshot. I find it harder and ha

Not because I am distracted, but because there is just something restful and relaxing about laying outside and enjoying nature. We still have the fire crackling nice and low outside, where I can still keep an eye on it. I assured Mark that as camping Queen, I am more than qualified of making sure that the fire does not spread over night. Luckily, he believed me because I have no way of explaining to him that my wolf will really be the one watching the fire while I am asleep. At least, I am supposed to be asleep. Even as at peace as I am in this moment, I cannot stop thinking about some of the things that Mark

  • The Heir's Child   Divorce Truths

As Mark and I sit here, eating our cobbler, I cannot help but ask him some of the questions that I have been wondering about for a long time. It just seems so odd to me that somebody like Mark would be divorced and hardly ever see his children."Um, Mark, can I ask you a question?" I say quietly."Of course, Rowan. I feel like I know way more about you than you do about me." He says with a chuckle."That is true. Then again, most of my secrets are visibly obvious so it is a little hard to hide those." I joke.More seriously, I add, "What happened with you and your wife? I mean, every single lady in town is after you and even the elderly ladies see you as a catch." Mark stares at his hands for a bit before he answers me. I start to worry that I may have offended him by the time he finally takes a deep breath and answers me."Well, you really did jump right in there. It is a little hard to explain about her. I will say that we both grew in different directions. We got together when we

  • The Heir's Child   Flashes

Flashes. That was all I had.Flashes of light.Flashes of voices.Flashes of movement just beyond my reach.Every time I tried to grasp one of the memories, it slipped away like water through my fingers. My head pounded. It felt as though someone had taken a hammer to my skull and then left the pie

  • The Heir's Child   Future plans

Troy looked far too pleased with himself as we sat around sipping our drinks and talking about all the trouble we'd inevitably get into at college.I still couldn't believe everyone had decided to go.When Lyall and I first made our plans, I'd imagined the two of us facing a new world together. Som

"On a more serious note," Mel said, lifting his empty glass, "one of us has to go get the next round, don't we?"A collective groan went around the table. We all laughed at Mel's expression. His family was ridiculously wealthy. Not spoiled exactly, but definitely accustomed to convenience. If there

  • The Heir's Child   Last Night Out

Knowing I wouldn't be allowed to leave until I promised to be careful, I gave my parents the reassurance they wanted before retreating to my room to finish getting ready. Most of my friends were guys, and I usually blended right in with them. Every now and then, though, I enjoyed reminding them tha
