Sophia parked her car in front of the tall iron gate that guarded the orphanage. She sat quietly for a moment, took a deep breath, then stepped out.

The building looked calm, just like always. Its cream-colored walls were decorated with cute cartoon drawings.

Sophia walked through the gate and nodded at the security guard, who immediately recognized her and offered a polite smile.

"Good afternoon, Miss Sophia."

She gave a small smile back. "Is Sister May around?"

"She’s inside with the kids," he said, stepping aside.

Sophia thanked him and went in. She heard children laughing down the hall, but her mind was focused on one child—Ava.

She walked slowly, the sound of her heels soft on the tile. Turning the corner, she saw a group of children sitting in a circle. Among them was Ava who sat quietly, her little hands resting on her knees while the others played.

Ava was a beautiful girl with gentle eyes and a quiet, delicate way about her. She barely spoke to anyone but Sister May… and Soph

Victor moved quickly, grabbing Sophia before her fingers could touch the door handle. He wrapped his arms around her from behind, holding her tightly, desperately.“Don’t go,” he whispered, pressing a soft kiss to the side of her neck. “I’m sorry… if all I’ve ever been is a burden. To you… and to our little girl.”Sophia trembled slightly, her voice low and pained. “Do you even know Ava is sick? And someone out there knows what happened between us. They’ve been threatening to tell Lyriel… but for some reason, they haven’t yet.”Victor froze. He spun her around, panic rising in his eyes."What?" he asked sharply.“That’s why you need to win Lyriel over,” she said, tears glistening in her eyes. “Give her everything she wants, so we can get everything from her.”“Sophia…” he murmured, pulling her into an even tighter hug.“I even asked her for money,” Sophia confessed, her voice breaking. “She made me sign a contract. It wasn’t like her.”“I know Lyriel,” Victor said, rubbing her back ge

“If not for Ava, I wouldn’t be doing this… You bitch,” Sophia cursed silently, her fake smile stretching so wide her jaw began to ache. But she kept it up, pretending everything was fine.Lyriel gave her the same kind of smile—tight, hollow, and sweet on the outside. “Well, since we’re done here,” Sophia said, clearing her throat, “I’ll be going now.” She handed the documents back to Lyriel, who neatly placed them where she’d gotten them earlier.“I’ll walk you out,” Lyriel offered.Sophia quickly shook her head, almost too fast it was a miracle her neck didn’t snap. “Oh no, it’s fine. You don’t need to.”“Why?” Lyriel asked, tilting her head with a playful pout. “Are you mad at me or something?”Sophia forced a short laugh, rubbing the back of her neck like a shy child. "Of course not.""Good," Lyriel said softly, her smile returning. "Because it’s still you and me forever, right?"Sophia nodded tightly, pretending the words didn’t irritate her. Whoever told Lyriel they were friends

Lyriel slowly rose from the bed, her robe swaying as she stood tall in the center of her room. She didn’t speak immediately. Her fingers curled at her sides before she raised one hand to push her hair behind her ear.She inhaled deeply. Then, she began pacing, her eyes fixed on the rug beneath her feet as if searching for something only she could see.Her head turned to Sophia slowly again, her eyes slightly wide. Her mouth parted just a little before she echoed, "Did you just say a hundred million?"Sophia nodded once, biting down the urge to flinch.Lyriel blinked again, this time dramatically."And you call that little? A hundred million dollars ,little?" Lyriel asked with a raised brow, a disbelieving laugh slipping through her lips. "Wow, Sophia… what do you call a large amount then? An entire country?"Sophia gave a nervous laugh, brushing her hair back—a habit she always had when she was uneasy.Lyriel stood still for a moment, now biting her nails. “What’s even my net worth th

The clinking of cutlery echoed softly through the quiet dining room. Lyriel lifted another spoonful of rice to her mouth and glanced up. Jerry was still standing, just watching her."Join me, alright?" she said softly. "You’re my only family now."She motioned to the seat beside her, and Jerry sat down slowly, his movements hesitant, like he was afraid he might break something.Lyriel smiled, leaned over and added to his food, piling just enough before handing the plate to him."Come on," she urged with another smile. "Eat. I made it with too much care for you to insult me by staring."Jerry took the plate but didn’t lift his spoon. He kept watching her, like he didn’t recognize the woman seated next to him.And maybe that made sense. After all, for years, Lyriel had never shared a meal with him. Not once. Not since she started dating Victor. Back then, she barely looked at him,let alone acknowledged his existence. Now… she was smiling at him?She ate quietly, savoring each bite. But

Sophia’s fingers tightened around the letter. Her whole body went stiff and the room suddenly felt too small. She looked down at Ava, her daughter. Her own flesh and blood… and her biggest regret. But Ava didn’t look back. She just kept staring out the window silently."Ava…" Sophia said softly, her voice shaking. "I promise I’ll come back. I’ll explain everything, okay?"There was no answer, no nod, no glance. Just silence.Sophia wiped her tears roughly and grabbed her bag, but her hands trembled so badly that the strap slipped. She caught it, clutched it to her chest like it could hold her together. She opened her mouth to speak again… but no words came out.So she turned away quickly because she knew if she stayed one second longer, she wouldn’t be able to leave. And all she’d do was cry.She walked out of the room on unsteady legs, quietly closing the door behind her.And the moment she stepped into the hallway… she broke.Tears poured down her face faster, harder. She leaned aga

Sophia slowly turned around and looked at Ava, who was still sitting quietly on the hospital bed.She quickly glanced at Sister May, who stood frozen by the door, her mouth slightly open as she looked back and forth between them."Ava," Sophia said, her voice shaky and barely above a whisper.Ava turned her head slightly, meeting Sophia’s eyes with a calmness that didn’t seem like it belonged to a five-year-old."Sister May," Ava said softly. "Can you give us a few minutes?"May hesitated for a moment, her gaze drifting from Ava to Sophia. But then, slowly, she nodded "Alright," she said quietly, then stepped out and gently closed the door behind her.Sophia walked over in silence and sat beside Ava carefully, like she was afraid to scare her off. She reached out to hold her hand, but stopped halfway."W-what did you just call me?" she asked, trying to smile, though her voice was weak.Ava didn’t look at her. She stared at her lap and spoke quietly."Are you really not my mom?" she a
