After stopping by his parents' house to pick up the gift that his mother had prepared, Josh returned to his house. He was quite thankful that his mom was taking care of a charity so he didn't have to meet her.
Tonight he needed to repair his reputation in front of Ashley's parents. And that would take up a lot of his energy and mind. Therefore, not meeting his own mother was a huge blessing for him. Because Josh could eliminate one cause of his confusion, and make his burden a little lighter.
Josh was waiting for the elevator when Ashley walked up from behind him with the same destination.
The girl looked a little surprised when Josh turned his head and made their eyes meet each other accidentally. It seems like Ashley didn't realize before that the figure standing in front of the elevator was Josh.
Awkwardness suddenly ambushed the empty space between Ashley and Josh. Ashley looked away, and Josh still turned to look at her but with a confused feeling.
Ashley didn't expect that she would run into Josh in the lobby, even though she thought she wouldn't see him forever. It had been so long since she had seen him after that annoying incident, and Ashley was really at the point of no longer expecting him to come back again to their apartment.
Aside from being too tired and fed up with Josh’s insanity—she didn’t take his word for it when Josh doesn't come home for a long time with the excuse of going out of town for work—Ashley can't forget the last moment before the man disappeared without any words. Josh might think that when he breaks a promise, it's nothing more than a trivial matter. But his actions had put Ashley into a very difficult situation that caused her relationship with her parents to deteriorate even further.
Meanwhile, Josh, at that time, was only confused because he didn't expect to meet Ashley there. He didn't prepare himself for this kind of situation.
The elevator doors in front of them also somehow didn't open.
Ashley even thought about turning around and canceling her intention to go home by going anywhere—just for her to not be near that jerk. Because if she remembered, her feelings were never good whenever she was with him.
But in the midst of Ashley’s indecision and a situation that felt very awkward, Josh finally tried to break the silence that ambushed them both. Josh himself didn't know what he was thinking until he was able to get out of his confusion and regain control of himself in a very calm demeanor.
Perhaps it was Ashley's silence and the way the girl ignored him that finally made Josh realize that things could have been worse if he had done the same.
That's why he tried to restrain himself and show a little relenting attitude.
After the elevator doors finally opened and the two of them went inside, Josh reached out his hand to pull the large bag that Ashley was carrying.
“Let me carry it.”
There were a few strands of vegetables sticking up so it was enough to answer in general where Ashley was from and what the bag might contain.
Ashley actually wanted to prevent Josh from taking her groceries. Her forehead was already filled with frowns as Josh pulled it along. But Ashley quickly corrected her response and just let go of the bag of groceries until it passed to Josh. Aside from the fact that the groceries were heavy enough to work in her favor, her quick thinking made her realize not to get into an argument with Josh.
Her feelings of annoyance hadn't gone away, she just forced them to be buried deep. Which meant, with just a small trigger, Ashley could probably spew out all of her unexpressed anger. But if she did that, the situation between the two of them would only get more complicated and worse.
So she chose to avoid much interaction with Josh as much as possible rather than satisfying her ego by showing his frustration.
After all, this long period of time where she didn't meet and communicate with Josh at all, actually gave her time to think very carefully. About what she should do, and what she should avoid. She had also been able to carve out her goals very clearly. Therefore, she felt as if she could see her life in a bigger picture.
“Why are you shopping so much?” Josh only took a small peek at the contents of the bag he was carrying and judged by the weight he felt. “Aunty Gong didn't buy any ingredients?”
Ashley intended to keep her mouth shut and ignore whatever the man said or did.
“Ash?”
But Josh kept talking, and even worse, he did not turn his head.
“Why? Ash?”
From the reflection of the elevator wall, Ashley could clearly see the shadow of the man who spoke by constantly turning his head towards her.
“You don't like her cooking? I thought it was pretty good. Do you want to order delivery today?”
Ashley sighed. At first she didn't feel that upset and felt fine while ignoring him. But Josh's words really didn't sound pleasant to her ears.
“You've only eaten it a few times. You haven't even had Aunty Gong's cooking in a long time,” Ashley held back her annoyance. Her words may have been sharp, but her tone of voice sounded very stiff and emotionless. She seemed to have managed to restrain herself well so far. “I don't think it's appropriate for you to judge her work. Or to judge my taste.”
“Sorry,” Josh said lightly and briefly. “I didn't mean that.”
Josh, amongst the complexity of his thoughts, was only trying to improve the situation between the two of them by dispelling any awkwardness and breaking the ice. Ashley's silence forced him to say many nonsensical things that he didn't realize were bothering the girl.
“Aunty Gong has been on leave for three days due to illness. I wanted to try cooking some food, but I didn't have the ingredients I needed at home. So I bought them.” Ashley explained as clearly as possible in the shortest way possible.
“I didn't know you could cook. It would be nice to taste your cooking.”
Ashley suddenly turned to Josh with a very sharp look. “Are you even going to stay after I finish cooking? I thought you'd just drop by for a while and then leave again.”
Josh frowned. He realized there was sarcasm hidden behind the girl's words even though the way of speaking caught by his ears had absolutely no hint of annoyance or anger. He didn't know what Ashley was really hiding. Either the girl was no longer angry because she knew the limits of their relationship. Or, she was completely ignoring him.Their relationship deteriorated after the trip from Paris. And it got worse when his accidental encounter with Ashley's mother happened. Then it got even worse when he broke the appointment with Ashley's parents, and didn't come back at all until today. Without giving any information.Josh did say that he had some business that required him to go out of town. But he couldn't even be sure whether Ashley believed him, or maybe not.Either way, the worst thing Josh had done was to lie and never give any news after that.“Are you angry? Because I didn't come home?”Ashley snorted with a laugh, “No.”Then the elevator doors in front of them opened.Ashle

Josh was true to his word to Sharon. That he would stay near her all the time.He didn't dare to go anywhere at all. Even when he needed to take a shower, he would choose a time when Sharon was sleeping. Even so, he still couldn't leave the girl for too long as he cleaned up as quickly as he could. Guilt and regret gnawed at his heart fiercely. Until his subconscious seemed to make him feel guilty if he relaxed his supervision of Sharon. His days during Sharon's stay in the hospital were spent only accompanying and caring for the girl. Josh left all work matters to his deputy and secretary completely without wanting to be disturbed or bothered. He didn't even think of contacting Ashley. His communication with Ashley completely stopped after the conversation on the phone when he asked for that girl’s help to pack his clothes.Anyone who knew this would definitely think that Josh was crazy. But the truth is that he was crazy. He couldn't forgive himself for almost taking the life of his
There was a brief moment of awkwardness before they ended their brief conversation.Josh knew he was guilty of not being able to keep the promise he had made. And Ashley was probably having a hard time yesterday to bear it all by herself without knowing why and what happened because Josh didn't inform her at all. But yesterday was really too difficult and complicated for him. He didn't even remember the lunch appointment with his mother-in-law until just a few moments ago when he saw Ashley's figure. The incident with Sharon had completely taken away all of his sanity. And it was all beyond his control. Clearly, at the moment, Josh still couldn't divide his mind to resolve what happened between him and Ashley. Because his heart and mind are still full of regret and guilt that feels very excruciating.Later. Later, when Sharon's condition was stable enough and the situation he was facing was calm again, he would try to explain it slowly to Ashley. He thought Ashley would understand be
At first, Josh thought he had misheard. But the distance between where Ashley was sitting and the door of the room was not far. And the room wasn't that big either. So it was enough to allow him to hear any sound that came from inside, even if it was a bit soft.Josh tilted his head again while looking through the clear glass on the door. From where he was, he could only see Ashley's back. The face and figure lying in front of the girl was covered by her body. But several medical machines and many cords that looked interconnected and hanging there were quite clearly visible. Also some of the little things the girl did—rubbing the face of the patient lying there, and adjusting the patient's clothes and blanket—could be clearly captured by his eyes. Ashley’s words that she spoke again could also be heard well by Josh's ears.“I know I shouldn't have complained to you. But now, no one can listen to me, Mom. In the past, there was Mrs. Go who was always the one I talked to about things. S
PRESENT DAY“Thank you Mr. Jung,” Josh took the small paper bag that his secretary handed him. This morning he realized that he had gone out yesterday without his cell phone. The panic that attacked him due to the incident with Sharon automatically blinded and dulled all his thoughts and common sense. The last time he held his cell phone was in his room before the meeting. He turned off the voice mode and put his cell phone in the drawer because he felt too dizzy to face Sharon. Little did he know that he would be forced to accept the enormous consequences of his actions.Regret still hung around, shaking, and terrorizing him until this moment. And he allowed himself to be gnawed by it. Because he thought he deserved to be tortured by the pain that was brutally punching him in his heart and head. Even if he punched himself physically for punishment, it felt like it wouldn't be enough to make up for what he had done. Josh would never be able to forgive himself. For if only, yesterday h
Ashley searched through tons of articles about her family, Josh's family, and what incidents had happened all this time.Ever since she was forced to return to Auckland, the pain in her heart made her not want to know anything about anything concerning her family. She seemed to leave everything behind. That's why she really didn't know anything. Her head was throbbing with pain when she finally ended her search and closed her phone. The news she had just gotten made her shoulders slump instantly. It was as if her energy and life had evaporated without a trace.Until a knock on her bedroom door finally woke Ashley up from her empty reverie."Miss, it's me. I brought you a snack."Mrs. Go's voice came from behind the door.“Yes, come in,” Ashley said, and the woman walked in.She walked over to Ashley who was sitting in front of her dressing table. She placed the tray she was carrying on the empty part of the table."You didn't come down for breakfast earlier. Mrs. Gu got nagged because
Ashley jerked her head as she almost thought what she just heard was wrong.“I had no intention of refusing this marriage plan from the start.”“Wait,” Ashley felt her throat become very bitter and dry instantly, “You want to do this marriage?”“Yes” Josh then split the crab stuffed mushroom on his plate into two small pieces and ate it. Ignoring Ashley's gaze who was still stunned by his answer just now."Why? We don't know each other that well. Haven't seen each other in a very long time. I'm also sure you don't like me.""We can take things slowly. And I think our history is more than enough to start a relationship. There have been no fights or problems between us as long as I can remember, right?"Josh was wrong. The man was lying as if Ashley didn't know about an incident in the past that could pretty well illustrate how cold Josh felt towards her. And that created a big problem for Ashley having to bear the pain alone.Ashley sank into her confusion again, then mumbled without f
Ashley was stunned for a long time. And when Josh moved to move the chair back so she could sit down, that's when she returned to her senses. Her legs automatically moved closer to sit on the chair. She quietly inhaled and exhaled very slowly and carefully.Behind her confusion and nervousness that suddenly attacked her, there was a very odd feeling that somehow also sneaked into her heart at that moment. How could someone she once liked, who had never seen her as a girl, who she wanted to forget... was now sitting in front of her as her future husband.Josh returned to his seat across from Ashley, still with his thin smile that was hard to translate. “I've ordered food,” he raised his hand as he turned to one of the waiters standing not far from them for a signal. The waiter who caught Josh's instruction responded with a small nod and disappeared into a doorway.“Your favorite signature set,” Josh continued.Ashley, who had been following Josh's gaze, turned her head and looked at h
