Chapter 3

Rain POV:

It's been almost a week since I've run away from my old pack, and my mate, sometimes I just want to run back, but every time I stop myself because I know that there might be a chance that I run into my old pack, and I'm scared what they would do to me once they realize that I've run away. Every time I think about my mate and how I just left my chest hurts, and Whisper starts to whimper in the back of my mind thinking that they won't like us because we ran away from them, and not towards them. Every time I have to remind him that I didn't know and that we weren't running from them we were running from our old alpha and that we were going to look for them once we get to a safer location, this always seemed to calm him down, but not for long because minutes later he would start back up again.

I've been walking along this river for almost a week and I have yet to run into any sign of civilization. I have been following the river and I haven't seen anything that lets me know that there is anyone that lives anywhere near here.

"Should I just stop following the river, and pray that I run into civilization at some point?" I think to myself, standing there looking in front of me then to my left at the forest that goes off into the unknown.

"No, you should stay by the river, it hides your scent, you don't know who could be following us, and it'll just make it easier for them to find us if we walk away from the river, plus I feel like we'll find something good up ahead of us if we keep walking", Whisper says back to me, I sigh and shake my head at what he says, but I don't argue with him and just continue to walk along the river. If he says that something good will happen then I will continue ahead, because he would never put me in any dangerous situations. Plus, he is right, if there is anyone following us, or my old pack noticed that I left and they are coming for me then it'll just be easier for them to find me the farther I get from the river.

After walking I heard some splashing and the sound of rushing water, and my curiosity got the better of me and I walked away from the river and towards the sound. I pulled some leaves from the low trees out of the way and I am just mesmerized by the sight that I see. In front of me, there is a breathtaking view, there is a massive waterfall that leads into a huge lake. All around the lake are different types of plants and animals. I crouch down and slowly walk towards the lake trying not to scare the animals that are there, enjoying their time at the lake. As I get to the lake's edge I sit down and take off my shoes and roll up the bottom part of the legs of my pants and put my feet into the water and just relax there and enjoy the view of all the animals. After sitting there for a couple of minutes and enjoying the view, I feel something bump into my hand. I open my eyes and look at my hand to see a baby deer standing there looking back at me. I smile and slowly pick up my hand and hold it in front of the fawn, trying not to scare it away. It stands there and looks at my hand and sniffs and once the fawn deems that I am not a threat, it leans against my hand and I smile and pet the fawn's head. After a couple of minutes of sitting there petting the fawn's head, it was laying down with its head on my leg and it was cuddling its body into the side of my leg. I guess their parents call them over and look at me, and then back at their baby and turn and walk away, I smile watching them walk away.

"Well, that was just cute wasn't it?" I hear a mysterious voice say from behind me. I turn around and someone walks out of the bushes. All the animals that were left by the lake took off in a run once he emerged from the forest. Once our eyes locked together, his lips went up in a smirk and all the hairs on the back of my neck stood up. Whisper stood at attention ready for an attack that may or may not come. I turned around so my body was fully facing him, I looked towards the woods, trying to see if there was a way that I could run away, I knew that I wouldn't be able to beat him in a fight.

"What's wrong, little rogue? Scared?" He walked towards me. I didn't say anything. I just turned my eyes back towards him and paid attention to every move he made, and he did the same. We were at a standstill, me watching him and him watching me, it was silent and no one dared to speak, but right when he was about to say something, there was a loud howl and the pounding on the forest floor.

"What now?" I think to myself, scared that it was going to be something bad this time. But by the way, the Whisper was acting. I knew that it wasn't something that was bad, at least for me. The wolf in front of me growls and starts to walk towards me and once I notice this I start to walk back but I'm stopped when I feel the water touch my feet, I look down and I realize that I am ankle-deep in the water, I look back up and see the man still coming at me but this time with a smirk playing on his face, knowing that I have nowhere to go. I look around me trying to find someplace for me to go so that I can escape his grasp.

"There's nowhere for you to go, little rogue," He says as he gets closer and closer to the water. There is another loud howl and a couple of growls coming from the forest. He stops walking, and looks back at the woods, he growls and turns back towards me, and starts to walk towards me faster. He gets within arm's reach and even tries to grab my arm, but before he could he is tackled to the ground by a big wolf, there is then even more wolves that come out of the woods, and there is an even bigger one that came out and stood in front of the man that tried to attack me.

"MATE" Whisper shouts in my head and I look towards the big wolf and he turns his head back towards me, when he feels me staring at his back, it is then that I realize that he is the wolf that I saw when I was running away from my old pack. The wolf in front of me shifted back into his human form, and let me tell you, he was breathtakingly handsome. All the other wolves with him shifted back and some shorts were handed out to the wolves.

"Why did you attack me, I was just taking what I found," the man that attacked me said, from still under the wolf that tackled him to the ground, looking from my mate to me and a visible shiver went down my spine.

"Yes, but you made the mistake of trying to take my mate," My mate says back to the man.

"Your mate?" The man asks with a look of surprise and, I may be wrong, but I think I sensed a hint of fear in his tone.

"Yes, my mate," my mate replied.

"If he's your mate then why was he just wandering around the forest without protection, you know that there are other rogues other than me and you wandering around in these woods," the man says back with a bit of confidence and I could tell that my mate didn't like that because he lunged towards the man and grabbed him by the throat and picked him up.

"Don't you think I knew that? That's why I had some of my pack warriors following him, and keeping me updated on his whereabouts until he got to me". My mate says to him pulling the man towards his face. The man starts to shake and I don't know if it's because of the grip that my mate has on him or if it's from the fear that he is currently feeling.

"Take him back to the dungeons," my mate says, to some other people that are standing off in the distance, after sighing, he hands the man over to them and he starts to shake his head and yelling something but he is too far away for me to make out what he is saying. Once they are out of viewing range my mate turns to me with a smile on his face and walks up to me and picks me up bridal style and I let out a little squeak, causing him to let out a small chuckle, I don't know why but that chuckle sounded so heavenly that I just want to hear it over and over again. I look at him and my face feels hot letting me know that I am currently blushing. I look up at him and realize that he is looking down at me with a smirk, I feel my blush deepen and I hide my face in his bare chest.

"What is your name, little mate?" My mate asks and I risk looking back up at him, from under my lashes, to see him still looking down at me.

"Rain," I say, still hiding my face in his chest.

"Rain," He says, testing it out, and I feel a shiver go down my back, and not a bad one at that.

"What's your name?" I ask looking back up at him to see him looking ahead of us with a smile on his face.

"Rex," He says and I smile, finally knowing my mates' name.

"Rex" I repeat just like he did with my name.

"I like that way my name sounds when coming out of your mouth," Rex says looking down at me with a smile that just caused my smile to widen even more.

"I liked it too," I say, and he lets out another chuckle. After a couple of minutes of Rex walking and him just carrying me I let out a yawn.

"Get some rest little one, we'll talk when we get back to our house," Rex says when he notices me yawning. I nod my head smiling when he says 'our house'. I lean my head on his chest and listen to his heartbeat and let it lull me to sleep.

"Hmm" I scrunch up my face when the blissful sleep that I was just experiencing starts to drift away from me. I open my eyes and lay there until the sleep fully leaves my eyes. I pull the blankets that were covering me off my body and look around the unfamiliar room. I shrink back into the bed, but then I sigh remembering the events that took place earlier that day. I look around the room and get up off the bed, once my feet hit the cold hard floor, I grab the blanket from off the bed and wrap it around my body.

I looked around the room for any sign of my mate, but there was no sign that he was in the room or had been in the room for some time. I turn around and walk towards the big window that is by the bed. I walk up to it and smile at the sight.

"Wow" I whisper, there are people walking around and lights from the fires scattered around lighting up the night so people can see. There are kids running around and their parents are not far behind them.

"I can't wait for that to be me and my mate," I think as I smile down at them, and thoughts of are little kids running around playing with the others, while I sit and watch and my mate chases after them.

"That's far in the future Rain, gosh we're not even mated yet and I'm already thinking about our kids," I think after catching myself before I get too far into my daydream. I laugh, shake my head and turn around and let out a small squeak.

"Gosh, don't do that you scared me," I say looking at my mate trying to look angry at him for scaring me.

"Sorry, I was just amazed looking at you," He says after a chuckle from my efforts to stay mad at him. I turn back around and look out the window and watch the people laughing and playing.

"What are you looking at little mate?" I hear my mate whisper from behind me causing a little shiver to run down my spine.

"Oh just looking out at the people, and thinking," I say after a second, I continue looking out the window when I hear my mate hum after a little time has passed.

"About?" My mate asks and I can hear the smile playing on his face. I turn to look at him and to see him looking at me, the smile on his face causes a smile to befall on my own.

"The future," I say, turning back to look out the window. I look at him from the corner of my eye and I can see a shocked expression on his face. After a couple of seconds, I see a smile find its way onto his face and I can already guess what he's thinking and it is exactly what I was thinking of.

"And what was in that future that you were thinking of?" He asks, I let out a small laugh knowing that he knows what it is already but he just wants to hear me say it out loud.

"You'll just have to wait and see I guess" I reply with a smirk, turning and walking over to the bed and sitting down on it.

"Oh, I can't wait," he says, walking over to me and sitting down on the bed next to me. I can feel the heat radiating off him and it makes my conscience of how close we are to each other, but I don't really mind. He grabs my arm and pulls me even closer to him so that our arms are touching and I feel the sparks that tell me that without a doubt that this man is my mate. 

And I couldn't have picked a better one at that.
