TORREN

It seemed like Eryn had given up on the idea of finding the person that had diverted our son's treatment fund but I knew that I couldn't give up on it too.

If I wanted to get her back, I had to find out that much so I had to keep investigating.

Plus though the attack had been saved by Eryn's friend, there are still a few things I needed to confirm so I kept digging.

These days, she seemed too engrossed in work. It was as though she had made it the fiber of her being and didn't lift her head or stand up unless it was work related.

I had moved her office closer to mine so I could keep an eye on her but even at that, nothing seemed to get the both of us closer to each other.

My hands worked over the keyboard till it became numb and all I could do was stretch my fingers and continue.

I had also moved Kael's office to share mine because he was the only one I could trust to help me in the investigation.

ERYN Nothing scares me anymore. I didn't realize I was clutching the envelope that they had given me that tightly until I felt my nails digging into my palm. Talk about self harm without even realizing that I was doing it. Modesty was a bitch. I was no longer tied to Torren so I should have slapped Claudia when she mentioned that I didn't take enough care of Niko, rudely implying that I caused my son's death. I should have grabbed her hair and smashed her perfect face into their glass table and know what she thought of that. Since they saw me as a bad mother and someone they can trample on, I should have made sure she ate her words. But I didn't do any of that and now wasn't the time to regret or reminisce on what I should have done. After all, I was finally away from Torren's family. I was finally free. Niko. I'm so sorry baby, I didn't protect you enough. I made my way to the office, managing to make it in time. Thank goodness, Claudia and her husband hadn't kept

RHYSARIO VALE “Have you been having a hard time getting another assistant after Miss Eryn resigned?” Doctor Brown suddenly asked as I got out of the theatre heading to my office. I hate nosy people. I detest noisy people. And doctor Brown was the exact kind of species I detest. He was always trying to talk, trying to make a conversation. Always. It was as though he never stopped talking. For a doctor? If I was a patient, I'd probably die from all his talking. “No.” I answered straightforwardly, hoping he would get the hint that I didn't wish to continue the conversation with him in any way. “I’m just saying that if you are, you could recommend a few that—” He continued and I had no choice but to stop him from talking immediately. “No! I said, no. I'm not having a hard time getting an assistant. If you don't mind Brown, I have a patient to check in on.” I said, retracting my footsteps as I went to check in on Eryn's father. His treatment was going smoothly but due to how late t

RHYSARIO VALE The leave request tastes like metal in my mouth. “One week,” I tell administration, voice flat because a week is the longest I can ask without raising questions. “Medical leave. Family emergency.” They nod. They always nod when the surgeon who saves lives asks for time. Paperwork slides across the desk like a lie I have to sign. Brown offers a smile that reads pity and curiosity in equal parts. I take it because answering would be worse than lying. Back in my office I pack like I’m already leaving the battlefield: two shirts, a jacket, a small kit of tools, some cash sewn into a seam, a notebook filled with names and arrows. My hands move on habit. Moving calms the tremor in my chest. Thinking doesn’t. Eryn called me Rhysario today. She refuses to meet my eyes. She pulls herself away like I’m something contagious. And there’s a child. A name keeps looping in my head until it’s a wound: Niko Valek Storm. I swipe my phone from the desk and dial a number I never hav

RHYSARIO VALE. “You're one of our best surgeons here, Rhysario. If you go on leave, it would have a huge impact on the company.” HR protested and I rolled my eyes. I wasn't one of the best, I was the best. Besides, I had never asked for leave before so what would have happened if it turned out that I was actually wanting to resign. “I'm not asking. I'm just informing, I've never taken a single day of free or paid leave but this week, I need it. It's a family emergency.” I lied to the administration and they just stared at me before shaking heads in agreement while Brown just offered a smile that read pity and curiosity in equal parts. It was as though he was holding back from asking me something and honestly? I wish that he would just keep shut and definitely not ask. And that reminds me, why the hell does it seem like Brown is always hovering everywhere I am right now? “Fine. One week, that's what you get, Rhysario.” The paperwork was slided over to me and I signed while they no
