THE ALPHA'S FORBIDDEN BRIDE

The wind howled through the towering pine trees, carrying with it the scent of damp earth and coming rain. Moonlight filtered through the thick branches, painting silver streaks across the forest floor.

Aria Bennett ran.

Her lungs burned with every breath, and sharp branches tore at her sleeves as she pushed deeper into the darkness. Twigs snapped beneath her worn boots, each crack echoing through the silent forest.

"Don't let her get away!"

The shout came from behind.

She didn't dare look back.

Her heart pounded so hard she thought it might burst through her chest. Every instinct screamed at her to keep moving.

Just hours earlier, she had been walking home from her late shift at the small diner in Ashwood, worrying about overdue rent and the stack of unpaid bills waiting on her kitchen table.

Now strangers were hunting her.

She had never seen them before.

Three black SUVs had pulled onto the lonely road without warning. Men dressed in dark clothing stepped out, their faces hidden beneath hoods.

One of them pointed directly at her.

"There she is."

Fear had taken over before reason could.

She ran.

They chased.

She left the road, climbed over a broken fence, and disappeared into the forest.

But they never stopped following.

Rain began to fall, soft at first, then harder.

Cold drops soaked her hair and blurred her vision.

She stumbled over a tree root and crashed to the ground. Pain shot through her knee.

"No..."

She forced herself back to her feet.

The voices were closer now.

"Spread out!"

"She can't have gone far!"

Aria bit her lip to keep herself from crying.

Why were they after her?

She wasn't rich.

She wasn't famous.

She had no family left.

After her parents died in a mysterious car accident five years ago, life had become a constant struggle. She worked double shifts, skipped meals to save money, and lived alone in a tiny apartment that barely kept out the winter cold.

She was just... ordinary.

Or so she had always believed.

A strange chill swept through the forest.

Everything became quiet.

Too quiet.

Even the insects had stopped making noise.

Aria slowed, confused.

The men behind her had also gone silent.

Then she heard it.

A long, deep howl.

It echoed across the mountains, sending a shiver down her spine.

One howl became two.

Then five.

Then dozens.

The forest had awakened.

The men chasing her froze.

One of them whispered in terror,

"We crossed the border..."

Another answered,

"No... this is Blackwood territory."

Their confident voices disappeared, replaced by panic.

Aria didn't understand what they meant.

She only knew that the expressions on their faces had changed.

Hunters had suddenly become prey.

A pair of glowing golden eyes appeared between the trees.

Then another.

And another.

Large shadows stepped silently from the darkness, surrounding everyone.

Aria held her breath.

They looked like wolves.

But no normal wolf stood nearly as tall as a horse or possessed eyes that glowed like molten gold beneath the moonlight.

One enormous black wolf emerged from the trees.

Unlike the others, he didn't growl.

He simply stared at Aria.

The moment their eyes met, something strange happened.

A warm pulse spread through her chest.

The wolf froze.

His ears lifted.

His nose twitched as though catching a scent that should not exist.

Then, for the first time in generations, the massive black wolf stood motionless.

Rain dripped from his thick midnight-colored fur as his golden eyes remained locked on the trembling young woman before him. Around him, the other wolves lowered their heads, sensing something they could not yet understand.

Aria could barely breathe.

The creature was unlike anything she had ever seen. It was taller than any wolf should be, its broad shoulders rippling with power, and his gaze carried an intelligence that sent a chill down her spine.

Behind her, one of the hooded men raised a trembling hand.

"There she is! Grab her!"

None of the wolves moved.

Instead, the black wolf slowly turned his head toward the man.

His expression—if a wolf could have one—changed from curiosity to cold fury.

The air itself seemed to grow heavier.

A low growl rolled through the forest.

It wasn't loud.

It didn't need to be.

Every wolf in the clearing immediately lowered itself in submission.

Even the armed men instinctively stepped backward.

"What... what is that?" one whispered.

Another swallowed hard.

"The Alpha..."

Before Aria could ask what they meant, the black wolf sprang forward.

He moved so quickly that she saw only a blur of black.

A scream shattered the night.

One hunter's weapon flew from his hands as he crashed into a tree several meters away. The remaining men scattered in panic, but they were already surrounded.

From every direction, wolves emerged from the darkness.

Their glowing eyes reflected in the rain like dozens of burning lanterns.

Within moments, the hunters realized escape was impossible.

"Retreat!" their leader shouted.

No one listened.

Fear had stolen their courage.

Aria stood frozen, unable to tear her eyes away from the enormous black wolf.

He never attacked her.

Instead, he placed himself between her and the strangers, his body acting as a living shield.

His golden eyes met hers again.

This time, something strange happened.

A warmth spread through Aria's chest.

Her racing heartbeat slowed.

For reasons she couldn't explain, the terror she had felt only moments ago began to fade.

The wolf took one careful step toward her.

Then another.

His ears remained relaxed.

His gaze held no hunger.

Only curiosity.

Only... recognition.

Aria's hand trembled as she slowly lifted it.

"What... are you?"

The wolf stopped.

The forest fell silent.

Then a blinding silver light erupted around him.

Aria gasped.

The giant wolf disappeared beneath the light.

When it faded, a man stood where the beast had been.

Tall.

Broad-shouldered.

Dark hair clung to his rain-soaked forehead.

His piercing golden eyes were exactly the same as the wolf's.

He looked no older than thirty, yet carried himself with the confidence of someone born to command.

Every wolf in the clearing bowed their heads.

"My Alpha," they murmured.

Aria stumbled backward.

Her mind refused to accept what she had just witnessed.

"You..."

She pointed at him.

"You were the wolf."

The man studied her quietly.

"Yes."

His voice was deep and calm.

"Who are you?" she whispered.

"I am Kael Blackwood."

The name meant nothing to her.

But the wolves around him reacted with unmistakable respect.

Kael took another slow step.

"I won't hurt you."

Aria wanted to believe him.

She really did.

But everything happening tonight defied reason.

Men had chased her through the forest.

Giant wolves had appeared from nowhere.

One of them had transformed into a human before her eyes.

Nothing in her world made sense anymore.

Before she could respond, one of Kael's warriors hurried forward.

"My Alpha," the warrior said, keeping his head lowered. "The intruders have been captured."

Kael never looked away from Aria.

"Question them."

"And if they refuse to speak?"

A dangerous silence settled over the clearing.

"Then they have chosen their fate."

The warrior nodded and disappeared into the darkness.

Aria stared at Kael.

"You... you're going to kill them?"

His expression remained unreadable.

"They entered my territory with weapons."

"They were chasing me."

"I know."

"You don't even know who I am."

Kael's golden eyes softened almost imperceptibly.

"I know enough."

Aria frowned.

"What does that mean?"

For the first time since meeting her, Kael hesitated.

His wolf had already recognized the impossible truth.

She was his mate.

But she was human.

A human.

The very thing the ancient prophecy had forbidden.

Far beyond the clearing, thunder rolled across the mountains.

Kael looked toward the dark sky.

He had a terrible feeling.
