Chapter thirty nine.

Evelyn's POV.

My head felt heavy as I struggled to open my eyes. Finally, I managed to pry them open and found Alex sitting across from me.

As soon as he saw I was awake, he stood up and walked over to my bed.

"How are you feeling?" he asked. I tried to sit up, but he gently held me down.

He removed a cold towel from my forehead, and I raised my eyebrows in surprise.

My gaze met Alex's, and he explained, "You fainted last night."

I could only manage a soft "ohh" before collapsing back onto the bed, feeling overwhelmed. Being around him felt awkward.

Then, Alex said, "Open your mouth," and my gaze snapped to him. He was holding a thermometer, which he placed under my tongue. After a moment, he removed it.

"Your temperature is normal now," he said, and I nodded, laying back down.

I could sense he wanted to say something more, but I wasn't interested. Given our situation, I didn't want to be friends with Alex – ever.
