Chapter 22: The Pack's Welcome

Three days had passed since the battle.

Three days of burying the dead, tending the wounded, and trying to process the fact that they had survived something that should have killed them all. The camp had slowly transformed from a battlefield into something almost resembling a community—tents pitched, fires lit, routines established.

But Lena still felt like a stranger.

She moved among the wolves—Kael's pack—with careful steps, watching the way they looked at her. Some with curiosity. Some with suspicion. A few with something that looked almost like fear.

"They're not sure what to make of you," Kael admitted that morning. They stood at the edge of the camp, watching the sun rise over the mountains. "A hybrid. Part wolf, part vampire. It's... unusual."

"Unusual." Lena laughed without humor. "That's one word for it."

Kael turned her to face him, his golden eyes soft. "They'll come around. Give them time."

"Do I have a choice?"

"No." He kissed her forehead. "But neither do they. I'm their alpha. And I've chosen you."

---

The welcome ceremony was scheduled for that evening.

Lena spent the day preparing—or rather, trying not to think about preparing. Caspian found her by the river, staring at her reflection in the water.

"Nervous?"

"Terrified." She looked up at him. "What if they reject me? What if they can't accept a hybrid as their alpha's mate?"

"Then they're fools." Caspian sat beside her, his cool presence calming. "And Kael will deal with them."

"That's what I'm afraid of. I don't want him to have to choose between me and his pack."

Caspian was quiet for a moment. Then: "He's already chosen, Lena. The night he met you, he chose. Everything since then has just been him living with that choice."

Lena leaned against him, grateful for his steady presence. "What about you? Do you ever regret it? Getting tangled up with a hybrid and a wolf?"

"Every day." But he was smiling—that rare, beautiful smile. "And I'd do it again. In a heartbeat."

---

The ceremony began at sunset.

The pack had gathered in a clearing deep in the forest—hundreds of wolves in human form, their eyes reflecting the firelight. Torches lined the perimeter, casting dancing shadows across the gathered crowd. Drums beat a steady rhythm that seemed to pulse in Lena's very blood.

Kael stood at the center, waiting for her.

He was magnificent—dressed in ceremonial leathers that accentuated every powerful line of his body. His hair had been pulled back, revealing the strong planes of his face. When he saw Lena approaching, his golden eyes lit with something that made her heart skip.

Lena had dressed simply—a flowing white dress that Caspian had somehow produced, her hair loose around her shoulders. The pendant Kael had given her weeks ago rested against her chest, warm and comforting.

"Lena." Kael took her hands as she reached him. "Thank you for being here."

"Where else would I be?"

He smiled—that warm, boyish smile that made him look almost young. "Ready?"

"As I'll ever be."

---

The ceremony was ancient and beautiful.

Elders of the pack stepped forward one by one, sharing stories of the pack's history, of Kael's parents, of the alpha line that stretched back centuries. They spoke of duty and honor and sacrifice. They spoke of love.

Then it was Lena's turn.

"Lena," Kael said, his voice carrying across the silent clearing. "Do you come to us freely? Of your own will and choice?"

"I do." Her voice was steady, though her heart raced.

"Do you swear to protect this pack as your own? To honor our ways, defend our people, and stand with us against all enemies?"

"I do."

"Then by the authority given to me by the moon and by my ancestors, I claim you as my mate. My partner. My *equal*."

He placed a ceremonial collar around her neck—not a restraint, but a symbol. Woven from wolf fur and moonflowers, it marked her as his. As theirs.

The pack erupted in howls.

Lena felt tears prick her eyes as the sound washed over her—hundreds of wolves, welcoming her into their family. It was overwhelming and beautiful and *terrifying* all at once.

Kael pulled her into his arms and kissed her deeply, ignoring the cheers and catcalls from his pack. When he finally pulled back, he was grinning.

"Welcome to the family, mate."

---

The celebration that followed was wild and wonderful.

Wolves shifted and ran through the forest, their joy contagious. Others danced around the fires, drinking and laughing and *living*. Lena found herself pulled into the chaos, spinning from one partner to another, laughing harder than she had in weeks.

At one point, she found Caspian standing at the edge of the celebration, watching with an expression she couldn't read.

"What are you doing over here?" She tugged his hand. "Come dance with me."

"I'm not exactly welcome among wolves, Lena."

"You're welcome wherever I am." She pulled him toward the fire. "Besides, Kael's pack knows about you now. About *us*. If they're going to accept me, they have to accept all of me. And you're part of that."

Caspian hesitated, then allowed himself to be pulled into the celebration.

The wolves watched him warily at first—a vampire in their midst was unprecedented. But Kael's presence, and Lena's obvious affection, seemed to calm them. By the end of the night, Caspian had even managed to make a few of them smile.

"See?" Lena said, leaning against him as they watched the fire dance. "Not so scary."

"They're terrified of me."

"Maybe. But they're also curious. That's a start."

---

Later, Kael found them by the river.

The celebration continued in the distance, but here, away from the noise and the light, there was only peace. The moon reflected off the water, silver and beautiful. The stars wheeled overhead.

"Quite a night," Kael said, settling beside Lena.

"Quite a night." She leaned into him. "Thank you. For this. For everything."

"You're my mate, Lena. My family. You deserve to be welcomed properly."

Caspian sat on her other side, his cool presence a familiar comfort. "The pack seems to be adjusting."

"They'll adjust more." Kael looked at him—really looked. "You're part of this now too. Whether you like it or not."

Caspian's red eyes widened slightly. "I'm a vampire. In the midst of a wolf pack. That's—"

"Unprecedented. I know." Kael shrugged. "But so is loving the same woman as my former enemy. So is fighting beside you. So is *caring* whether you live or die." He paused. "Things change, Caspian. People change. I have."

Caspian was quiet for a long moment. Then, softly: "So have I."

Lena watched them—these two impossible men, enemies turned brothers, both bound to her by love. Her heart felt so full it might burst.

"I love you," she whispered. "Both of you. I don't know how this works, or what the future holds, but I know that. I love you."

Kael kissed her temple. "I love you too."

Caspian's hand found hers. "Forever."

They sat there for a long time, three souls bound by something greater than blood or tradition or history. Something that had no name but felt like *home*.

---

The night deepened.

Eventually, the celebration wound down. Wolves drifted back to their tents, their shifts, their families. The fires burned low. The forest settled into peaceful silence.

Lena, Kael, and Caspian made their way back to the cabin—the same cabin that had sheltered them through the battle, through the healing, through everything. It was still damaged, still scarred, but it was *theirs*.

"We should sleep," Kael said, though his eyes said something else entirely.

"We should." Lena's voice was soft. "But I'm not tired."

Caspian's lips curved. "Neither am I."

The air between them shifted—charged with something that had been building all night. The ceremony, the celebration, the *love*—it had all been leading to this.

Kael moved first, as he often did. His lips found Lena's, hungry and demanding, reminding her that she was his. That he was hers. That nothing could change that.

Behind her, Caspian's cool hands slid along her waist, pulling her closer. His lips traced the curve of her neck, sending shivers through her already heated skin.

Between them, Lena melted.

---

The night that followed was slow and perfect.

Kael undressed her with reverent hands, kissing every inch of skin as it was revealed. Caspian followed close behind, his cool lips a counterpoint to Kael's warmth. Together, they mapped her body like explorers discovering a new world.

When Kael laid her on the bed and entered her, Lena gasped his name like a prayer. When Caspian took his turn, she clung to Kael and let the waves of pleasure wash over her. And when they moved together, finding a rhythm that somehow worked despite everything, Lena understood that this—*this*—was what she'd been fighting for.

Not survival. Not victory. Not even peace.

*This*. Connection. Love. *Family*.

Afterward, they lay tangled together, breathing hard, hearts racing in unison.

"I love you," Kael whispered into her hair. "My mate. My heart. My *everything*."

"I love you too." Lena turned to Caspian. "Both of you. Forever."

Caspian's voice was thick with emotion. "Forever."

They held each other as the moon set and the stars began to fade. Tomorrow would bring new challenges, new dangers, new fears. But tonight—tonight was theirs.

Tonight, they were simply *together*.

---

Dawn broke gently over the mountains.

Lena woke to warmth on one side and cool on the other—Kael's arm draped across her waist, Caspian's hand resting on her hip. She smiled, not moving, wanting to savor this moment forever.

Then she heard the voices outside.

"...can't just let this happen. She's a hybrid. He's a *vampire*. It's wrong."

"The alpha has made his choice. We have to respect it."

"Respect it? He's putting us all at risk! Magnus may be gone, but others will come. And when they do, they'll see us—wolves—sharing territory with blood-suckers and abominations."

Lena's blood ran cold.

Kael was awake instantly, his golden eyes blazing. "Stay here," he growled.

But Lena was already rising. "No. If they have something to say about me, about us, I want to hear it."

Caspian sat up, his red eyes dark. "Lena—"

"I'm done hiding. I'm done letting others speak for me." She pulled on a dress and headed for the door. "If I'm going to be part of this pack, I need to face them. All of them."

Kael and Caspian exchanged a look—then followed.

---

The voices belonged to three wolves—older males, clearly influential in the pack. They fell silent as Lena approached, their eyes widening.

"You have something to say?" Lena's voice was calm, though her heart raced. "Say it. To my face."

The oldest of them—a grizzled wolf with silver-streaked hair—stepped forward. "You're a hybrid. Part vampire. You don't belong here."

"I belong wherever Kael wants me." Lena met his gaze steadily. "And Kael wants me here."

"She's right." Kael appeared beside her, his presence a wall of warmth and authority. "Lena is my mate. Chosen by me, accepted by the moon. Anyone who has a problem with that has a problem with me."

The wolves exchanged uneasy glances. The silver-haired one—Marcus, Lena remembered—spoke again. "Alpha, with respect, this isn't just about you. It's about the pack. About our future. About—"

"About fear." Caspian's voice cut through the tension like ice. He stood on Lena's other side, his red eyes fixed on Marcus. "You're afraid. Of me. Of her. Of what we represent. That's understandable. But fear is a poor counselor."

Marcus's eyes narrowed. "You have no right to speak here, vampire."

"He has every right." Kael's voice was steel. "Caspian is part of this family. Part of *my* family. If you can't accept that, you can leave."

The silence that followed was deafening.

Then, slowly, Marcus bowed his head. "I meant no disrespect, Alpha. I just—" He looked at Lena, at Caspian. "I don't understand."

"You don't have to understand." Lena's voice softened. "You just have to give us a chance. That's all any of us are asking."

Marcus was quiet for a long moment. Then, slowly, he nodded.

"One chance," he said. "That's all I can promise."

"It's enough."

---

The confrontation ended peacefully, but Lena knew it was just the beginning.

Later, back in the cabin, she sat between Kael and Caspian, processing what had happened.

"They'll come around," Kael said. "Give them time."

"And if they don't?"

"Then they answer to me." His voice was firm. "You're my mate, Lena. My priority. My *heart*. Nothing—and no one—will change that."

Caspian's hand found hers. "You handled that well. Better than I would have."

"Three hundred years alone teaches you patience." Lena managed a small smile. "Or so I've heard."

Caspian almost smiled. "Something like that."

They sat in comfortable silence for a while. Then Kael spoke again.

"There's something I need to tell you both. About the pack. About the future."

Lena tensed. "What?"

Kael's golden eyes were troubled. "Marcus wasn't wrong about one thing. Magnus may be gone, but others will come. The wolves who oppose us, the vampires who still serve Seraphine's memory—they won't stop. And when they do, they'll target the pack. Target *us*."

"Then we fight," Lena said simply. "Together."

"Together." Caspian nodded.

Kael looked at them—his mate, his former enemy turned brother, his *family*—and something in his expression shifted.

"I love you," he said quietly. "Both of you. I never thought I'd say that. Never thought I'd feel it. But I do."

Lena leaned into him. "We know."

Caspian's hand found Kael's. "We know."

For a moment, they were simply three souls, bound by love, facing an uncertain future together.

Then the door burst open.

---

A young wolf stood there, panting, his eyes wild with fear.

"Alpha!" he gasped. "You need to come. Now. There's someone at the border. Someone who claims to be—" He swallowed hard. "Claims to be Seraphine's true heir. And she's demanding to see Lena."

Lena's blood turned to ice.

Seraphine's heir. The one Caspian had mentioned. The cousin she'd never known existed.

"Alone," the wolf continued. "She says she'll only talk to Lena. Alone. Or she'll burn the forest to the ground."

Kael was on his feet instantly. "Absolutely not."

"I have to." Lena stood too, her heart pounding. "If she's here for me, I need to face her."

"Lena—" Caspian started.

"If I don't, people will die. Your pack will die." She looked at Kael. "I won't let that happen."

Kael's jaw tightened. "Then I'm coming with you. Hidden. Close enough to intervene if—"

"If she senses you, she'll attack. You know that." Lena touched his face gently. "Trust me. Please. I've survived this long."

The silence stretched, agonizing.

Then, slowly, Kael nodded. "If you're not back in an hour—"

"I'll be back." Lena kissed him. Kissed Caspian. "I promise."

She walked out the door before they could stop her.

---

The forest was dark and silent.

Lena moved through the trees, following the path the young wolf had described. Her heart raced, but her steps were steady. She was done running. Done hiding. Done letting others dictate her fate.

At the border, a figure waited.

She was beautiful—impossibly so. Dark hair, pale skin, eyes that held the same red glow as Seraphine's. But younger. Softer. *Almost* kind.

"Lena." Her voice was like honey and poison. "I've waited so long to meet you."

"And you are?"

"Your cousin." She smiled—a smile that didn't reach her eyes. "My name is Lilith. And I'm here to offer you a choice."

Lena's hand went to her pendant. "What choice?"

"Join me. Together, we can rule everything—the wolves, the vampires, the hybrids. Everything Seraphine wanted, we can have."

"And if I refuse?"

Lilith's smile widened. "Then I'll take everything you love. Starting with your wolf. Followed by your vampire. And I'll make sure you watch."

The air between them crackled with tension.

Lena met her cousin's gaze without flinching.

"Try it," she said quietly. "And see what happens."

Lilith laughed—a cold, beautiful sound.

"Oh, cousin," she murmured. "This is going to be *fun*."

The healers had done everything they could, but Selene's body was failing faster than their magic could repair. The visions had drained her of strength, of color, of the spark that had made her the pack's most revered priestess. Her skin was pale, almost translucent, and her storm-gray eyes had lost their sharpness, replaced by a distant, unfocused gaze that made Kael's chest ache every time he looked at her.She had refused to stay in the healers' tent, insisting on returning to her own cabin, where the walls held memories of Aldric and the fire kept her warm. Kael had carried her there himself, settling her into the bed she had shared with his father, propping her up with pillows so she could see the window and the forest beyond.

The attack on the settlement was not an isolated incident. In the weeks that followed, reports came in from across the pack's territory—rogue wolves attacking hunting parties, raiding supply caches, terrorizing isolated families. They moved with a coordination that suggested direction, purpose, someone pulling their strings from the shadows.Seraphine.Her name hung in the air whenever the elders gathered to discuss the attacks, a specter that no one could see but everyone could feel. She had been building her army for centuries, collecting wolves and vampires who were willing to serve her in exchange for power, and now she was turning that army toward the Northern Pack.

  • They Both Wanted Me   Chapter 136: The Vision of Lena

Selene's descriptions of the hybrid grew more detailed with each passing day, as if the moon was feeding her information in fragments, piece by piece, like breadcrumbs leading Kael toward a destination he couldn't yet see. Lena was not just a woman with golden eyes and dark hair. She was a librarian, living in a small apartment in a city called Lychwood, surrounded by books she used to escape a life that had given her nothing. She had no family, no friends, no one who would notice if she disappeared. She was twenty-two years old when the moon first showed her to Selene, though the visions jumped forward and backward in time, showing her as a child, as an adolescent, as the woman she would become. She had been passed between foster homes throughout her childhood, never staying anywhere long enough to form attachments, never bein

It drifted through the trees, thin and distant, carried on a wind that smelled of smoke and blood. Kael's heart lurched in his chest. He had heard wolves scream before—in battle, in grief, in the final moments of a life violently ended. But this was different. This was a whole settlement screaming."The western camp," Torvin said, his voice tight. "They're attacking the western camp."Kael didn't hesitate.
