Chapter 1

ผู้เขียน: Three Goats
I stood outside the chapel, watching the wedding ceremony. The familiar pain surged through my body, but even that couldn't mask the agony in my heart.

It was all fake. Everything was a big, fat lie.

While I was forced to hide out in an abandoned clinic, afraid to eat even one extra bite of food, all they could think about was how to make sure Eliza Ward had no regrets in life.

I walked home in a daze, as if my soul had left my body.

Once upon a time, my parents and my older brother, Owen Ward, had doted on me, too. However, everything changed ten years ago, when Eliza was taken in as my adopted younger sister.

They said she was an orphan and had suffered enough, so they took it upon themselves to give her everything that belonged to me, from the toys and clothes they bought to the best education money could buy. And now, they had even given her my fiancé, Andrew Harris.

When I returned to the home I knew so well, everything seemed just as it had always been. The living room was spotless, but every trace of me had disappeared.

I glanced at the beautiful wedding cake on the dining table and let out a self-deprecating laugh.

Behind me, the front door swung open. Andrew walked in, holding Eliza's hand. She was still wearing a wedding tiara. Mom and Owen followed behind her, holding the train of her wedding gown.

All four of them froze when they saw me standing in the middle of the living room.

Mom was the first to approach. She touched my icy hand and asked, "Sophia, how did you get out?"

Her voice was gentle but laced with surprise, as though I wasn't supposed to be here.

"There was never an apocalypse, was there?"

I looked into her eyes, my voice barely above a whisper.

Owen stepped forward and patted my head, just as he always had. "You saw everything, didn't you, Sophia? I know it wasn't right to keep this from you, but Ellie doesn't have much time left. She's an orphan. Her only dying wish is simply to experience what it's like to have family and a loved one by her side."

His voice was full of sympathy. It was as if even the slightest objection from me would prove that I was being unreasonable and throwing a ridiculous fit.

"So, you lied to me about the apocalypse and hid me in an abandoned clinic? Do you have any idea what kind of life I was living there?" I questioned.

I struggled to keep my voice from trembling while desperately trying to hold back my tears.

Afraid of becoming a burden to them, I'd given the only flask of hot water available to Mom, who claimed that she'd become especially sensitive to the cold after awakening her powers. Then I'd curled into a ball and endured every freezing, agonizing night on my own.

Andrew came over and straightened my slightly disheveled clothes. "Sophia, stop being so immature. We're just fulfilling your sister's dying wish. As her older sister, you should be a little more understanding. She's been diagnosed with terminal pancreatic cancer. She's already suffered enough."

His tone was unmistakably impatient, making it seem as if my trembling and hurt feelings were nothing more than a childish temper tantrum.

Eliza's eyes reddened, and she shrank into Andrew's arms.

"I'm sorry, Sophia. This is all my fault. It's my fault I was born into such unfortunate circumstances and wanted so badly to experience familial and romantic love. If you hate me that much, I'll just go. It's not like I have much time left anyway."

Mom immediately pulled her into a comforting embrace, her heart aching for her. "Don't be ridiculous, Ellie! We chose to make you part of this family, and you'll always be our daughter."

Then she turned to me with a frown. "Ellie is dying, and you still want to drive her out of the house? Sophia, I think we've spoiled you so much growing up that you've never learned to consider the suffering of others!"

I watched as the three of them shielded Eliza protectively behind them. All I saw in their eyes were accusations and disapproval.

"I've been spoiled too much, huh?" I wanted to laugh, but my throat tightened painfully, and the taste of blood rose in my mouth. I heard how hoarse and faint my voice was. "Am I not the one who's about to die?"

"Stop lying!" Mom snapped sternly. "Have you forgotten that we raised you ourselves? You think we don't know how healthy you've been all your life? You can't fake a medical condition just because you're jealous of Ellie and see that she's sick, too. How can you be so ridiculous?"

Owen shook his head in disappointment. "Sophia, can you please stop pretending to be sick? I've been so busy with the wedding preparations lately that I haven't even had a chance to rest! I'll take you out for some fun in a few days, okay, so can you just stop making a fuss until then?"

Ever since we were children, whenever Eliza and I got into an argument, everyone in the family always assumed I was the one being unreasonable and that I was just jealous of her.

It was no different this time. Even when I told the truth, they still thought I was lying.

Andrew pulled out his phone and checked the time. "It's almost time. We still have to host the wedding reception.

"Sophia, just stay home and reflect on yourself. No one is going to keep putting up with your lies forever."

They swiftly escorted Eliza back out of the house.

Just before the door closed, she shot me one last look. Gone was the hurt and aggrievedness in her eyes. All that remained was the smugness of triumphant victory.

Standing in the empty house, I let out yet another self-deprecating laugh.

"Who cares if you don't believe me? I'm dying soon enough anyway."

Owen and Andrew immediately caught Mom and helped her to a hospital bed to get some rest. When Owen came out of the hospital room, his eyes were bloodshot, and his hands were clenched into fists."Where's Eliza?"Andrew stood beside him. "She didn't come with us. She said she was sick and needed to rest."Owen let out a laugh, his voice hoarse. "Sophia was the one who was sick. Why would Eliza need any rest?"When they returned home, Owen played the surveillance footage in front of Eliza. Her face grew paler and paler. With tears in her eyes, she tried to excuse her actions the way she always used to."I didn't mean for things to turn out this way. You both know how terrible my circumstances were. I never received any love, and it's all I long for. How could I not get jealous when I saw how much you guys doted on Sophia? I…"Sophia got to have everything she could possibly want from the moment she was born! Why did she get to enjoy such a good life? All I wanted was to experienc

Mom jerked her head up, her gaze sharp as it fell on Eliza. "You lied? You don't have pancreatic cancer?"Eliza looked panicked. "How could that be, Mom? You know I've always been sensible and well-behaved. I'm not like Sophia. Why would I ever lie to you guys?"Owen turned his gaze to Eliza as well. Something seemed to occur to him, and his expression shifted."If you have pancreatic cancer, why did you willingly drink alcohol that day?"Someone with cancer couldn't possibly drink alcohol.Eliza's eyes reddened again. "I thought you knew why, Owen. I only did it because I was so happy that day. After all, I can't live for much longer anyway. I know you're all sad because of Sophia's death, but… My days are numbered, too…"Silence fell over the dining table once more.Eliza turned to Dr. Fleming. "I really don't understand why you're accusing me of lying. The test results proved that I have pancreatic cancer. My family loves me so much. What reason would I have to lie to them?"

Mom frowned. "What's wrong?"She shoved Owen aside and tried her best to pull me up from the floor. However, my body was as rigid as a rotting log of wood. My hands were ice-cold, without the slightest trace of warmth. The horrifying possibility that popped into Mom's head made her stumble backward.Just then, Dr. Fleming entered the room. He took out a flashlight with one hand and gently lifted my eyelid with the other. The light shone into my pupil, but there was no reaction. He straightened back up and sighed. "My condolences. Sophia no longer shows any sign of life. Judging from the state of her body, she most likely died sometime between 10:00 pm last night and 2:00 am this morning.""That's impossible!" As if grasping at straws, Owen shook his head frantically. "We came to her room at 11:00 pm last night. She was perfectly fine then! She can't be dead. How could she be dead..."Dr. Fleming remained unfazed. "This is just my preliminary guess. Besides, did you actually see h

Andrew remained frozen at the door, unable to speak."Who's at the door?" Owen walked over and nudged him to the side.Dr. Fleming studied them both before explaining his purpose again. This time, he handed over the critical condition notice."I personally examined Sophia and diagnosed her. We ran a lot of tests, so there's no mistake. You may find this difficult to accept, but... I'm sorry. She agreed to donate her corneas, so that's why I'm here today. May I come in now?"Owen was completely stunned. Despite holding the critical condition notice in his hands, he couldn't seem to make sense of the words. It was only two sheets of paper, but they felt impossibly heavy in his hands, which were trembling hard.Andrew stepped aside to let the doctor in.Just then, Mom emerged from the kitchen carrying a plate of pasta. She looked curiously at the unfamiliar young man, then glanced at Andrew and Owen standing by the door."If we have a guest over, why aren't you two inviting him pr

"Stop pretending and get up!" Andrew snapped with a frown, but his voice betrayed a tremor he didn't even realize was there. He grabbed my wrist and tried to pull me up, but my body was completely rigid. The moment he lifted me, I immediately slipped back down. My arms fell limply to my side.Andrew had read a few medical books. Perhaps that was precisely why he didn't dare touch me again."Why is it taking you so long to get her? Is she throwing another tantrum and refusing to come out of her room?"Owen walked in. When he caught sight of me lying on the floor, he sneered, as if he'd predicted this."Sophia, let me make this clear one more time—if you want us to spend time with you, just say so. Don't resort to these kinds of tricks. These fake acts of yours are only going to exhaust what little patience we have left!"He paused for a few seconds, waiting to see how I'd react, but the figure on the floor remained completely motionless."You still won't drop the act, huh?"Owen

The faint click of the lock struck my heart like a heavy hammer. I had to brace myself against the edge of the bed. I couldn't believe Andrew had actually locked me inside my own room."Andrew, open the door!"Furious and frantic, I summoned every ounce of strength I had and pounded on the door, but Owen's harsh rebuke came from the other side."Quit making a scene, Sophia! We're only doing this for your own good. You've become a compulsive liar! You're going to spend some time alone to reflect on your wrongdoings! "We're taking Ellie out tomorrow to get some fresh air and feel better. We have no time to play these stupid games with you."Their footsteps grew fainter and fainter until they disappeared completely.I slid helplessly to the floor. The pain in my body suddenly intensified. It hit me then that the painkillers weren't working anymore. I bit down hard on my lip and clutched my stomach, trying to endure the agony the way I had so many times before.Nevertheless, the pa
